Non-supersymmetric non-tachyonic heterotic vacua with reduced rank in various dimensions

We construct rigid non-supersymmetric heterotic vacua with reduced rank and no tachyons in six and four dimensions. These configurations are based on asymmetric orbifold compactifications which do not admit deformation moduli and represent, to the best of our knowledge, the first instances of non-tachyonic non-supersymmetric heterotic vacua with reduced rank.

Free Fermionic Constructions of Heterotic Strings

This chapter is an introduction to the Free Fermionic Formulation of String Theory, with emphasis on heterotic model building. After a brief review of bosonization in two dimensional conformal field theories, we discuss how internal bosonic string coordinates can be consistently replaced by free fermionic degrees of freedom. In this framework, worldsheet supersymmetry may be realized entirely among free fermions. Embedding this construction into string theory leads to a number of constraints arising from modular invariance at one and higher genera. The solution of these constraints takes the form of a small number of model building rules from which the string spectrum and interactions may be analyzed. We review some of the most well-studied models in the literature and their classification, with emphasis on the symmetric basis. The explicit map of free fermionic models to the orbifold construction is presented in some detail.

A Lightning Introduction to String Theory

We give a lightning introduction to critical string theory, including the 26-dimensional bosonic string, the 10-dimensional superstrings and heterotic strings with and without spacetime supersymmetry. We also discuss open strings and D-branes, as well as the orientifold constructions, in ten dimensions.

From Free-Fermionic Constructions to Orbifolds and Back

We systematically develop the explicit map between string vacua constructed in the Free Fermionic Formulation and their $\mathbb{Z}_2^N$ toroidal orbifold counterparts. We illustrate the map in various example classes of models, including cases relevant for string phenomenology, as well as in theories where space-time supersymmetry is broken by the stringy Scherk-Schwarz mechanism.

Tachyons and Misaligned Supersymmetry in Closed String Vacua

In a remarkable paper, Dienes discovered that the absence of physical tachyons in closed string theory is intimately related to oscillations in the net number of bosonic minus fermionic degrees of freedom, a pattern predicted by an underlying misaligned supersymmetry. The average of these oscillations was linked to an exponential growth controlled by an effective central charge C_{eff} smaller than the expected inverse Hagedorn temperature. Dienes also conjectured that C_{eff} should vanish when tachyons are absent. In this paper, we revisit this problem and show that boson-fermion oscillations are realised even when tachyons are present in the physical spectrum. In fact, we prove that the average growth rate C_{eff} is set by the mass of the lightest state, be it massless or tachyonic, and coincides with the effective inverse Hagedorn temperature of the associated thermal theory. We also provide a general proof that the necessary and sufficient condition for classical stability is the vanishing of the sector averaged sum which implies C_{eff}=0, in agreement with Dienes' conjecture.

Three-Generation Super No-Scale Models in Heterotic Superstrings

We derive the conditions for the one-loop contribution to the cosmological constant to be exponentially suppressed in a class of heterotic string compactifications with three generations of chiral matter, where supersymmetry is spontaneously broken à la Scherk-Schwarz. Using techniques of partial unfolding based on the Hecke congruence subgroup $Γ_0(2)$ of the modular group to extract the leading asymptotics, we show that the super no-scale condition $n_B=n_F$ between the degeneracies of massless bosons $n_B$ and fermions $n_F$ in the full string spectrum is necessary but not sufficient, and needs to be supplemented by additional conditions which we identify. We use these results to construct three-generation Pati-Salam models with interesting phenomenological characteristics.

Refined Topological Amplitudes from the $Ω$-Background in String Theory

It was recently shown that the $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 string topological amplitudes in the heterotic weak coupling limit generate a six-dimensional Melvin space, providing a description of the $Ω$-background in string theory, where string propagation can be exactly studied. In this work, we generalise the analysis to the refined case of the $Ω$-background with two independent deformation parameters. The Melvin space is now ten-dimensional and is extended by an action on the internal K3 compactification manifold of the heterotic superstring, corresponding to an ${\rm SU(2)}_R$ rotation in the field theory description. We identify the class of heterotic topological amplitudes realising this background as the scattering of two anti-self-dual gravitons and arbitrary numbers of anti-self-dual graviphotons, self-dual vector fields of the dilaton multiplet, together with self-dual magnetic fluxes along the K3. In the field theory limit, our result correctly reproduces the perturbative part of the Nekrasov free energy in the case where both equivariant parameters are turned on.

Super No-Scale Models with Pati-Salam Gauge Group

We construct and classify heterotic models where $\mathcal N=1$ supersymmetry is spontaneously broken à la Scherk-Schwarz. The theories contain chiral matter transforming under an observable Pati-Salam gauge symmetry and are classified according to a minimal set of phenomenological requirements, including the shape of their one-loop effective potential. The latter is essentially controlled by two parameters that are easily computable in terms of the defining string data. By imposing Bose-Fermi degeneracy at the massless level, known as the super no-scale condition, it is possible to suppress the value of the effective potential to exponentially small values, provided the compactification scale is sufficiently lower than the string scale. Furthermore, we compare the space of $\sim 10^{10}$ Pati-Salam models with their parent theories based on SO(10) gauge symmetry and confirm the universality structure of their effective one-loop potentials.

GUT Scale Unification in Heterotic Strings

We present a class of heterotic compactifications where it is possible to lower the string unification scale down to the GUT scale, while preserving the validity of the perturbative analysis. We illustrate this approach with an explicit example of a four-dimensional chiral heterotic vacuum with N=1 supersymmetry.

2d orbifolds with exotic supersymmetry

We analyse various two dimensional theories arising from compactification of type II and heterotic string theory on asymmetric orbifolds. We find extra supersymmetry generators arising from twisted sectors, giving rise to exotic supersymmetry algebras. Among others we discover new cases with a large number of supercharges, such as $\mathcal{N}=(20,8)$, $\mathcal{N}=(24,8)$, $\mathcal{N}=(32,0)$, $\mathcal{N}=(24,24)$ and $\mathcal{N}=(48,0)$.

A Solution to the Decompactification Problem in Chiral Heterotic Strings

We present a solution to the decompactification problem of gauge thresholds in chiral heterotic string theories with two large extra dimensions, where supersymmetry is spontaneously broken by the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism. Whenever the Kaluza-Klein scale is much lower than the string scale, the infinite towers of heavy states contribute non-trivially to the renormalisation of gauge couplings, which typically grow linearly with the large volume of the internal space and invalidate perturbation theory. We trace the origin of the decompactification problem to properties of the six dimensional theory obtained in the infinite volume limit and show that thresholds may instead exhibit logarithmic volume dependence and we provide the conditions for this to occur. We illustrate this mechanism with explicit string constructions where the decompactification problem does not occur.

Gravitational Threshold Corrections in Non-Supersymmetric Heterotic Strings

We compute one-loop quantum corrections to gravitational couplings in the effective action of four-dimensional heterotic strings where supersymmetry is spontaneously broken by Scherk-Schwarz fluxes. We show that in both heterotic and type II theories of this class, no moduli dependent corrections to the Planck mass are generated. We explicitly compute the one-loop corrections to the $\mathcal R^2$ coupling and find that, despite the absence of supersymmetry, its contributions may still be organised into representations of subgroups of the modular group, and admit a universal form, determined uniquely by the multiplicities of the ground states of the theory. Moreover, similarly to the case of gauge couplings, also the gravitational sector may become strongly coupled in models which dynamically induce large volume for the extra dimensions.

Chiral Heterotic Strings with Positive Cosmological Constant

We present explicit examples of semi-realistic heterotic models with spontaneously broken supersymmetry, which dynamically lead to breaking scales much smaller than $M_{\rm Planck}$ and exponentially small positive values for the cosmological constant. Contrary to field theoretic intuition, we find that the global structure of the effective potential is significantly affected by contributions of massive and non-level matched string states and we investigate the conditions that dynamically ensure a number of desired properties.

One-Loop BPS amplitudes as BPS-state sums

Recently, we introduced a new procedure for computing a class of one-loop BPS-saturated amplitudes in String Theory, which expresses them as a sum of one-loop contributions of all perturbative BPS states in a manifestly T-duality invariant fashion. In this paper, we extend this procedure to all BPS-saturated amplitudes of the form \int_F Γ_{d+k,d} Φ, with Φ being a weak (almost) holomorphic modular form of weight -k/2. We use the fact that any such Φ can be expressed as a linear combination of certain absolutely convergent Poincaré series, against which the fundamental domain F can be unfolded. The resulting BPS-state sum neatly exhibits the singularities of the amplitude at points of gauge symmetry enhancement, in a chamber-independent fashion. We illustrate our method with concrete examples of interest in heterotic string compactifications.

On the Rankin-Selberg method for higher genus string amplitudes

Closed string amplitudes at genus $h\leq 3$ are given by integrals of Siegel modular functions on a fundamental domain of the Siegel upper half-plane. When the integrand is of rapid decay near the cusps, the integral can be computed by the Rankin-Selberg method, which consists of inserting an Eisenstein series $E_h(s)$ in the integrand, computing the integral by the orbit method, and finally extracting the residue at a suitable value of $s$. String amplitudes, however, typically involve integrands with polynomial or even exponential growth at the cusps, and a renormalization scheme is required to treat infrared divergences. Generalizing Zagier's extension of the Rankin-Selberg method at genus one, we develop the Rankin-Selberg method for Siegel modular functions of degree 2 and 3 with polynomial growth near the cusps. In particular, we show that the renormalized modular integral of the Siegel-Narain partition function of an even self-dual lattice of signature $(d,d)$ is proportional to a residue of the Langlands-Eisenstein series attached to the $h$-th antisymmetric tensor representation of the T-duality group $O(d,d,Z)$.

$\mathcal{N}=2^\star$ from Topological Amplitudes in String Theory

In this paper, we explicitly construct string theory backgrounds that realise the so-called $\mathcal N=2^\star$ gauge theory. We prove the consistency of our models by calculating their partition function and obtaining the correct gauge theory spectrum. We further provide arguments in favour of the universality of our construction which covers a wide class of models all of which engineer the same gauge theory. We reproduce the corresponding Nekrasov partition function once the $Ω$-deformation is included and the appropriate field theory limit taken. This is achieved by calculating the topological amplitudes $F_g$ in the string models. In addition to heterotic and type II constructions, we also realise the mass deformation in type I theory, thus leading to a natural way of uplifting the result to the instanton sector.

Generalised universality of gauge thresholds in heterotic vacua with and without supersymmetry

We study one-loop quantum corrections to gauge couplings in heterotic vacua with spontaneous supersymmetry breaking. Although in non-supersymmetric constructions these corrections are not protected and are typically model dependent, we show how a universal behaviour of threshold differences, typical of supersymmetric vacua, may still persist. We formulate specific conditions on the way supersymmetry should be broken for this to occur. Our analysis implies a generalised notion of threshold universality even in the case of unbroken supersymmetry, whenever extra charged massless states appear at enhancement points in the bulk of moduli space. Several examples with universality, including non-supersymmetric chiral models in four dimensions, are presented.

Probing the Moduli Dependence of Refined Topological Amplitudes

With the aim of providing a worldsheet description of the refined topological string, we continue the study of a particular class of higher derivative couplings $F_{g,n}$ in the type II string effective action compactified on a Calabi-Yau threefold. We analyse first order differential equations in the anti-holomorphic moduli of the theory, which relate the $F_{g,n}$ to other component couplings. From the point of view of the topological theory, these equations describe the contribution of non-physical states to twisted correlation functions and encode an obstruction for interpreting the $F_{g,n}$ as the free energy of the refined topological string theory. We investigate possibilities of lifting this obstruction by formulating conditions on the moduli dependence under which the differential equations simplify and take the form of generalised holomorphic anomaly equations. We further test this approach against explicit calculations in the dual heterotic theory.
