Optimal light storage with full pulse shape control

We experimentally demonstrate optimal storage and retrieval of light pulses of arbitrary shape in atomic ensembles. By shaping auxiliary control pulses, we attain efficiencies approaching the fundamental limit and achieve precise retrieval into any predetermined temporal profile. Our techniques, demonstrated in warm Rb vapor, are applicable to a wide range of systems and protocols. As an example, we present their potential application to the creation of optical time-bin qubits and to controlled partial retrieval.

Low-frequency vacuum squeezing via polarization self-rotation in Rb vapor

We observed squeezed vacuum light at 795 nm in 87Rb vapor via resonant polarization self-rotation, and report noise sidebands suppression of ~1 dB below shot noise level spanning from acoustic (30 kHz) to MHz frequencies. This is the first demonstration of sub-MHz quadrature vacuum squeezing in atomic systems. The spectral range of observed squeezing matches well typical bandwidths of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonances, making this simple technique for generation of optical fields with non-classical statistics at atomic transitions wavelengths attractive for EIT-based quantum information protocols applications.

Slow light with integrated gain and large pulse delay

We demonstrate slow and stored light in Rb vapor with a combination of desirable features: minimal loss and distortion of the pulse shape, and large fractional delay (> 10). This behavior is enabled by: (i) a group index that can be controllably varied during light pulse propagation; and (ii) controllable gain integrated into the medium to compensate for pulse loss. Any medium with the above two characteristics should be able to realize similarly high-performance slow light.

Optimal control of light pulse storage and retrieval

We demonstrate experimentally a procedure to obtain the maximum efficiency for the storage and retrieval of light pulses in atomic media. The procedure uses time reversal to obtain optimal input signal pulse-shapes. Experimental results in warm Rb vapor are in good agreement with theoretical predictions and demonstrate a substantial improvement of efficiency. This optimization procedure is applicable to a wide range of systems.

Comparison of 87Rb N-resonances for D1 and D2 transitions

We report an experimental comparison of three-photon-absorption resonances (known as "N-resonances") for the D_1 and D_2 optical transitions of thermal 87Rb vapor. We find that the D_2 N-resonance has better contrast, a broader linewidth, and a more symmetric lineshape than the D_1 N-resonance. Taken together, these factors imply superior performance for frequency standards operating on alkali D_2 N-resonances, in contrast to coherent population trapping (CPT) resonances for which the D_2 transition provides poorer frequency standard performance than the D_1 transition.

Cancellation of light-shifts in an N-resonance clock

We demonstrate that first-order light-shifts can be cancelled for an all-optical, three-photon-absorption resonance ("N-resonance") on the D1 transition of Rb87. This light-shift cancellation enables improved frequency stability for an N-resonance clock. For example, using a table-top apparatus designed for N-resonance spectroscopy, we measured a short-term fractional frequency stability (Allan deviation) 1.5e-11 tau^(-1/2) for observation times 1s< tau < 50s. Further improvements in frequency stability should be possible with an apparatus designed as a dedicated N-resonance clock.

Observation of polarization quantum noise of laser radiation in Rb vapor cell

We present experimental study of polarization quantum noise of laser radiation passed through optically think vapor of Rb87. We observe a step-like noise spectrum. We discuss various factor which may result in such noise spectrum and prevent observation of squeezing of quantum fluctuations predicted in Matsko et al. PRA 63, 043814 (2001).

Diffusion-induced Ramsey narrowing

A novel form of Ramsey narrowing is identified and characterized. For long-lived coherent atomic states coupled by laser fields, the diffusion of atoms in-and-out of the laser beam induces a spectral narrowing of the atomic resonance lineshape. Illustrative experiments and an intuitive analytical model are presented for this diffusion-induced Ramsey narrowing, which occurs commonly in optically-interrogated systems.

A novel absorption resonance for all-optical atomic clocks

We report an experimental study of an all-optical three-photon-absorption resonance (known as a "N-resonance") and discuss its potential application as an alternative to atomic clocks based on coherent population trapping (CPT). We present measurements of the N-resonance contrast, width and light-shift for the D1 line of 87Rb with varying buffer gases, and find good agreement with an analytical model of this novel resonance. The results suggest that N-resonances are promising for atomic clock applications.

Nonlinear magneto-optical effects in Ba vapor

We report the first measurements of linear and nonlinear magneto-optical polarization rotation on an intercombination transition of Ba vapor (lambda= 791.1nm). We observe a maximum polarization rotation angle in Faraday configuration of 15mrad, accompanied by suppression of absorption. A theoretical treatment of the nonlinear Faraday effect in the limit of a strong interacting light field is developed.

New Pedagogy for Using Internet-Based Teaching Tools in Physics Course

Acquiring the mathematical, conceptual, and problem-solving skills required in university-level physics courses is hard work, and the average student often lacks the knowledge and study skills they need to succeed in the introductory courses. Here we propose a new pedagogical model and a straight-forwardly reproducible set of internet-based testing tools. Our work to address some of the most important student deficiencies is based on three fundamental principles: balancing skill level and challenge, providing clear goals and feedback at every stage, and allowing repetition without penalty. Our tools include an Automated Mathematics Evaluation System (AMES), a Computerized Homework Assignment Grading System (CHAGS), and a set of after-homework quizzes and mini-practice exams (QUizzes Intended to Consolidate Knowledge, or QUICK). We describe how these tools are incorporated into the course, and present some preliminary results on their effectiveness.

Buffer-gas induced absorption resonances in Rb vapor

We observe transformation of the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonance into the absorption resonance in a $Λ$ interaction configuration in a cell filled with $^{87}$Rb and a buffer gas. This transformation occurs as a one-photon detuning of the coupling fields is varied from the atomic transition. No such absorption resonance is found in the absence of a buffer gas. The width of the absorption resonance is several times smaller than the width of the EIT resonance, and the changes of absorption near these resonances are about the same. Similar absorption resonances are detected in the Hanle configuration in a buffered cell.

Large negative and positive delay of optical pulses in coherently prepared dense Rb vapor with buffer gas

We experimentally study the group time delay for a light pulse propagating through hot Rb vapor in the presence of a strong coupling field in a $Λ$ configuration. We demonstrate that the ultra-slow pulse propagation is transformed into superluminal propagation as the one-photon detuning of the light increases due to the change in the transmission resonance lineshape. Negative group velocity as low as -c/10^6=-80 m/s is recorded. We also find that the advance time in the regime of the superluminal propagation grows linearly with increasing laser field power.
