Korovkin type theorems for operators acting on functions of polynomial and exponential growth on $[0,\infty)$

We prove two Korovkin-type approximation theorems for sequences of positive linear operators acting on continuous functions on $[0,\infty)$. Under the assumption of pointwise convergence on suitable test functions, we establish pointwise convergence for all functions with polynomial or exponential growth. As direct applications, we obtain convergence results for the classical Baskakov and Szász--Mirakjan operators. The proposed method offers an elementary framework that can be applied to a broad class of positive linear operators.

Asymptotic properties for a general class of Szasz-Mirakjan-Durrmeyer operators

In this paper we introduce a general family of Szász--Mirakjan--Durrmeyer type operators depending on an integer parameter $j \in \mathbb{Z}$. They can be viewed as a generalization of the Szász--Mirakjan--Durrmeyer operators [9], Phillips operators [11] and corresponding Kantorovich modifications of higher order. For $j\in {\mathbb{N}}$, these operators possess the exceptional property to preserve constants and the monomial $x^{j}$. It turns out, that an extension of this family covers certain well-known operators studied before, so that the outcoming results could be unified. We present the complete asymptotic expansion for the sequence of these operators. All its coefficients are given in a concise form. In order to prove the expansions for the class of locally integrable functions of exponential growth on the positive half-axis, we derive a localization result which is interesting in itself.

Poisson approximation to the binomial distribution: extensions to the convergence of positive operators

The idea behind Poisson approximation to the binomial distribution was used in [J. de la Cal, F. Luquin, J. Approx. Theory, 68(3), 1992, 322-329] and subsequent papers in order to establish the convergence of suitable sequences of positive linear operators. The proofs in these papers are given using probabilistic methods. We use similar methods, but in analytic terms. In this way we recover some known results and establish several new ones. In particular, we enlarge the list of the limit operators and give characterizations of them.

Aldaz-Kounchev-Render operators and their approximation properties

The approximation properties of the Aldaz-Kounchev-Render (AKR) operators are discussed and classes of functions for which these operators approximate better than the classical Bernstein operators are described. The new results are then extended to the bivariate case on the square $[0,1]^2$ and compared with other existing results known in literature. Several numerical examples, illustrating the relevance and supporting the theoretical findings, are presented

Elementary hypergeometric functions, Heun functions, and moments of MKZ operators

We consider some hypergeometric functions and prove that they are elementary functions. Consequently, the second order moments of Meyer-Konig and Zeller type operators are elementary functions. The higher order moments of these operators are expressed in terms of elementary functions and polylogarithms. Other applications are concerned with the expansion of certain Heun functions in series or finite sums of elementary hypergeometric functions.

Inequalities for indices of coincidence and entropies

We consider a probability distribution depending on a real parameter $x$. As functions of $x$, the Rényi entropy and the Tsallis entropy can be expressed in terms of the associated index of coincidence $S(x)$. We establish recurrence relations and inequalities for $S(x),$ which can be used in order to get information concerning the two entropies.

Estimates for the differences of positive linear operators and their derivatives

The present paper deals with the estimate of the differences of certain positive linear operators and their derivatives. Our approach involves operators defined on bounded intervals, as Bernstein operators, Kantorovich operators, genuine Bernstein-Durrmeyer operators, Durrmeyer operators with Jacobi weights. The estimates in quantitative form are given in terms of first modulus of continuity. In order to analyze the theoretical results in the last section we consider some numerical examples.

Bounds for some entropies and special functions

We consider a family of probability distributions depending on a real parameter and including the binomial, Poisson and negative binomial distributions. The corresponding index of coincidence satisfies a Heun differential equation and is a logarithmically convex function. Combining these facts we get bounds for the index of coincidence, and consequently for Rényi and Tsallis entropies of order $2$.

Heun functions related to entropies

We consider the indices of coincidence for the binomial, Poisson, and negative binomial distributions. They are related in a simple manner to the Rényi entropy and Tsallis entropy. We investigate some families of Heun functions containing these indices of coincidence. For the involved Heun functions we obtain closed forms, explicit expressions, or representations in terms of hypergeometric functions.

Heun functions and combinatorial identities

We give closed forms for several families of Heun functions related to classical entropies. By comparing two expressions of the same Heun function, we get several combinatorial identities generalizing some classical ones.

Complete monotonicity of some entropies

It is well-known that the Shannon entropies of some parameterized probability distributions are concave functions with respect to the parameter. In this paper we consider a family of such distributions (including the binomial, Poisson, and negative binomial distributions) and investigate the Shannon, Rényi, and Tsallis entropies of them with respect to the complete monotonicity.

A generalization of Kantorovich operators for convex compact subsets

In this paper we introduce and study a new sequence of positive linear operators acting on function spaces defined on a convex compact subset. Their construction depends on a given Markov operator, a positive real number and a sequence of probability Borel measures. By considering special cases of these parameters for particular convex compact subsets we obtain the classical Kantorovich operators defined in the one-dimensional and multidimensional setting together with several of their wide-ranging generalizations scattered in the literature. We investigate the approximation properties of these operators by also providing several estimates of the rate of convergence. Finally, the preservation of Lipschitz-continuity as well as of convexity are discussed

Concavity of some entropies

It is well-known that the Shannon entropies of some parameterized probability distributions are concave functions with respect to the parameter. In this paper we consider a family of such distributions (including the binomial, Poisson, and negative binomial distributions) and investigate the concavity of the Shannon, Rényi, and Tsallis entropies of them.
