A (Running) Bolt for New Reasons

We construct a four-parameter family of smooth, horizonless, stationary solutions of ungauged five-dimensional supergravity by using the four-dimensional Euclidean Schwarzschild metric as a base space and "magnetizing" its bolt. We then generalize this to a five-parameter family based upon the Euclidean Kerr-Taub-Bolt. These "running Bolt" solutions are necessarily non-static. They also have the same charges and mass as a non-extremal black hole with a classically-large horizon area. Moreover, in a certain regime their mass can decrease as their charges increase. The existence of these solutions supports the idea that the singularities of non-extremal black holes are resolved by low-mass modes that correct the singularity of the classical black hole solution on large (horizon-sized) scales.

Supergravity Solutions from Floating Branes

We solve the equations of motion of five-dimensional ungauged supergravity coupled to three U(1) gauge fields using a floating-brane Ansatz in which the electric potentials are directly related to the gravitational warp factors. We find a new class of non-BPS solutions, that can be obtained linearly starting from an Euclidean four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell base. This class - the largest known so far - reduces to the BPS and almost-BPS solutions in certain limits. We solve the equations explicitly when the base space is given by the Israel-Wilson metric, and obtain solutions describing non-BPS D6 and anti-D6 branes kept in equilibrium by flux. We also examine the action of spectral flow on solutions with an Israel-Wilson base and show that it relates these solutions to almost-BPS solutions with a Gibbons-Hawking base.

Multi-Center non-BPS Black Holes - the Solution

We construct multi-center, non-supersymmetric four-dimensional solutions describing a rotating anti-D6-D2 black hole and an arbitrary number of D4-D2-D0 black holes in a line. These solutions correspond to an arbitrary number of extremal non-BPS black rings in a Taub-NUT space with a rotating three-charge black hole in the middle. The positions of the centers are determined by solving a set of "bubble" or "integrability" equations that contain cubic polynomials of the inter-center distance, and that allow scaling solutions even when the total four-dimensional angular momentum of the scaling centers is non-zero.

Non-BPS Black Rings and Black Holes in Taub-NUT

We solve the recently-proposed equations describing non-BPS extremal multi-center configurations, and construct explicit solutions describing non-supersymmetric extremal black rings in Taub-NUT, as well as the seed solution for the most general extremal non-BPS under-rotating black hole in four dimensions. We also find solutions that contain both a black hole and a black ring, which descend to four-dimensional extremal non-BPS two-center black holes with generic charges.

Supertubes in Bubbling Backgrounds: Born-Infeld Meets Supergravity

We discuss two ways in which one can study two-charge supertubes as components of generic three-charge, three-dipole charge supergravity solutions. The first is using the Born-Infeld action of the supertubes, and the second is via the complete supergravity solution. Even though the Born-Infeld description is only a probe approximation, we find that it gives exactly the same essential physics as the complete supergravity solution. Since supertubes can depend on arbitrary functions, our analysis strengthens the evidence for the existence of three-charge black-hole microstate geometries that depend on an infinite set of parameters, and sets the stage for the computation of the entropy of these backgrounds. We examine numerous other aspects of supertubes in three-charge, three-dipole charge supergravity backgrounds, including chronology protection during mergers, the contribution of supertubes to the charges and angular momenta, and the enhancement of their entropy. In particular, we find that entropy enhancement affects supertube fluctuations both along the internal and the spacetime directions, and we prove that the charges that give the enhanced entropy can be much larger than the asymptotic charges of the solution. We also re-examine the embedding of five-dimensional black rings in Taub-NUT, and show that in different coordinate patches a ring can correspond to different four-dimensional black holes. Last, but not least, we show that all the three-charge black hole microstate geometries constructed so far can be embedded in AdS_3 x S^3, and hence can be related to states of the D1-D5 CFT.

Plumbing the Abyss: Black Ring Microstates

We construct the first smooth, horizonless ``microstate geometries'' that have the same charges, dipole charges and angular momenta as a BPS black ring whose horizon is macroscopic. These solutions have exactly the same geometry as black rings, except that the usual infinite throat is smoothly capped off at a very large depth. If the solutions preserve a U(1)x U(1) isometry, then this depth is limited by flux quantization but if this symmetry is broken then the throat can be made arbitrarily deep by tuning classical, geometric moduli. Interpreting these ``abysses'' (smooth microstate geometries of arbitrary depth) from the point of view of the AdS-CFT correspondence suggests two remarkable alternatives: either stringy effects can eliminate very large regions of a smooth low-curvature supergravity solution, or the D1-D5-P CFT has quantum critical points. The existence of solutions whose depth depends on moduli also enables us to define ``entropy elevators,'' and these provide a new tool for studying the entropy of BPS and near-BPS black holes.

Entropy Enhancement and Black Hole Microstates

We study fluctuating two-charge supertubes in three-charge geometries. We show that the entropy of these supertubes is determined by their locally-defined effective charges, which differ from their asymptotic charges by terms proportional to the background magnetic fields. When supertubes are placed in deep, scaling microstate solutions, these effective charges can become very large, leading to a much larger entropy than one naively would expect. Since fluctuating supertubes source smooth geometries in certain duality frames, we propose that such an entropy enhancement mechanism might lead to a black-hole like entropy coming entirely from configurations that are smooth and horizonless in the regime of parameters where the classical black hole exists.

Spectral Flow, and the Spectrum of Multi-Center Solutions

We discuss "spectral flow" coordinate transformations that take asymptotically four-dimensional solutions into other asymptotically four-dimensional solutions. We find that spectral flow can relate smooth three-charge solutions with a multi-center Taub-NUT base to solutions where one or several Taub-NUT centers are replaced by two-charge supertubes, and vice versa. We further show that multi-parameter spectral flows can map such Taub-NUT centers to more singular centers that are either D2-D0 or pure D0-brane sources. Since supertubes can depend on arbitrary functions, we establish that the moduli space of smooth horizonless black hole microstate solutions is classically of infinite dimension. We also use the physics of supertubes to argue that some multi-center solutions that appear to be bound states from a four-dimensional perspective are in fact not bound states when considered from a five- or six-dimensional perspective.

Bubbles on Manifolds with a U(1) Isometry

We investigate the construction of five-dimensional, three-charge supergravity solutions that only have a rotational U(1) isometry. We show that such solutions can be obtained as warped compactifications with a singular ambi-polar hyper-Kahler base space and singular warp factors. We show that the complete solution is regular around the critical surface of the ambi-polar base. We illustrate this by presenting the explicit form of the most general supersymmetric solutions that can be obtained from an Atiyah-Hitchin base space and its ambi-polar generalizations. We make a parallel analysis using an ambi-polar generalization of the Eguchi-Hanson base space metric. We also show how the bubbling procedure applied to the ambi-polar Eguchi-Hanson metric can convert it to a global AdS_2xS^3 compactification.

Black Holes, Black Rings and their Microstates

In this review article we describe some of the recent progress towards the construction and analysis of three-charge configurations in string theory and supergravity. We begin by describing the Born-Infeld construction of three-charge supertubes with two dipole charges, and then discuss the general method of constructing three-charge solutions in five dimensions. We explain in detail the use of these methods to construct black rings, black holes, as well as smooth microstate geometries with black hole and black ring charges, but with no horizon. We present arguments that many of these microstate geometries are dual to boundary states that belong to the same sector of the D1-D5-P CFT as the typical states. We end with an extended discussion of the implications of this work for the physics of black holes in string theory.

Black String Entropy and Fourier-Mukai Transform

We propose a microscopic description of black strings in F-theory based on string duality and Fourier-Mukai transform. These strings admit several different microscopic descriptions involving D-brane as well as M2 or M5-brane configurations on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds. In particular our results can also be interpreted as an asymptotic microstate count for D6-D2-D0 configurations in the limit of large D2-charge on the elliptic fiber. The leading behavior of the microstate degeneracy in this limit is shown to agree with the macroscopic entropy formula derived from the black string supergravity solution.

Mergers and Typical Black Hole Microstates

We use mergers of microstates to obtain the first smooth horizonless microstate solutions corresponding to a BPS three-charge black hole with a classically large horizon area. These microstates have very long throats, that become infinite in the classical limit; nevertheless, their curvature is everywhere small. Having a classically-infinite throat makes these microstates very similar to the typical microstates of this black hole. A rough CFT analysis confirms this intuition, and indicates a possible class of dual CFT microstates. We also analyze the properties and the merging of microstates corresponding to zero-entropy BPS black holes and black rings. We find that these solutions have the same size as the horizon size of their classical counterparts, and we examine the changes of internal structure of these microstates during mergers.

The Foaming Three-Charge Black Hole

We find a very large set of smooth horizonless geometries that have the same charges and angular momenta as the five-dimensional, maximally-spinning, three-charge, BPS black hole (J^2 = Q^3). Our solutions are constructed using a four-dimensional Gibbons-Hawking base space that has a very large number of two-cycles. The entropy of our solutions is proportional to Q^(1/2). In the same class of solutions we also find microstates corresponding to zero-entropy black rings, and these are related to the microstates of the black hole by continuous deformations.

Bubbling Supertubes and Foaming Black Holes

We construct smooth BPS three-charge geometries that resolve the zero-entropy singularity of the U(1) x U(1) invariant black ring. This singularity is resolved by a geometric transition that results in geometries without any branes sources or singularities but with non-trivial topology. These geometries are both ground states of the black ring, and non-trivial microstates of the D1-D5-P system. We also find the form of the geometries that result from the geometric transition of N zero-entropy black rings, and argue that, in general, such geometries give a very large number of smooth bound-state three-charge solutions, parameterized by 6N functions. The generic microstate solution is specified by a four-dimensional hyper-Kahler geometry of a certain signature, and contains a ``foam'' of non-trivial two-spheres. We conjecture that these geometries will account for a significant part of the entropy of the D1-D5-P black hole, and that Mathur's conjecture might reduce to counting certain hyper-Kahler manifolds.

Sliding Rings and Spinning Holes

We construct smooth supergravity solutions describing a BPS black ring with a BPS black hole centered at an arbitrary distance above the ring. We find that as one moves the black hole the entropy of the ring remains constant, but the angular momentum coming from the supergravity fluxes changes. Our solutions also show that in order to merge a BPS black ring with a BPS black hole one has to increase one of the angular momenta of the ring, and that the result of the merger is always a BMPV black hole. We also find a class of mergers that are thermodynamically reversible, and comment on their physics.

R^2 Corrections to Black Ring Entropy

Recently, Guica, Huang, Li, and Strominger considered an R^2 correction to the entropy of a black ring, and found a mismatch between supergravity and the CFT. However, such a comparison should take into account the subtle distinction between the asymptotic charges of the black ring and the charges entering the CFT description. We show that using the correct charges yields perfect agreement.

Microstates of the D1-D5-KK System

We find supergravity solutions corresponding to all U(1) x U(1) invariant chiral primaries of the D1-D5-KK system. These solutions are 1/8 BPS, carry angular momentum, and are asymptotically flat in the 3+1 dimensional sense. They can be thought of as representing the ground states of the four dimensional black hole constructed from the D1-D5-KK-P system. Demanding the absence of unphysical singularities in our solutions determines all free parameters, and gives precise agreement with the quantum numbers expected from the CFT point of view. The physical mechanism behind the smoothness of the solutions is that the D1-branes and D5-branes expand into a KK-monopole supertube in the transverse space of the original KK-monopole.

Black Rings with Varying Charge Density

We find the general five-dimensional, supersymmetric black ring solutions in M-theory based upon a circular ring, but with arbitrary, fluctuating charge distributions around the ring. The solutions have three arbitrary charge distribution functions, but their asymptotic charges and angular momenta only depend upon the total charges on the ring. The arbitrary density fluctuations thus represent "hair." By varying the charge distributions one can continuously change the entropy of these black rings; to our knowledge this is the first solution in which the entropy depends on classical moduli. We also show that there is a family of solutions, with two arbitrary functions, for which the horizon remains rotationally invariant, and yet the complete solution breaks rotational symmetry. If the horizon area is set to zero then one obtains families of supertube solutions. We find that our general solutions are governed by three harmonic functions that may be thought of as classical excitations of a string. The horizon area provides a natural Lorentz metric on these excitations, and the constancy of the rotational invariance of the horizon imposes a set of Virasoro constraints.
