Pyroelectric thermo-wave probing of BaZr0.2Ti0.8O3 ceramics

BaxZr1-xTiO3 ceramics with 0.15 < x < 0.25, which have high dielectric permittivity, small leakage currents and low dissipation factor, are promising materials for tunable capacitor devices, multilayered ceramic capacitors and piezoelectric actuators. These materials reveal relaxor properties due to the local chemical strains caused by the isovalent substitution of Ti4+ ions by Zr4+ ions with a larger ionic size. However, to the best of our knowledge, the pyroelectric properties of BaxZr1-xTiO3 ceramics with x~0.2 have not been studied. To fill the gap in knowledge, we perform the pyroelectric thermo-wave probing of BaZr0.2Ti0.8O3 ceramics prepared by the solid-state synthesis. Results of the thermo-wave probing of the most interesting polar states, namely polarized, depolarized, relaxed and restored polarized states, reveal the pronounced pyroelectric response that can be strongly asymmetric with respect to the opposite surfaces of the ceramics. The asymmetry and profiles of pyroelectric response depend significantly on the pre-history of the electric field cycling indicating possible non-ergodic relaxor-type polar states in the ceramic sample. X-ray diffraction spectrum, recorded at room temperature, reveals the virtual absence of the macroscopic tetragonality and the weak asymmetry of the (200) peak, which indicate the small tetragonality inside the Ti-enriched polar nanoregions. Decrease of the relative intensity of the Raman band at 714 cm-1 occurring upon heating evidences the diffuse ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition between 30 C and 40 C. The temperature dependence of the dielectric permittivity obeys modified Curie-Weiss law with power 1.4, indicating that both ordered ferroelectric and relaxor states coexist in the BaTi0.8Zr0.2O3 ceramics. Results can be useful for elaboration of lead-free relaxor ferroelectric ceramics for advanced pyroelectric applications.

Coexistence of Ferroelectric and Relaxor-like Phases in a Multiferroic Solid Solution (1-x)Pb(Fe$_{1/2}$Nb$_{1/2}$)O$_3$-xPbMnO$_3$

Experimental and theoretical studies of unusual polar, dielectric and magnetic properties of room temperature multiferroics, such as perovskites Pb(Fe$_{1/2}$Nb$_{1/2}$)O$_3$ (PFN) and Pb(Fe$_{1/2}$Ta$_{1/2}$)O$_3$ (PFT), are very important. We study the phase composition, dielectric, ferroic properties of the solid solutions PFN and PFT substituted with 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 % of Mn ions prepared by the solid-state synthesis. The XRD analysis confirmed the perovskite structure of sintered ceramics. Electric measurements revealed the ferroelectric-type hysteresis of electric charge in pure PFN ceramics and in PFN ceramics substituted with (10 - 30)% of Mn. At the same time, the PFN-5% Mn ceramics did not show any ferroelectric properties due to very high conductivity.Temperature dependences of the dielectric permittivity of PFN-10% Mn and PFN-15% Mn ceramics have two pronounced maxima, one of which is relatively sharp and has a weak frequency dispersion; another is diffuse and has a strong frequency dispersion. A further increase in the Mn content up to 20% leads to the right shift in the paraelectric-ferroelectric phase transition temperature, as well as to the strong suppression of the second wide maximum, which transforms into a small diffuse shoulder. An increase in the Mn substitution up to 30% leads to a significant decrease in the dielectric permittivity, left shift of its maximum, and induces a pronounced frequency dispersion of the paraelectric-ferroelectric transition temperature, which is inherent to relaxor-like ferroelectrics.Comparison of the model with experiments reveal the coexistence of the ordered ferroelectric-like and disordered relaxor-like phases in the multiferroic solid solutions PFN-Mn and PFT-Mn.

The origin of the ferroelectric-like orthorhombic phase in oxygen-deficient HfO2-y nanoparticles

In this work we established the relationship between the crystalline structure symmetry, point defects and possible appearance of the ferroelectric-like polarization in HfO2-y nanoparticles. Notably, that XRD and EPR analysis revealed the formation of the ferroelectric-like orthorhombic phase in the oxygen-deficient HfO2-y nanoparticles (pure and doped with rare-earth element yttrium). DFT calculations showed that small HfO2 nanoparticles may become polar, especially in the presence of impurity atoms and/or oxygen vacancies. To explain the experimental results, we have modified the effective LGD model through the parameterization approach, focusing on the Landau expansion coefficients associated with the polar (FE) and antipolar (AFE) orderings, which agrees with the performed DFT calculations. The effective LGD model can be useful for the development of the novel generation of silicon-compatible ferroelectric nanomaterials based on the HfxZr1-xO2-y.
