On the uncertainty estimates of the $σ$-pole determination by Padé approximants

We discuss the determination of the $f_0(500)$ (or $σ$) resonance by analytic continuation through Padé approximants of the $ππ$-scattering amplitude from the physical region to the pole in the complex energy plane. The aim is to analyze the uncertainties of the method, having in view the fact that analytic continuation is an ill-posed problem in the sense of Hadamard. Using as input a class of admissible parameterizations of the scalar-isoscalar $ππ$ partial wave, which satisfy with great accuracy the same set of dispersive constraints, we find that the Roy-type integral representations lead to almost identical pole positions for all of them, while the predictions of the Padé approximants have a larger spread, being sensitive to features of the input parameterization that are not controlled by the dispersive constraints. Our conservative conclusion is that the $σ$-pole determination by Padé approximants is consistent with the prediction of Roy-type equations, but has an uncertainty almost a factor two larger.

Functional-analysis based tool for testing quark-hadron duality

Quark-hadron duality is a key concept in QCD, allowing for the description of physical hadronic observables in terms of quark-gluon degrees of freedom. The modern theoretical framework for its implementation is Wilson's operator product expansion (OPE), supplemented by analytic extrapolation from large Euclidean momenta, where the OPE is defined, to the Minkowski axis, where observable quantities are defined. Recently, the importance of additional terms in the expansion of QCD correlators near the Minkowski axis, responsible for quark-hadron duality violations (DVs), was emphasized. In this paper we introduce a mathematical tool that might be useful for the study of DVs in QCD. It is based on finding the minimal distance, measured in the $L^\infty$ norm along a contour in the complex momentum plane, between a class of admissible functions containing the physical amplitude and the asymptotic expansion predicted by the OPE. This minimal distance is given by the norm of a Hankel matrix that can be calculated exactly, using as input the experimental spectral function on a finite interval of the timelike axis. We also comment on the relation between the new functional tool and the more commonly used $χ^2$-based analysis. The approach is illustrated on a toy model for the QCD polarization function recently proposed in the literature.

Two-pion low-energy contribution to the muon $g-2$ with improved precision from analyticity and unitarity

The two-pion contribution from low energies to the muon magnetic moment anomaly, although small, has a large relative uncertainty since in this region the experimental data on the cross sections are neither sufficient nor precise enough. It is therefore of interest to see whether the precision can be improved by means of additional theoretical information on the pion electromagnetic form factor, which controls the leading order contribution. In the present paper we address this problem by exploiting analyticity and unitarity of the form factor in a parametrization-free approach that uses the phase in the elastic region, known with high precision from the Fermi-Watson theorem and Roy equations for $ππ$ elastic scattering as input. The formalism also includes experimental measurements on the modulus in the region 0.65-0.70 GeV, taken from the most recent $e^+e^-\to π^+π^-$ experiments, and recent measurements of the form factor on the spacelike axis. By combining the results obtained with inputs from CMD2, SND, BABAR and KLOE, we make the predictions $a_μ^{ππ, \LO}\,[2 m_π,\, 0.30 \gev]=(0.553 \pm 0.004) \times 10^{-10}$ and $a_μ^{ππ, \LO}\,[0.30 \gev,\, 0.63 \gev]=(133. 083 \pm 0.837)\times 10^{-10}$. These are consistent with the other recent determinations, and have slightly smaller errors.

Expansions of $τ$ hadronic spectral function moments in a nonpower QCD perturbation theory with tamed large order behavior

The moments of the hadronic spectral functions are of interest for the extraction of the strong coupling $α_s$ and other QCD parameters from the hadronic decays of the $τ$ lepton. Motivated by the recent analyses of a large class of moments in the standard fixed-order and contour-improved perturbation theories, we consider the perturbative behavior of these moments in the framework of a QCD nonpower perturbation theory, defined by the technique of series acceleration by conformal mappings, which simultaneously implements renormalization-group summation and has a tame large-order behavior. Two recently proposed models of the Adler function are employed to generate the higher order coefficients of the perturbation series and to predict the exact values of the moments, required for testing the properties of the perturbative expansions. We show that the contour-improved nonpower perturbation theories and the renormalization-group-summed nonpower perturbation theories have very good convergence properties for a large class of moments of the so-called "reference model", including moments that are poorly described by the standard expansions. The results provide additional support for the plausibility of the description of the Adler function in terms of a small number of dominant renormalons.

Perturbative expansion of the QCD Adler function improved by renormalization-group summation and analytic continuation in the Borel plane

We examine the large-order behaviour of a recently proposed renormalization-group-improved expansion of the Adler function in perturbative QCD, which sums in an analytically closed form the leading logarithms accessible from renormalization-group invariance. The expansion is first written as aneffective series in powers of the one-loop coupling, and its leading singularities in the Borel plane are shown to be identical to those of the standard "contour-improved" expansion. Applying the technique of conformal mappings for the analytic continuation in the Borel plane, we define a class of improved expansions, which implement both the renormalization-group invariance and the knowledge about the large-order behaviour of the series. Detailed numerical studies of specific models for the Adler function indicate that the new expansions have remarkable convergence properties up to high orders. Using these expansions for the determination of the strong coupling from the the hadronic width of the $τ$ lepton we obtain, with a conservative estimate of the uncertainty due to the nonperturbative corrections, $α_s(M_τ^2)= 0.3189^{+ 0.0173}_{-0.0151}$, which translates to $α_s(M_Z^2)= 0.1184^{+0.0021}_{-0.0018}$.

Regge analysis of the pi pi scattering amplitude

The theoretical predictions for the subtraction constants lead to a very accurate dispersive representation of the pi pi scattering amplitude below 0.8 GeV. The extension of this representation up to the maximum energy of validity of the Roy equations (1.15 GeV) requires a more precise input at high energies. In this paper we determine the trajectories and residues of the leading Regge contributions to the pi pi amplitude (Pomeron, f and rho), using factorization, phenomenological parametrizations of the pi N and NN total cross sections at high energy and a set of sum rules which connect the high and low energy properties of pi pi scattering. We find that nonleading Regge terms are necessary in order to achieve a smooth transition from the partial waves to the Regge representation at or below 2 GeV. We obtain thus a Regge representation consistent both with the experimental information at high energies and the Roy equations for the partial waves with l =< 4. The uncertainties in our result for the Regge parameters are sizable but in the solutions of the Roy equations, these only manifest themselves above K-Kbar threshold.

Bounds on the spacelike pion electromagnetic form factor from analyticity and unitarity

We use the recently measured accurate BaBaR data on the modulus of the pion electromagnetic form factor, $F_π(t)$, up to an energy of 3 GeV, the I=1 $P$-wave phase of the $ππ$ scattering amplitude up to the $ω-π$ threshold, the pion charge radius known from Chiral Perturbation Theory, and the recently measured JLAB value of $F_π$ in the spacelike region at $t=-2.45 {\rm GeV}^2$ as inputs in a formalism that leads to bounds on $F_π$ in the intermediate spacelike region. We compare our constraints with experimental data and with perturbative QCD along with the results of several theoretical models for the non-perturbative contributions proposed in the literature.

Spacelike pion form factor from analytic continuation and the onset of perturbative QCD

The factorization theorem for exclusive processes in perturbative QCD predicts the behavior of the pion electromagnetic form factor $F(t)$ at asymptotic spacelike momenta $t(=-Q^2)<0$. We address the question of the onset energy using a suitable mathematical framework of analytic continuation, which uses as input the phase of the form factor below the first inelastic threshold, known with great precision through the Fermi-Watson theorem from $ππ$ elastic scattering, and the modulus measured from threshold up to 3 GeV by the BaBar Collaboration. The method leads to almost model-independent upper and lower bounds on the spacelike form factor. Further inclusion of the value of the charge radius and the experimental value at $-2.45 \gev^2$ measured at JLab considerably increases the strength of the bounds in the region $ Q^2 \lesssim 10 \gev^2$, excluding the onset of the asymptotic perturbative QCD regime for $Q^2< 7\gev^2$. We also compare the bounds with available experimental data and with several theoretical models proposed for the low and intermediate spacelike region.

Determination of $α_s(M_τ^2)$ from Improved Fixed Order Perturbation Theory

We revisit the extraction of $α_s(M_τ^2)$ from the QCDperturbative corrections to the hadronic $τ$ branching ratio, using an improved fixed-order perturbation theory based on the explicit summation of all renormalization-group accessible logarithms, proposed some time ago in the literature. In this approach, the powers of the coupling in the expansion of the QCD Adler function are multiplied by a set of functions $D_n$, which depend themselves on the coupling and can be written in a closed form by iteratively solving a sequence of differential equations. We find that the new expansion has an improved behavior in the complex energy plane compared to that of the standard fixed-order perturbation theory (FOPT), and is similar but not identical to the contour-improved perturbation theory (CIPT). With five terms in the perturbative expansion we obtain in the ${\bar{\rm MS}}$ scheme $ α_s(M_τ^2)= 0.338 \pm 0.010$, using as input a precise value for the perturbative contribution to the hadronic width of the $τ$ lepton reported recently in the literature.

Constraining Form Factors with the Method of Unitarity Bounds

The availability of a reliable bound on an integral involving the square of the modulus of a form factor on the unitarity cut allows one to constrain the form factor at points inside the analyticity domain and its shape parameters, and also to isolate domains on the real axis and in the complex energy plane where zeros are excluded. In this lecture note, we review the mathematical techniques of this formalism in its standard form, known as the method of unitarity bounds, and recent developments which allow us to include information on the phase and modulus along a part of the unitarity cut. We also provide a brief summary of some results that we have obtained in the recent past, which demonstrate the usefulness of the method for precision predictions on the form factors.

Constraining the properties of K_{l3} form factors with analyticity and unitarity

Bounds on the shape parameters of K_{l3} form factors are investigated in a general model independent framework. Using the method of unitarity bounds for correlators evaluated in pQCD, chiral symmetry and experimental information on the phase and modulus of πK form factors up to an energy t_{in}=1 GeV^2, we constrain the shape parameters of the scalar and vector form factors, the value of the scalar form factor at t=M_π^2-M_K^2, and exclude regions where zeros can exist on the real energy line and in the complex energy plane.

Expansion functions in perturbative QCD and the determination of $α_s(M_τ^2)$

The conventional series in powers of the coupling in perturbative QCD have zero radius of convergence and fail to reproduce the singularity of the QCD correlators like the Adler function at $α_s=0$. Using the technique of conformal mapping of the Borel plane, combined with the "softening" of the leading singularities, we define a set of new expansion functions that resemble the expanded correlator and share the same singularity at zero coupling. Several different conformal mappings and different ways of implementing the known nature of the first branch-points of the Adler function in the Borel plane are investigated, in both the contour-improved (CI) and fixed-order (FO) versions of renormalization group resummation. We prove the remarkable convergence properties of a set of new CI expansions and use them for a determination of the strong coupling from the hadronic $τ$ decay width. By taking the average upon this set, with a conservative treatment of the errors, we obtain $α_s(M_τ^2)= 0.3195^{+ 0.0189}_{- 0.0138}$.

Implications of the recent high statistics determination of the pion electromagnetic form factor in the timelike region

The recently evaluated two-pion contribution to the muon g-2 and the phase of the pion electromagnetic form factor in the elastic region, known from ππscattering by Fermi-Watson theorem, are exploited by analytic techniques for finding correlations between the coefficients of the Taylor expansion at t=0 and the values of the form factor at several points in the spacelike region. We do not use specific parametrizations and the results are fully independent of the unknown phase in the inelastic region. Using for instance, from recent determinations, = (0.435 \pm 0.005) fm^2 and F(-1.6 GeV^2)=0.243^{+0.022}_{-0.014}, we obtain the allowed ranges 3.75 GeV^{-4}\lesssim c \lesssim 3.98 GeV^{-4} and 9.91 GeV^{-6}\lesssim d \lesssim 10.46 GeV^{-6} for the curvature and the next Taylor coefficient, with a strong correlation between them. We also predict a large region in the complex plane where the form factor can not have zeros.

New perturbation expansions in quantum chromodynamics and the determination of $α_s$

We consider a new class of perturbation expansions, which incorporate in a systematic way the available information about the divergent character of the perturbation series in QCD. The new expansion functions, which replace the powers of the coupling, are defined by the analytic continuation in the Borel plane, achieved through an optimal conformal mapping. We consider several possibilities of implementing the known behaviour of the Borel transform near the leading singularities in the complex plane and using the corresponding expansions. These expansions have the same asymptotic convergence rate, but differ at low orders. We show that the new expansions allow a precise determination of the strong coupling $α_s$ from the hadronic decays of the $τ$ lepton.

Asymptotic power series of field correlators

We address the problem of ambiguity of a function determined by an asymptotic perturbation expansion. Using a modified form of the Watson lemma recently proved elsewhere, we discuss a large class of functions determined by the same asymptotic power expansion and represented by various forms of integrals of the Laplace-Borel type along a general contour in the Borel complex plane. Some remarks on possible applications in QCD are made.

On the ambiguity of functions represented by divergent power series

Assuming the asymptotic character of divergent perturbation series, we address the problem of ambiguity of a function determined by an asymptotic power expansion. We consider functions represented by an integral of the Laplace-Borel type, with a curvilinear integration contour. This paper is a continuation of results recently obtained by us in a previous work. Our new result contained in Lemma 3 of the present paper represents a further extension of the class of contours of integration (and, by this, of the class of functions possessing a given asymptotic expansion), allowing the curves to intersect themselves or return back, closer to the origin. Estimates on the remainders are obtained for different types of contours. Methods of reducing the ambiguity by additional inputs are discussed using the particular case of the Adler function in QCD.

Determination of $α_s(M_τ^2)$: a conformal mapping approach

We discuss a new class of expansions in perturbative QCD, based on the technique of conformal mappings of the Borel plane, and apply them for the determination of $α_s$ from the hadronic decays of the $τ$ lepton. Using the expansion up to fifth order in the $\bar{\rm MS}$ scheme, the method leads to the prediction $α_s(M_τ^2)= 0.320\pm 0.011$.
