Neel Skyrmion interactions derived by their arrangement in regular lattices

The coarse-grained interactions between Néel skyrmions, stabilized by interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya coupling (iDMI), are studied through the properties of their hexagonal lattices by micromagnetic simulations. The interactions with the film edges are excluded by imposing periodic boundary conditions. The dependence of skyrmion size and interaction energy on the distance is derived. Two types of behavior are observed depending on the value of iDMI compared to the critical value Dc above which the skyrmion size diverges: For iDMI < Dc the skyrmions acquire a finite size that saturates at maximum value independent of the skyrmion distance that corresponds to the one of the isolated skyrmion. This energy is above that of the homogeneous ferromagnetic state. For iDMI > Dc the skyrmions tend to increase in size to the extent that their neighboring skyrmions permit and finite size skyrmions can be stabilized only in arrays due to their mutual repulsion. These configurations have energy below that of the homogeneous ferromagnetic state.

RISCORE: Enhancing In-Context Riddle Solving in Language Models through Context-Reconstructed Example Augmentation

Riddle-solving requires advanced reasoning skills, pushing LLMs to engage in abstract thinking and creative problem-solving, often revealing limitations in their cognitive abilities. In this paper, we examine the riddle-solving capabilities of LLMs using a multiple-choice format, exploring how different prompting techniques impact performance on riddles that demand diverse reasoning skills. To enhance results, we introduce RISCORE (RIddle Solving with COntext REcontruciton) a novel fully automated prompting method that generates and utilizes contextually reconstructed sentence-based puzzles in conjunction with the original examples to create few-shot exemplars. Our experiments demonstrate that RISCORE significantly improves the performance of language models in both vertical and lateral thinking tasks, surpassing traditional exemplar selection strategies across a variety of few-shot settings.

AILS-NTUA at SemEval-2024 Task 9: Cracking Brain Teasers: Transformer Models for Lateral Thinking Puzzles

In this paper, we outline our submission for the SemEval-2024 Task 9 competition: 'BRAINTEASER: A Novel Task Defying Common Sense'. We engage in both sub-tasks: Sub-task A-Sentence Puzzle and Sub-task B-Word Puzzle. We evaluate a plethora of pre-trained transformer-based language models of different sizes through fine-tuning. Subsequently, we undertake an analysis of their scores and responses to aid future researchers in understanding and utilizing these models effectively. Our top-performing approaches secured competitive positions on the competition leaderboard across both sub-tasks. In the evaluation phase, our best submission attained an average accuracy score of 81.7% in the Sentence Puzzle, and 85.4% in the Word Puzzle, significantly outperforming the best neural baseline (ChatGPT) by more than 20% and 30% respectively.

Micromagnetic Simulations Study of Skyrmions in Magnetic FePt Nanoelements

The magnetization reversal in 330 nm triangular prismatic magnetic nanoelements with variable magnetocrystalline anisotropy similar to that of partially chemically ordered FePt is studied using micromagnetic simulations employing Finite Element discretizations. Several magnetic properties including the evaluation of the magnetic skyrmion number $S$ are computed in order to characterize magnetic configurations exhibiting vortex-like formations. Magnetic vortices and skyrmions are revealed in different systems generated by the variation of the magnitude and relative orientation of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy direction, with respect to the normal to the triangular prism base. Micromagnetic configurations with skyrmion number greater than one have been detected for the case where magnetocrystalline anisotropy was normal to nanoelement's base. For particular magnetocrystalline anisotropy values three distinct skyrmions are formed and persist for a range of external fields. The simulation-based calculations of the skyrmion number S revealed that skyrmions can be created for magnetic nanoparticle systems lacking of chiral interactions such as Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya, but by only varying the magnetocrystalline anisotropy.

Optimization of the magnetic properties of aligned Co nanowires/polymer composites for the fabrication of permanent magnets

We aim at combining high coercivity magnetic nanowires in a polymer matrix in a view to fabricate rare--earth free bonded magnets. In particular, our aim is to fabricate anisotropic materials by aligning the wires in the polymer matrix. We have explored the different parameters of the fabrication process in order to produce a material with the best possible magnetic properties. We show that the choice of a proper solvent allows obtaining stable nanowire suspensions. The length and the type of the polymer chains play also an important role. Smaller chains ($M_w < 10000$) provide better magnetization results. The magnetic field applied during the casting of the material plays also a role and should be of the order of a fraction of a tesla. The local order of the nanowires in the matrix has been characterized by TEM and Small Angle Neutron Scattering. The correlation between the local order of the wires and the magnetic properties is discussed. Materials with coercivity $μ_0 H_c$ up to 0.70 $T$ at room temperature have been obtained.

Nanostructured Melt-Spun Sm(Co,Fe,Zr,B)7:5 Alloys for High-Temperature Magnets

High coercivity, the highest for Cu-free 2 : 17 Sm-Co ribbons, has been obtained in as-spun (= 211 kOe) and short time annealed (= 232 kOe) samples of Sm(CobalFe Zr B)7 5 alloys, with varying B, Zr, and Fe content (= 0-0 06, = 0-0 16, = 0 08-0 3) and wheel speed. In as-spun samples, the TbCu7 type structure and in annealed samples the Th2Zn17 and CaCu5 type structures is observed, plus fcc Co as minority phase is observed. Reduced remanence () is higher than 0.7. High-temperature magnetic measurements show very good stability above 300 C with coercive field as high as 5.2 kOe at 330 C. For annealed Sm(CobalFe0 3Zr0 02B0 04)7 5, very good loop squareness and high maximum energy product of 10.7 MGOe have been obtained. Increasing Zr content results in less uniform microstructure of annealed ribbons.
