Modular resurgent structures for vectors

Building on prior results [1], we introduce vector-valued modular resurgent series, whose components exhibit a single infinite tower of singularities in the Borel plane, trivial secondary resurgent series, and Stokes constants given by linear combinations of the coefficients of a vector of $L$-functions. We extend the paradigm of modular resurgence to this setting, emphasizing the role of the Stokes constants and the interplay between the associated vectors of $q$-series and Dirichlet series, and describing the resulting symmetry relating canonical pairs of vector-valued modular resurgent series. Moreover, we conjecture that certain vectors of $q$-series with modular resurgent asymptotics are vector-valued quantum modular forms and can be reconstructed via median resummation. Finally, we show that vectors of $q$-Pochhammer symbols, previously considered in [2], and Eichler integrals of vector-valued modular forms of weight $1/2$ and $3/2$ can be studied within the framework of vector-valued modular resurgence. While the first case amounts to a convenient repackaging of scalar modular resurgence, the second involves a non-trivial representation of the modular group and therefore illustrates the necessity of the vector-valued framework; we establish its modular resurgent structure in general, and work it out in full detail for the unary theta series, whose Eichler integrals are the false theta functions of quantum topology.

Chiralization of Quiver Varieties

Given a quiver Q with gauge dimension $\bf v$ and framing dimension $\bf w$, one can define the extended quiver variety $\widetilde{\mathcal M}(\mathbf v,\mathbf w)$, which is a smooth family of deformations of the Nakajima quiver variety $\mathcal M(\mathbf v,\mathbf w)$. In this paper we discuss two vertex algebras which chiralize the geometry $\widetilde{\mathcal M}(\mathbf v,\mathbf w)$. We construct a sheaf of $\hbar$-adic vertex superalgebras $\mathscr D^{\mathrm{ch}}_{\widetilde{\mathcal M}(\mathbf v,\mathbf w),\hbar}$ on $\widetilde{\mathcal M}(\mathbf v,\mathbf w)$ which quantizes the jet bundle of $\widetilde{\mathcal M}(\mathbf v,\mathbf w)$, and define a vertex algebra $\mathsf D^{\mathrm{ch}}(\widetilde{\mathcal M}(\mathbf v,\mathbf w))$ to be the $\hbar=1$ specialization of the $\mathbb C^{\times}$-finite part of the vector space of global sections $Γ(\widetilde{\mathcal M}(\mathbf v,\mathbf w), \mathscr D^{\mathrm{ch}}_{\widetilde{\mathcal M}(\mathbf v,\mathbf w),\hbar})$. We define another vertex superalgebra $\mathcal V(\mathbf v,\mathbf w)$ by BRST reduction of the tensor product of the $βγbc$-system and Heisenberg VOA associated to the quiver Q, and show that there exists a natural vertex superalgebra map from $\mathcal V(\mathbf v,\mathbf w)$ to $\mathsf D^{\mathrm{ch}}(\widetilde{\mathcal M}(\mathbf v,\mathbf w))$. Under certain technical assumptions, we prove that the negative degree BRST cohomologies of the tensor product of $βγbc$-systems and Heisenberg VOA associated to the quiver Q are zero, and under stronger assumptions, that the aforementioned vertex superalgebra map is injective. Physically, the vertex superalgebra $\mathcal V(\mathbf v,\mathbf w)$ is closely related to the boundary VOA of the H-twisted 3D $\mathcal N=4$ quiver gauge theory associated to the quiver Q with gauge and framing dimension vectors $\bf v$ and $\bf w$.

3d Modularity Revisited

The three-manifold topological invariants $\hat Z$ capture the half-index of the three-dimensional theory with ${\mathcal{N}}=2$ supersymmetry obtained by compactifying the M5 brane theory on the closed three-manifold. In 2019, surprising general relations between the $\hat Z$-invariants, quantum modular forms, and vertex algebras have been proposed. In the meanwhile, an extensive array of examples have been studied, but several important general structural questions remain. First, for many three-manifolds we have seen hints of concrete $\widetilde {\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ representations underlying the different $\hat Z$-invariants of the given manifolds. At the same time, these invariants appear to only span a subspace of the representation, and the role of the latter remains mysterious. We elucidate the meaning of the modular group representation, realized as vector-valued quantum modular forms, by first proposing the analogue $\hat Z$-invariants with supersymmetric defects, and subsequently showing that the full vector-valued quantum modular form for $\widetilde {\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ is precisely the object capturing all the $\hat Z$-invariants of a given three-manifold, when the newly defined defects $\hat Z$-invariants are included. Second, it was expected that matching radial limits is a key feature of $\hat Z$-invariants when changing the orientation of the plumbed three-manifold, suggesting the relevance of mock modularity. We substantiate the conjecture by providing explicit proposals for such $\hat Z$-invariants for three three-manifolds and verify their mock modularity and limits. Third, we initiate the study of the vertex algebra structure of the mock type invariants by showcasing a systematic way to construct cone vertex operator algebras associated to these mock invariants, which can be viewed as the partner of logarithmic vertex operator algebras in this context.

Keeping matter in the loop in dS$_3$ quantum gravity

We propose a mechanism that couples matter fields to three-dimensional de Sitter quantum gravity. Our construction is based on the Chern-Simons formulation of three-dimensional Euclidean gravity, and it centers on a collection of Wilson loops winding around Euclidean de Sitter space. We coin this object a Wilson spool. To construct the spool, we build novel representations of $\mathfrak{su}(2)$. To evaluate the spool, we adapt and exploit several known exact results in Chern-Simons theory. Our proposal correctly reproduces the one-loop determinant of a free massive scalar field on $S^3$ as $G_N\to 0$. Moreover, allowing for quantum metric fluctuations, it can be systematically evaluated to any order in perturbation theory.

Quantum Modular $\widehat Z{}^G$-Invariants

We study the quantum modular properties of $\widehat Z{}^G$-invariants of closed three-manifolds. Higher depth quantum modular forms are expected to play a central role for general three-manifolds and gauge groups $G$. In particular, we conjecture that for plumbed three-manifolds whose plumbing graphs have $n$ junction nodes with definite signature and for rank $r$ gauge group $G$, that $\widehat Z{}^G$ is related to a quantum modular form of depth $nr$. We prove this for $G={\rm SU}(3)$ and for an infinite class of three-manifolds (weakly negative Seifert with three exceptional fibers). We also investigate the relation between the quantum modularity of $\widehat Z{}^G$-invariants of the same three-manifold with different gauge group $G$. We conjecture a recursive relation among the iterated Eichler integrals relevant for $\widehat Z{}^G$ with $G={\rm SU}(2)$ and ${\rm SU}(3)$, for negative Seifert manifolds with three exceptional fibers. This is reminiscent of the recursive structure among mock modular forms playing the role of Vafa-Witten invariants for ${\rm SU}(N)$. We prove the conjecture when the three-manifold is moreover an integral homological sphere.

From quantum curves to topological string partition functions II

We propose a geometric characterisation of the topological string partition functions associated to the local Calabi-Yau (CY) manifolds used in the geometric engineering of $d=4$, $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric field theories of class $\mathcal{S}$. A quantisation of these CY manifolds defines differential operators called quantum curves. The partition functions are extracted from the isomonodromic tau-functions associated to the quantum curves by expansions of generalised theta series type. It turns out that the partition functions are in one-to-one correspondence with preferred coordinates on the moduli spaces of quantum curves defined using the Exact WKB method. The coordinates defined in this way jump across certain loci in the moduli space. The changes of normalisation of the tau-functions associated to these jumps define a natural line bundle playing a key role in the geometric characterisation of the topological string partition functions proposed here.

Affine $\mathcal{W}$-algebras and Miura maps from 3d $\mathcal N=4$ non-Abelian quiver gauge theories

We study Vertex Operator Algebras (VOAs) obtained from the H-twist of 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ linear quiver gauge theories. We find that H-twisted VOAs can be regarded as the ''chiralization'' of the extended Higgs branch: many of the ingredients of the Higgs branch are naturally ''uplifted'' into the VOAs, while conversely the Higgs branch can be recovered as the associated variety of the VOA. We also discuss the connection of our VOA with affine $\mathcal{W}$-algebras. For example, we construct an explicit homomorphism from an affine $\mathcal{W}$-algebra $\mathcal{W}^{-n+1}(\mathfrak{gl}_n,f_{\mathrm{min}})$ into the H-twisted VOA for $T^{[2,1^{n-2}]}_{[1^n]}[\mathrm{SU}(n)]$ theories. Motivated by the relation with affine $\mathcal{W}$-algebras, we introduce a reduction procedure for the quiver diagram, and use this to give an algorithm to systematically construct novel free-field realizations for VOAs associated with general linear quivers.

Coupling Fields to 3D Quantum Gravity via Chern-Simons Theory

We propose a mechanism that couples matter fields to three-dimensional quantum gravity, which can be used for theories with a positive or negative cosmological constant. Our proposal is rooted in the Chern-Simons formulation of three-dimensional gravity and makes use of the Wilson spool, a collection of Wilson loops winding around closed paths of the background. We show that the Wilson spool correctly reproduces the one-loop determinant of a free massive scalar field on rotating black holes in AdS$_3$ and Euclidean dS$_3$ as $G_N\to 0$. Moreover, we describe how to incorporate quantum metric fluctuations into this formalism.

From quantum curves to topological string partition functions

This paper describes the reconstruction of the topological string partition function for certain local Calabi-Yau (CY) manifolds from the quantum curve, an ordinary differential equation obtained by quantising their defining equations. Quantum curves are characterised as solutions to a Riemann-Hilbert problem. The isomonodromic tau-functions associated to these Riemann-Hilbert problems admit a family of natural normalisations labelled by the chambers in the extended Kähler moduli space of the local CY under consideration. The corresponding isomonodromic tau-functions admit a series expansion of generalised theta series type from which one can extract the topological string partition functions for each chamber.

Trinion Conformal Blocks from Topological strings

In this paper we investigate the relation between conformal blocks of Liouville CFT and the topological string partition functions of the rank one trinion theory $T_2$. The partition functions exhibit jumps when passing from one chamber in the parameter space to another. Such jumps can be attributed to a change of the integration contour in the free field representation of Liouville conformal blocks. We compare the partition functions of the $T_2$ theories representing trifundamental half hypermultiplets in $N=2$, $d=4$ field theories to the partition functions associated to bifundamental hypermultiplets. We find that both are related to the same Liouville conformal blocks up to inessential factors. In order to establish this picture we combine and compare results obtained using topological vertex techniques, matrix models and topological recursion. We furthermore check that the partition functions obtained by gluing two $T_2$ vertices can be represented in terms of a four point Liouville conformal block. Our results indicate that the $T_2$ vertex offers a useful starting point for developing an analog of the instanton calculus for SUSY gauge theories with trifundamental hypermultiplets.

Toda conformal blocks, quantum groups, and flat connections

This paper investigates the relations between the Toda conformal field theories, quantum group theory and the quantisation of moduli spaces of flat connections. We use the free field representation of the $\mathcal{W}$-algebras to define natural bases for spaces of conformal blocks of the Toda conformal field theory associated to the Lie algebra ${\mathfrak s}{\mathfrak l}_3$ on the three-punctured sphere with representations of generic type associated to the three punctures. The operator-valued monodromies of degenerate fields can be used to describe the quantisation of the moduli spaces of flat $\mathrm{SL}(3)$-connections. It is shown that the matrix elements of the monodromies can be expressed as Laurent polynomials of more elementary operators which have a simple definition in the free field representation. These operators are identified as quantised counterparts of natural higher rank analogs of the Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates from Teichmüller theory. Possible applications to the study of the non-Lagrangian SUSY field theories are briefly outlined.

Line operators in theories of class $\mathcal{S}$, quantized moduli space of flat connections, and Toda field theory

Non-perturbative aspects of $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories of class $\mathcal{S}$ are deeply encoded in the algebra of functions on the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_\text{flat}$ of flat $SL(N)$-connections on Riemann surfaces. Expectation values of Wilson and 't Hooft line operators are related to holonomies of flat connections, and expectation values of line operators in the low-energy effective theory are related to Fock-Goncharov coordinates on $\mathcal{M}_\text{flat}$. Via the decomposition of UV line operators into IR line operators, we determine their noncommutative algebra from the quantization of Fock-Goncharov Laurent polynomials, and find that it coincides with the skein algebra studied in the context of Chern-Simons theory. Another realization of the skein algebra is generated by Verlinde network operators in Toda field theory. Comparing the spectra of these two realizations provides non-trivial support for their equivalence. Our results can be viewed as evidence for the generalization of the AGT correspondence to higher-rank class $\mathcal{S}$ theories.
