Blowups of Dirac structures

Given a real, twisted Dirac structure $L$ on a smooth manifold $M$, and a closed embedded submanifold $N\subseteq M$ of codimension $>1$, we characterise when $L$ lifts to a smooth, twisted Dirac structure on the real projective blowup of $M$ along $N$. This holds precisely when $N$ is either a submanifold transverse to $L$ (with no further restrictions) or a submanifold invariant for $L$, for which the Lie algebras transverse to $N$ have all of the same constant height $k\geq 0$. We also classify Lie algebras satisfying this Lie-theoretic property. We recover a theorem of Polishchuk, which establishes that a Poisson structure lifts to a Poisson structure on the blowup of a submanifold exactly when the submanifold is invariant and the transverse Lie algebras have constant height $k=0$.

Poisson geometry around Poisson submanifolds

We construct a first order local model for Poisson manifolds around a large class of Poisson submanifolds and we give conditions under which this model is a local normal form. The resulting linearization theorem includes as special cases all the known linearization theorems for fixed points and symplectic leaves. The symplectic groupoid version of these results gives a solution to the groupoid coisotropic embedding problem.

Multiplicative Ehresmann connections

We develop the theory of multiplicative Ehresmann connections for Lie groupoid submersions covering the identity, as well as their infinitesimal counterparts. We construct obstructions to the existence of such connections, and we prove existence for several interesting classes of Lie groupoids and Lie algebroids, including all proper Lie groupoids. We show that many notions from the theory of principal bundle connections have analogues in this general setup, including connections 1-forms, curvature 2-forms, Bianchi identity, etc. In [17] we provide a non-trivial application of the results obtained here to construct local models in Poisson geometry and to obtain linearization results around Poisson submanifolds.

Normal forms for principal Poisson Hamiltonian spaces

We prove a normal form theorem for principal Hamiltonian actions on Poisson manifolds around the zero locus of the moment map. The local model is the generalization to Poisson geometry of the classical minimal coupling construction from symplectic geometry of Sternberg and Weinstein. Further, we show that the result implies that the quotient Poisson manifold is linearizable, and we show how to extend the normal form to other values of the moment map.

The Poisson linearization problem for $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{C})$. Part I: Poisson cohomology

This is the first of two papers, in which we prove a version of Conn's linearization theorem for the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{C})\simeq \mathfrak{so}(3,1)$. Namely, we show that any Poisson structure whose linear approximation at a zero is isomorphic to the Poisson structure associated to $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{C})$ is linearizable. In this first part, we calculate the Poisson cohomology associated to $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{C})$, and we construct bounded homotopy operators for the Poisson complex of multivector fields that are flat at the origin. In the second part, we will obtain the linearization result, which works for a more general class of Lie algebras. For the proof, we will develop a Nash-Moser method for functions that are flat at a point.

The Poisson linearization problem for $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{C})$. Part II: The Nash-Moser method

This is the second of two papers, in which we prove a version of Conn's linearization theorem for the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{C})\simeq \mathfrak{so}(3,1)$. Namely, we show that any Poisson structure whose linear approximation at a zero is isomorphic to the Poisson structure associated to $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{C})$ is linearizable. In the first part, we calculated the Poisson cohomology associated to $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{C})$, and we constructed bounded homotopy operators for the Poisson complex of multivector fields that are flat at the origin. In this second part, we obtain the linearization result, which works for a more general class of Lie algebras. For the proof, we develop a Nash-Moser method for functions that are flat at a point.

Poisson structures with compact support

We explicitly construct several Poisson structures with compact support. For example, we show that any Poisson structure on $\R^n$ with polynomial coefficients of degree at most two can be modified outside an open ball, such that it becomes compactly supported. We also show that a symplectic manifold with either contact or cosymplectic boundary admits a Poisson structure which vanishes to infinite order at the boundary and agrees with the original symplectic structure outside an arbitrarily small tubular neighbourhood of the boundary. As a consequence, we prove that any even-dimensional manifold admits a Poisson structure which is symplectic outside a codimension one subset.

Local formulas for multiplicative forms

We provide explicit formulas for integrating multiplicative forms on local Lie groupoids in terms of infinitesimal data. Combined with our previous work [8], which constructs the local Lie groupoid of a Lie algebroid, these formulas produce concrete integrations of several geometric stuctures defined infinitesimally. In particular, we obtain local integrations and non-degenerate realizations of Poisson, Nijenhuis-Poisson, Dirac, and Jacobi structures by local symplectic, symplectic-Nijenhuis, presymplectic, and contact groupoids, respectively.

On local integration of Lie brackets

We give a direct, explicit and self-contained construction of a local Lie groupoid integrating a given Lie algebroid which only depends on the choice of a spray vector field lifting the underlying anchor map. This construction leads to a complete account of local Lie theory and, in particular, to a finite-dimensional proof of the fact that the category of germs of local Lie groupoids is equivalent to that of Lie algebroids.

On dual pairs in Dirac Geometry

In this note we discuss dual pairs in Dirac geometry. We show that this notion appears naturally when studying the problem of pushing forward a Dirac structure along a surjective submersion, and we prove a Dirac-theoretic version of Libermann's theorem from Poisson geometry. Our main result is an explicit construction of strong self-dual pairs for Dirac structures. This theorem not only recovers the global construction of symplectic realizations from [Crainic-Marcut 2011], but allows for a more conceptual understanding of it, yielding a simpler and more natural proof. As an application of the main theorem, we present a different approach to the recent normal form theorem around Dirac transversals from [Bursztyn-Lima-Meinrenken 2016].

The homology class of a Poisson transversal

This note is devoted to the study of the homology class of a compact Poisson transversal in a Poisson manifold. For specific classes of Poisson structures, such as unimodular Poisson structures and Poisson manifolds with closed leaves, we prove that all their compact Poisson transversals represent non-trivial homology classes, generalizing the symplectic case. We discuss several examples in which this property does not hold, as well as a weaker version of this property, which holds for log-symplectic structures. Finally, we extend our results to Dirac geometry.

The Normal Form Theorem around Poisson Transversals

We prove a normal form theorem for Poisson structures around Poisson transversals (also called cosymplectic submanifolds), which simultaneously generalizes Weinstein's symplectic neighborhood theorem from symplectic geometry and Weinstein's splitting theorem. Our approach turns out to be essentially canonical, and as a byproduct, we obtain an equivariant version of the latter theorem.

Normal forms for Poisson maps and symplectic groupoids around Poisson transversals

Poisson transversals are those submanifolds in a Poisson manifold which intersect all symplectic leaves transversally and symplectically. In a previous note we proved a normal form theorem around such submanifolds. In this communication, we promote that result to a normal form theorem for Poisson maps around Poisson transversals. A Poisson map pulls a Poisson transversal back to a Poisson transversal, and our first main result states that simultaneous normal forms exist around such transversals, for which the Poisson map becomes transversally linear, and intertwines the normal form data of the transversals. Our second main result concerns symplectic integrations. We prove that a neighborhood of a Poisson transversal is integrable exactly when the Poisson transversal itself is integrable, and in that case we prove a normal form theorem for the symplectic groupoid around its restriction to the Poisson transversal, which puts all its structure maps in normal form. We conclude the paper by illustrating our results with examples arising from Lie algebras.

Rigidity around Poisson Submanifolds

We prove a rigidity theorem in Poisson geometry around compact Poisson submanifolds, using the Nash-Moser fast convergence method. In the case of one-point submanifolds (fixed points), this immediately implies a stronger version of Conn's linearization theorem, also proving that Conn's theorem is, indeed, just a manifestation of a rigidity phenomenon; similarly, in the case of arbitrary symplectic leaves, it gives a stronger version of the local normal form theorem; another interesting case corresponds to spheres inside duals of compact semisimple Lie algebras, our result can be used to fully compute the resulting Poisson moduli space.

Deformations of the Lie-Poisson sphere of a compact semisimple Lie algebra

A compact semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ induces a Poisson structure $π$ on the unit sphere $S$ in $\mathfrak{g}^*$. We compute the moduli space of Poisson structures on $S$ around $π$. This is the first explicit computation of a Poisson moduli space in dimension greater or equal than three around a degenerate (i.e. not symplectic) Poisson structure.
