Soft modes in the proton-neutron pairing channel as precursors of deuteron condensate in N=Z nuclei

Relativistic nuclear response theory is formulated for the proton-neutron pairing, or deuteron transfer, channel. The approach is based on the meson-nucleon Lagrangian of Quantum Hadrodynamics (QHD) and advances the relativistic field theory to connect consistently the high-energy scale of heavy mesons, the medium-energy range of the pion and the low-energy domain of emergent collective vibrations (phonons) in a parameter-free way. Mesons and phonons build up the in-medium nucleon-nucleon interaction in spin-isospin transfer channels, in particular, the phonon-exchange part takes care of the leading-order retardation effects. In this framework, we explore $J^π = 0^+$ and $J^π = 1^+$ channels of the nuclear response to the proton-neutron pair removal and addition in $^{56}$Ni and $^{100}$Sn with a special focus on the lowest (soft) modes as precursors of deuteron condensate and candidates for being the mediators of the proton-neutron pairing interaction.

Electric dipole response of neutron-rich Calcium isotopes in relativistic quasiparticle time blocking approximation

New results for electric dipole strength in the chain of even-even Calcium isotopes with the mass numbers A = 40 - 54 are presented. Starting from the covariant Lagrangian of Quantum Hadrodynamics, spectra of collective vibrations (phonons) and phonon-nucleon coupling vertices for $J \leq 6$ and normal parity were computed in a self-consistent relativistic quasiparticle random phase approximation (RQRPA). These vibrations coupled to Bogoliubov two-quasiparticle configurations (2q$\otimes$phonon) form the model space for the calculations of the dipole response function in the relativistic quasiparticle time blocking approximation (RQTBA). The results for giant dipole resonance in the latter approach are compared to those obtained in RQRPA and to available data. Evolution of the dipole strength with neutron number is investigated for both high-frequency giant dipole resonance (GDR) and low-lying strength. Development of a pygmy resonant structure on the low-energy shoulder of GDR is traced and analyzed in terms of transition densities. A dependence of the pygmy dipole strength on the isospin asymmetry parameter is extracted.

Observable effects caused by vacuum pair creation in the field of high-power optical lasers

We consider the possibility of an experimental proof of vacuum e+e- pair creation in the focus of two counter-propagating optical laser beams with an intensity of the order of 10^20 - 10^22 W/cm^2. Our approach is based on the collisionless kinetic equation for the distribution function of the e+e- pairs with the source term for particle production. As a possible experimental signal of vacuum pair production we consider the refraction of a high-frequency probe laser beam by the produced e+e- plasma to be observed by an interference filter. The generation of higher harmonics of the laser frequency in the self-consistent electric field is also investigated.
