Moment-preserving Young's inequality for the hard potential Boltzmann gain operator

We prove a new moment-preserving Young's inequality for the gain operator of the Boltzmann equation with hard potentials, including the critical case of hard-spheres. Our approach relies crucially on a novel cancellation mechanism dealing with the pathological case of energy-absorbing collisions (that is, collisions that accumulate energy to only one of the outgoing particles). This difficulty is specific to hard potentials, and is not present for Maxwell molecules. Our method quantifies the heuristic that, while energy-absorbing collisions occur with non-trivial probability, they are statistically rare, and therefore do not affect the overall averaging behavior of the gain operator. At the technical level, our proof relies solely on tools from kinetic theory, such as geometric identities and angular averaging.

Global existence of strong solutions to the Inhomogeneous Kinetic Wave Equation

In this paper we construct global dispersive solutions to the space inhomogeneous kinetic wave equation (KWE) which propagate $L^1_{xv}$ moments and conserve mass, momentum and energy. We prove that they scatter, and that the wave operators mapping the initial data to the scattering states are 1-1, onto and continuous in a suitable topology. This is the first global existence result for strong solutions for KWE. This contrasts with prior global existence results for mild solutions, which satisfy a transported version of the equation but do not solve the equation itself. Our proof is carried out entirely in physical space and combines dispersive estimates for the free transport with new trilinear bounds for the gain and loss operators of the KWE on weighted Lebesgue spaces. The main difficulty is the fast growth of the hard-sphere kernel. Our fundamental tool to handle it is a novel collisional averaging estimate. We also show that the nonlinear evolution preserves positivity forward in time. For this, we use the Kaniel-Shinbrot iteration scheme \cite{KS}, properly initialized to ensure successive approximations are dispersive.

On the optimal local well-posedness of the wave kinetic equation in $L^r$

In this paper, we give a unified treatment of the local well-posedness for the wave kinetic equation in almost critical weighted $L^r$ spaces with $2 \leq r \leq \infty.$ The proof builds on ideas from our earlier works \cite{AmLe24, AmLemain25}. Our approach is based solely on kinetic tools, with no appeal to Fourier theory.

On the ill-posedness of kinetic wave equations

In this article we identify a sharp ill-posedness/well-posedness threshold for kinetic wave equations (KWE) derived from quasilinear Schrödinger models. We show well-posedness using a collisional averaging estimate proved in our earlier work \cite{AmLe}. Ill-posedness manifests as instantaneous loss of smoothness for well-chosen initial data. We also prove that both the gain-only and full equation share the same well-posedness threhold, thus legitimizing a gain-only approach to solving 4-wave kinetic equations.

Derivation of the Higher Order Boltzmann Equation for Hard Spheres

In this paper we complete the program initiated by the first and second authors and rigorously derive a Boltzmann-type equation that incorporates higher order collisions among gas particles. More precisely, starting from a finite $N$-particle system where the particles can perform symmetric hard sphere type interactions up to arbitrarily high order $M$, we derive a kinetic equation which consists of a linear combination of higher order collisional terms. We identify the new scaling regime that facilitates such collisions and systematically generalize geometric techniques allowing us to analyze the correlation of potentially distinct order recollisions as time evolves.

Inhomogeneous wave kinetic equation and its hierarchy in polynomially weighted $L^\infty$ spaces

Inspired by ideas stemming from the analysis of the Boltzmann equation, in this paper we expand well-posedness theory of the spatially inhomogeneous 4-wave kinetic equation, and also analyze an infinite hierarchy of PDE associated with this nonlinear equation. More precisely, we show global in time well-posedness of the spatially inhomogeneous 4-wave kinetic equation for polynomially decaying initial data. For the associated infinite hierarchy, we construct global in time solutions using the solutions of the wave kinetic equation and the Hewitt-Savage theorem. Uniqueness of these solutions is proved by using a combinatorial board game argument tailored to this context, which allows us to control the factorial growth of the Dyson series.

Derivation of the kinetic wave equation for quadratic dispersive problems in the inhomogeneous setting

We examine the validity of the kinetic description of wave turbulence for a model quadratic equation. We focus on the space-inhomogeneous case, which had not been treated earlier; the space-homogeneous case is a simple variant. We determine nonlinearities for which the kinetic description holds, or might fail, up to an arbitrarily small polynomial loss of the kinetic time scale. More precisely, we focus on the convergence of the Dyson series, which is an expansion of the solution in terms of the random data.

On the global in time existence and uniqueness of solutions to the Boltzmann hierarchy

In this paper we establish the global in time existence and uniqueness of solutions to the Boltzmann hierarchy, a hierarchy of equations instrumental for the rigorous derivation of the Boltzmann equation from many particles. Inspired by available $L^{\infty}$-based a-priori estimate for solutions to the Boltzmann equation, we develop the polynomially weighted $L^\infty$ a-priori bounds for solutions to the Boltzmann hierarchy and handle the factorial growth of the number of terms in the Dyson's series by reorganizing the sum through a combinatorial technique known as the Klainerman-Machedon board game argument. This paper is the first work that exploits such a combinatorial technique in conjunction with an $L^{\infty}$-based estimate to prove uniqueness of the mild solutions to the Boltzmann hierarchy. Our proof of existence of global in time mild solutions to the Boltzmann hierarchy for admissible initial data is constructive and it employs known global in time solutions to the Boltzmann equation via a Hewitt-Savage type theorem.

Global well-posedness and stability of the inhomogeneous kinetic wave equation near vacuum

In this paper, we prove global in time existence, uniqueness and stability of mild solutions near vacuum for the 4-wave inhomogeneous kinetic wave equation, for Laplacian dispersion relation in dimension $d=2,3$. We also show that for non-negative initial data, the solution remains non-negative. This is achieved by connecting the inhomogeneous kinetic wave equation to the cubic part of a quantum Boltzmann-type equation with moderately hard potential and no collisional averaging.

Moment estimates and well-posedness of the binary-ternary Boltzmann equation

In this paper, we show generation and propagation of polynomial and exponential moments, as well as global well-posedness of the homogeneous binary-ternary Boltzmann equation. We also show that the co-existence of binary and ternary collisions yields better generation properties and time decay, than when only binary or ternary collisions are considered. To address these questions, we develop for the first time angular averaging estimates for ternary interactions. This is the first paper which discusses this type of questions for the binary-ternary Boltzmann equation and opens the door for studying moments properties of gases with higher collisional density.

Rigorous derivation of a ternary Boltzmann equation for a classical system of particles

In this paper, we present a rigorous derivation of a new kinetic equation describing the limiting behavior of a classical system of particles with three particle elastic instantaneous interactions, which are modeled using a non-symmetric version of a ternary distance. The ternary collisional operator we derive can be seen as the first step towards obtaining a toy model for a non-ideal gas where higher order interactions are taken into account.

Global well-posedness of a binary-ternary Boltzmann equation

In this paper we show global well-posedness near vacuum for the binary-ternary Boltzmann equation. The binary-ternary Boltzmann equation provides a correction term to the classical Boltzmann equation, taking into account both binary and ternary interactions of particles, and may serve as a more accurate description model for denser gases in non-equilibrium. Well-posedness of the classical Boltzmann equation and, independently, the purely ternary Boltzmann equation follow as special cases. To prove global well-posedness, we use a Kaniel-Shinbrot iteration and related work to approximate the solution of the nonlinear equation by monotone sequences of supersolutions and subsolutions. This analysis required establishing new convolution type estimates to control the contribution of the ternary collisional operator to the model. We show that the ternary operator allows consideration of softer potentials than the one binary operator, consequently our solution to the ternary correction of the Boltzmann equation preserves all the properties of the binary interactions solution. These results are novel for collisional operators of monoatomic gases with either hard or soft potentials that model both binary and ternary interactions.

A Rigorous Derivation of a Boltzmann System for a Mixture of Hard-Sphere Gases

In this paper, we rigorously derive a Boltzmann equation for mixtures from the many body dynamics of two types of hard sphere gases. We prove that the microscopic dynamics of two gases with different masses and diameters is well defined, and introduce the concept of a two parameter BBGKY hierarchy to handle the non-symmetric interaction of these gases. As a corollary of the derivation, we prove Boltzmann's propagation of chaos assumption for the case of a mixtures of gases.

Rigorous derivation of a binary-ternary Boltzmann equation for a dense gas of hard spheres

This paper provides the first rigorous derivation of a binary-ternary Boltzmann equation describing the kinetic properties of a dense hard-spheres gas, where particles undergo either binary or ternary instantaneous interactions, while preserving momentum and energy. An important challenge we overcome in deriving this equation is related to providing a mathematical framework that allows us to detect both binary and ternary interactions. Furthermore, this paper introduces new algebraic and geometric techniques in order to eventually decouple binary and ternary interactions and understand the way they could succeed one another in time.

On the non-embedding of $\ell_1$ in the James Tree Space

James Tree Space ($\mathcal{JT}$), introduced by R. James, is the first Banach space constructed having non-separable conjugate and not containing $\ell^1$. James actually proved that every infinite dimensional subspace of $\mathcal{JT}$ contains a Hilbert space, which implies the $\ell^1$ non-embedding. In this expository article, we present a direct proof of the $\ell^1$ non-embedding, using Rosenthal's $\ell^1$- Theorem and some measure theoretic arguments, namely Riesz's Representation Theorem.
