Equivalence between nonlinear dynamical systems and urn processes

An equivalence is shown between a large class of deterministic dynamical systems and a class of stochastic processes, the balanced urn processes. These dynamical systems are governed by quasi-polynomial differential systems that are widely used in mathematical modeling while urn processes are actively studied in combinatorics and probability theory. The presented equivalence extends a theorem by Flajolet et al. (Flajolet, Dumas and Puyhaubert Discr. Math. Theor. Comp. Sc. AG - 2006, DMTCS Proceedings) already establishing an isomorphism between urn processes and a particular class of differential systems with monomial vector fields. The present result is based on the fact that such monomial differential systems are canonical forms for more general dynamical systems.

A nonlinear delayed model for the immune response in the presence of viral mutation

In this paper we consider a delayed nonlinear model of the dynamics of the immune system against a viral infection that contains wild-type virus and one mutant. A finite response time of the immune system was considered in order which leads to sustained oscillatory behavior as well as chaotic behavior, triggered by the presence of delays. We present a thoroughly numeric analysis and some analytical results.

Wave packet dynamics in chains with delayed electronic nonlinear response

We study the dynamics of one electron wave packet in a chain with a non-adiabatic electron-phonon interaction. The electron-phonon coupling is taken into account in the time-dependent Schrödinger equation by a delayed cubic nonlinearity. In the limit of an adiabatic coupling, the self-trapping phenomenon occurs when the nonlinearity parameter exceeds a critical value of the order of the band width. We show that a weaker nonlinearity is required to produce self-trapping in the regime of short delay times. However, this trend is reversed for slow nonlinear responses, resulting in a reentrant phase-diagram. In slowly responding media, self-trapping only takes place for very strong nonlinearities.
