Eclipsing Kitaev: off-diagonal exchange governs the correlated high-field phases of $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$

We report a high-field thermodynamic study of the hyperhoneycomb Kitaev material $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$, using magnetotropic susceptibility to resolve its low-temperature field-angle phase diagram across the principal crystallographic planes in magnetic fields up to $60$ T. Rather than evolving directly from the low-field incommensurate state into a polarized regime, the system exhibits a strongly direction-dependent sequence of correlated phases. Most notably, for fields in the $ac$-plane, we identify an additional high-field phase that is absent in the other principal planes and exists only within a restricted region of field-angle space. This phase structure is naturally explained by the competition between magnetic field and bond-directional exchange interactions. Using a symmetry-based description supported by microscopic calculations within the $J$-$K$-$Γ$ model, we show that off-diagonal $Γ$ exchange couples the ferromagnetic and staggered magnetic orders and thereby stabilizes the observed correlated high-field phases. The measured angular dependence of the critical fields is quantitatively captured by this theory, identifying $Γ$ exchange as the key interaction controlling the high-field response. These results clarify why the promise of a field-induced spin liquid -- the notion that suppressing magnetic order might reveal the underlying Kitaev physics -- remains unfulfilled in candidate materials: even when the Kitaev interaction is large, off-diagonal exchange stabilizes symmetry-constrained correlated phases that instead preempt the polarized state.

One-dimensional physics of the frustrated quantum magnet PHCC

We report a comprehensive microscopic study of the frustrated quantum magnet PHCC, (C$_4$H$_{12}$N$_2$)Cu$_2$Cl$_6$, using density-functional band-structure calculations combined with numerical quantum many-body simulations of the underlying spin Hamiltonian. We show that the magnetism of PHCC is captured by a one-dimensional model of the frustrated spin chain with alternating nearest-neighbor couplings ($J_1=23.1$ K, $J_1'=7.0$ K) and uniform next-nearest-neighbor couplings ($J_2=13.9$ K). This model, which can also be thought of as a zigzag ladder, provides a quantitative description of the magnetic susceptibility and the magnetization process, and accounts for the observed dispersion of the single-triplet band and its merging into a continuum near the Brillouin zone center. We also make predictions for the existence of sharp bound (anti-bound) states of two triplets, below (above) the bottom (upper) edge of the two-particle scattering continuum.

Complex orders and chirality in the classical Kitaev-$Γ$ model

It is well-recognized that the low-energy physics of many Kitaev materials is governed by two dominant energy scales, the Ising-like Kitaev coupling $K$ and the symmetric off-diagonal $Γ$ coupling. An understanding of the interplay between these two scales is therefore the natural starting point toward a quantitative description that includes sub-dominant perturbations that are inevitably present in real materials. The present study focuses on the classical $K$-$Γ$ model on the honeycomb lattice, with a specific emphasis on the region $K<0$ and $Γ>0$, which is the most relevant for the available materials and which remains enigmatic in both quantum and classical limits, despite much effort. We employ large-scale Monte Carlo simulations on specially designed finite-size clusters and unravel the presence of a complex multi-sublattice magnetic orders in a wide region of the phase diagram, whose structure is characterized in detail. We show that this order can be quantified in terms of a coarse-grained scalar-chirality order, featuring a counter-rotating modulation on the two spin sublattices. We also provide a comparison to previous studies and discuss the impact of quantum fluctuations on the phase diagram.

Spin-$S\,$ Kitaev-Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice: A high-order treatment via the many-body coupled cluster method

We study the spin-$S$ Kitaev-Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice for $S\!=\!1/2$, $1$ and $3/2$, by using the coupled cluster method (CCM) of microscopic quantum many-body theory. This system is one of the earliest extensions of the Kitaev model and is believed to contain two extended spin liquid phases for any value of the spin quantum number $S$. We show that the CCM delivers accurate estimates for the phase boundaries of these spin liquid phases, as well as other transition points in the phase diagram. Moreover, we find evidence of two unexpected narrow phases for $S\!=\!1/2$, one sandwiched between the zigzag and ferromagnetic phases and the other between the Néel and the stripy phases. The results establish the CCM as a versatile numerical technique that can capture the strong quantum-mechanical fluctuations that are inherently present in generalized Kitaev models with competing bond-dependent anisotropies.

Geometric frustration and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in a quantum star lattice hybrid copper sulfate

We study the magnetism of a layered, spin-$\frac12$ organic-inorganic copper sulfate, which is a close realization of the star lattice antiferromagnet, one of the playgrounds of geometric frustration and resonating valence bond physics in two spatial dimensions. Our thermodynamic measurements show no ordering down to 0.1 K and a characteristic field-induced entropic shift, revealing the presence of an infinite number of competing states down to very low energy scales. The response to external magnetic fields shows, in addition, a peculiar anisotropy, reflected in the formation of a 1/3 magnetization plateau (stable up to full saturation around 105 T) and a paramagnetic, Curie-like susceptibility for one direction of the field (${\bf H}\parallel{\bf c}$), and a completely different response in other field directions. Our first-principles density functional theory calculations and exact diagonalizations show that these experimental puzzles are distinctive signatures of a strong interplay between geometric frustration and sizable Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, and the emergence of a continuous U(1) symmetry at low energy scales.

Beyond Kitaev physics in strong spin-orbit coupled magnets

We review the recent advances and current challenges in the field of strong spin-orbit coupled Kitaev materials, with a particular emphasis on the physics beyond the exactly-solvable Kitaev spin liquid point. To that end, we give a comprehensive overview of the most relevant exchange interactions in $d^5$ and $d^7$ iridates and similar compounds, an exposition of their microscopic origin, and a systematic attempt to map out the most interesting correlated regimes of the multi-dimensional parameter space, guided by powerful symmetry and duality transformations as well as by insights from wide-ranging analytical and numerical studies. We also survey recent exciting results on quasi-1D models and discuss their relevance to higher-dimensional models. Finally, we highlight some of the key questions in the field as well as future directions.

Frustration relief and reorientation transition in the kagome-like dolerophanite Cu$_2$OSO$_4$

We present a theoretical study of dolerophanite Cu$_2$OSO$_4$, a layered kagome-like spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ magnetic insulator that can be described either as a system of chains coupled through dimers or as a kagome lattice where every third spin is replaced by a ferromagnetic spin dimer. Building on insights from ab initio calculations, classical numerical minimizations, and semiclassical expansions, we arrive at a minimal microscopic description that accounts for the experimental data reported so far, including the nature of the magnetic order, the reported spin length, and the observed anisotropy. The latter arises by a peculiar competition between the antisymmetric (Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya) and the symmetric part of the exchange anisotropy, which gives rise to a two-step re-orientation process involving two successive continuous phase transitions. Our work uncovers mechanisms stabilizing canted ferrimagnetic order in kagome systems, and highlights strong magnetic anisotropy in the presence if dissimilar magnetic orbitals on crystallographically nonequivalent Cu sites. We also show how these anisotropy terms affect the spin-wave spectrum and how they can be tracked experimentally.

Multi-$Q$ magnetic phases from frustration and chiral interactions

We investigate the effect of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions in the planar pyrochlore (checkerboard) antiferromagnet, one of the paradigmatic models of spin frustration, and establish the classical phase diagram using a combination of analytical and numerical approaches. While anisotropic interactions generally tend to remove the frustration, here we show that a high degree of frustration survives in a large region of the phase diagram. In conjunction with the fixed handedness introduced by the DM anisotropy, this spawns a cascade of incommensurate and double-twisted multi-domain phases, consisting of spatially intertwined domains of the underlying competing phases of the isotropic frustrated point. The results underpin a novel mechanism of generating multi-Q phases in systems that combine high degree of frustration and chiral interactions.

Magnetic Excitations and Interactions in the Kitaev Hyperhoneycomb Iridate $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$

We present a thorough experimental study of the three-dimensional hyperhoneycomb Kitaev magnet $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$, using a combination of inelastic neutron scattering (INS), time-domain THz spectroscopy, and heat capacity measurements. The main results include a massive low-temperature reorganization of the INS spectral weight that evolves into a broad peak centered around 12 meV, and a distinctive peak in the THz data at 2.8(1) meV. A detailed comparison to powder-averaged spin-wave theory calculations reveals that the positions of these two features are controlled by the anisotropic $Γ$ coupling and the Heisenberg exchange $J$, respectively. The refined microscopic spin model places $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ in close proximity to the Kitaev spin liquid phase.

Signatures of non-Loudon-Fleury Raman scattering in the Kitaev magnet $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$

We investigate the magnetic excitations of the hyperhoneycomb Kitaev magnet $β$-$\text{Li}_2\text{IrO}_3$ by means of inelastic Raman scattering. The spectra exhibits a coexistence of a broad scattering continuum and two sharp low-energy peaks at 2.5 meV and 3 meV, with a distinctive polarization dependence. While the continuum is suggestive of fractional quasi-particles emerging from a proximate quantum spin liquid phase, the sharp peaks provide the first experimental signature of the `non-Loudon-Fleury' one-magnon scattering processes proposed recently [Phys. Rev. B 104, 144412 (2021)]. The corresponding microscopic mechanism is similar to the one leading to the symmetric off-diagonal exchange interaction $Γ$ (as it involves a combination of both direct and ligand-mediated exchange paths), but is otherwise completely unexpected within the traditional Loudon-Fleury theory of Raman scattering. The present experimental verification therefore calls for a drastic reevaluation of Raman scattering in similar systems with strong spin orbit coupling and multiple exchange paths.

Non-Loudon-Fleury Raman scattering in spin-orbit coupled Mott insulators

We revisit the theory of magnetic Raman scattering in Mott insulators with strong spin-orbit coupling, with a major focus on Kitaev materials. We show that Kitaev materials with bond-anisotropic interactions are generally expected to show both one- and two-magnon responses. It is further shown that, in order to obtain the correct leading contributions to the Raman vertex operator $\mc{R}$, one must take into account the precise, photon-assisted microscopic hopping processes of the electrons and that, in systems with multiple hopping paths, $\mc{R}$ contains terms beyond those appearing in the traditional Loudon-Fleury theory. Most saliently, a numerical implementation of the revised formalism to the case of the three-dimensional hyperhoneycomb Kitaev material $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ reveals that the non-Loudon-Fleury scattering terms actually dominate the Raman intensity. In addition, they induce a qualitative modification of the polarization dependence, including, e.g., the emergence of a sharp one-magnon peak at low energies which is not expected in the traditional Loudon-Fleury theory. This peak is shown to arise from microscopic photon-assisted tunneling processes that are of similar type with the ones leading to the symmetric off-diagonal interaction $Γ$ (known to be present in many Kitaev materials), but take the form of a bond-directional magnetic dipole term in the Raman vertex. These results are expected to apply across all Kitaev materials and mark a drastic change of paradigm for the understanding of Raman scattering in materials with strong spin-orbit coupling and multiple exchange paths.

Magnon-spinon dichotomy in the Kitaev hyperhoneycomb $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$

The family of edge-sharing tri-coordinated iridates and ruthenates has emerged in recent years as a major platform for Kitaev spin liquid physics, where spins fractionalize into emergent magnetic fluxes and Majorana fermions with Dirac-like dispersions. While such exotic states are usually pre-empted by long-range magnetic order at low temperatures, signatures of Majorana fermions with long coherent times have been predicted to manifest at intermediate and higher energy scales, similar to the observation of spinons in quasi-1D spin chains. Here we present a Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering study of the magnetic excitations of the hyperhoneycomb iridate $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ under a magnetic field with a record-high-resolution spectrometer. At low-temperatures, dispersing spin waves can be resolved around the predicted intertwined incommensurate spiral and field-induced zigzag orders, whose excitation energy reaches a maximum of 16meV. A 2T magnetic field softens the dispersion around ${\bf Q}=0$. The behavior of the spin waves under magnetic field is consistent with our semiclassical calculations for the ground state and the dynamical spin structure factor, which further predicts that the ensued intertwined uniform states remain robust up to very high fields (100 T). Most saliently, the low-energy magnon-like mode is superimposed by a broad continuum of excitations, centered around 35meV and extending up to 100meV. This high-energy continuum survives up to at least 300K -- well above the ordering temperature of 38K -- and gives evidence for pairs of long-lived Majorana fermions of the proximate Kitaev spin liquid.

Quantum-classical crossover in the spin-1/2 Heisenberg-Kitaev kagome magnet

The spin-1/2 Heisenberg kagome antiferromagnet is one of the paradigmatic playgrounds for frustrated quantum magnetism, with an extensive number of competing resonating valence bond (RVB) states emerging at low energies, including gapped and gapless spin liquids and valence bond crystals. Here we revisit the crossover from this quantum RVB phase to a semiclassical regime brought about by anisotropic Kitaev interactions, and focus on the precise mechanisms underpinning this crossover. To this end, we introduce a simple parametrization of the classical ground states (GSs) in terms of emergent Ising-like variables, and use this parametrizaton: i) to construct an effective low-energy description of the order-by-disorder mechanism operating in a large part of the phase diagram, and ii) to contrast, side by side, exact diagonalization data obtained from the full basis with that obtained from the restricted (orthonormalized) basis of classical GSs. The results reveal that fluctuation corrections from states outside the restricted basis are strongly quenched inside the semiclassical regime (due to the large anisotropy spin gaps), and that the RVB phase survives up to a relatively large value of Kitaev anisotropy $K$. We further find that the pure Kitaev model admits a subextensive number of one-dimensional symmetries, which explains naturally the absence of classical and quantum order by disorder reported previously.

Reentrant incommensurate order and anomalous magnetic torque in the Kitaev magnet $β$-$\text{Li}_2\text{IrO}_3$

We present a theoretical study of the response of $β$-$\text{Li}_2\text{IrO}_3$ under external magnetic fields in the $ab$, $bc$ and $ac$ crystallographic planes. The results are based on the minimal nearest-neighbor $J$-$K$-$Γ$ model and reveal a rich intertwining of field-induced phases and magnetic phase transitions with distinctive signatures that can be probed directly via torque magnetometry. Most saliently, we observe: i) an unusual reentrance of the incommensurate counter-rotating order for fields in the $ab$-plane, and ii) a set of abrupt torque discontinuities which are particularly large for fields rotating in the $bc$ plane, and whose characteristic shape resembles closely the ones observed in the 3D Kitaev magnet $γ$-$\text{Li}_2\text{IrO}_3$. An experimental confirmation of these predictions will pave the way for an accurate determination of all relevant microscopic parameters of this 3D Kitaev magnet.

Unconventional magnetic field response of the hyperhoneycomb Kitaev magnet $β-\textbf{Li}_2\textbf{IrO}_3$

We present a unified description of the response of the hyperhoneycomb Kitaev magnet $β$-$\text{Li}_2\text{IrO}_3$ to applied magnetic fields along the orthorhombic directions ${\bf a}$, ${\bf b}$ and ${\bf c}$. This description is based on the minimal nearest-neighbor $J$-$K$-$Γ$ model and builds on the idea that the incommensurate counter-rotating order observed experimentally at zero field can be treated as a long-distance twisting of a nearby commensurate order with six spin sublattices. The results reveal that the behavior of the system for ${\bf H}\parallel{\bf a}$, ${\bf H}\parallel{\bf b}$ and ${\bf H}\parallel{\bf c}$ share a number of qualitative features, including: i) a strong intertwining of the modulated, counter-rotating order with a set of uniform orders; ii) the disappearance of the modulated order at a critical field $H^\ast$, whose value is strongly anisotropic with $H_{\bf b}^\ast\!<\!H_{\bf c}^\ast\!\ll\!H_{\bf a}^\ast$; iii) the presence of a robust zigzag phase above $H^\ast$; and iv) the fulfillment of the Bragg peak intensity sum rule. It is noteworthy that the disappearance of the modulated order for ${\bf H}\parallel{\bf c}$ proceeds via a `metamagnetic' first-order transition which does not restore all broken symmetries. This implies the existence of a second finite-$T$ phase transition at higher magnetic fields. We also demonstrate that quantum fluctuations give rise to a significant reduction of the local moments for all directions of the field. The results for the total magnetization for ${\bf H}\parallel{\bf b}$ are consistent with available data and confirm a previous assertion that the system is very close to the highly-frustrated $K$-$Γ$ line in parameter space. Our predictions for the magnetic response for fields along ${\bf a}$ and ${\bf c}$ await experimental verification.

Collective spin dynamics of Z2 vortex crystals in triangular Kitaev-Heisenberg antiferromagnets

We show that the mesoscopic incommensurate $\mathbb{Z}_2$ vortex crystals proposed for layered triangular anisotropic magnets can be most saliently identified by two distinctive signatures in dynamical spin response experiments: The presence of pseudo-Goldstone `phonon' modes at low frequencies $ω$, associated with the collective vibrations of the vortex cores, and a characteristic multi-scattered intensity profile at higher $ω$, arising from a large number of Bragg reflections and magnon bandgaps. These are direct fingerprints of the large vortex sizes and magnetic unit cells and the solitonic spin profile around the vortex cores.

Magnetic structure and excitation spectrum of the hyperhoneycomb Kitaev magnet $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$

We present a theoretical study of the static and dynamical properties of the Kitaev magnet $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ based on the minimal $J$-$K$-$Γ$ model. We argue that the incommensurate magnetic order of $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ can be qualitatively understood in terms of a long-wavelength twisting of a nearby commensurate, period-3 state, that shares the same symmetry, propagation vector, counter-rotation of the two spin sublattices, and non-coplanarity. This period-3 state shows very different structure when either the Kitaev interaction $K$ or the off-diagonal exchange anisotropy $Γ$ is dominant, featuring in particular ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic spin dimers, respectively. We compute the magnon excitation spectra and the dynamical spin structure factor for both structures. The results for the momentum and energy dependence of the neutron-scattering intensity provide distinctive qualitative and quantitative fingerprints of the $K$-dominant or $Γ$-dominant states and thus gives additional information on the relative strength of these interactions in $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$.

Magnetic field-induced evolution of intertwined orders in the Kitaev magnet $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$

Recent scattering experiments in the 3D Kitaev magnet $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ have shown that a relatively weak magnetic field along the crystallographic ${\bf b}$-axis drives the system from its incommensurate counter-rotating order to a correlated paramagnet, with a significant uniform `zigzag' component superimposing the magnetization along the field. Here it is shown that the zigzag order is not emerging from its linear coupling to the field (via a staggered, off-diagonal element of the ${\bf g}$-tensor), but from its intertwining with the incommensurate order and the longitudinal magnetization. The emerging picture explains all qualitative experimental findings at zero and finite fields, including the rapid decline of the incommensurate order with field and the so-called intensity sum rule. The latter are shown to be independent signatures of the smallness of the Heisenberg exchange $J$, compared to the Kitaev coupling $K$ and the off-diagonal anisotropy $Γ$. Remarkably, in the regime of interest, the field $H^\ast$ at which the incommensurate component vanishes, depends essentially only on $J$, which allows to extract an estimate of $J\!\simeq\!4K$ from reported measurements of $H^\ast$. We also comment on recent experiments in pressurized $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ and conclude that $J$ decreases with pressure.
