A new approach to the Poincaré center problem

We address the classical (degenerate or non-degenerate) center problem posed by Poincaré in the 19th century for monodromic singularities of analytic families of planar vector fields $\mathcal{X}$. We prove that, generically, every analytic center admits a Laurent inverse integrating factor $V$ in weighted polar coordinates. Moreover, we show that when $\mathcal{X}$ has no local curves of zero angular speed, the Poincaré map is analytic. Based on this result, we derive a theoretical procedure to determine parameter constraints within the family that characterize centers without curves of zero angular speed. Applications to nontrivial families that have resisted other methods are also provided.

Monodromic singularities of Brunella-Miari vector fields with two edges in the Newton diagram

This work focuses on the study of monodromic singularities in planar analytic families of vector fields whose Newton diagram consists of exactly two edges. We begin by analyzing the desingularization scheme of a minimal model of polynomial vector fields, denoted by ${X}$, which includes only the monomials corresponding to the vertices of the Newton diagram. We then extend this minimal model to the so-called Brunella-Miari vector fields ${X} \subset {X}^{[1]}$, incorporating all monomials associated with points lying on the edges of the Newton diagram. As a second extension, we consider vector fields ${X}^{[1]} \subset {X}^{[2]}$ that include higher-order terms corresponding to points located above the polygonal line in the Newton diagram. The key point of our approach is to preserve the desingularization geometry at each extension step. We provide explicit desingularization procedures, which enable the computation of the linear part of the return map $Π$ in cases where the desingularized singularity is associated with a hyperbolic polycycle. Several nontrivial examples are included to illustrate the method.

Characterization of centers by its complex separatrices

In this work we deal with analytic families of real planar vector fields $\mathcal{X}_λ$ having a monodromic singularity at the origin for any $λ\in Λ\subset \mathbb{R}^p$ and depending analytically on the parameters $λ$. There naturally appears the so-called center-focus problem which consists in describing the partition of $Λ$ induced by the centers and the foci at the origin. We give a characterization of the centers (degenerated or not) in terms of a specific integral of the cofactor associated to a real invariant analytic curve passing through the singularity, which always exists. Several consequences and applications are also stated.

Principal Bautin ideal of monodromic singularities with inverse integrating factors

We analyze the structure of the Poincaré map $Π$ associated to a monodromic singularity of an analytic family of planar vector fields. We work under two assumptions. The first one is that the family possesses an inverse integrating factor that can be expanded in Laurent series centered at the singularity after a weighted polar blow-up fixed by the Newton diagram of the family. The second one is that we restrict our analysis to a subset of the monodromic parameter space that assures the non-existence of local curves with zero angular speed. The conclusions are that the asymptotic Dulac expansion of $Π$ does not contain logarithmic terms, indeed it admits a formal power series expansion with a unique independent generalized Poincaré-Lyapunov quantity, which can be computed under some explicit conditions. Moreover we also give conditions that guarantee the analyticity of $Π$, in which case we show that the Bautin ideal is principal and therefore the cyclicity of the singularity with respect to perturbation within the family is zero.

Perturbed rank 2 Poisson systems and periodic orbits on Casimir invariant manifolds

A class of n-dimensional Poisson systems reducible to an unperturbed harmonic oscillator shall be considered. In such case, perturbations leaving invariant a given symplectic leaf shall be investigated. Our purpose will be to analyze the bifurcation phenomena of periodic orbits as a result of these perturbations in the period annulus associated to the unperturbed harmonic oscillator. This is accomplished via the averaging theory up to an arbitrary order in the perturbation parameter e. In that theory we shall also use both branching theory and singularity theory of smooth maps to analyze the bifurcation phenomena at points where the implicit function theorem is not applicable. When the perturbation is given by a polynomial family, the associated Melnikov functions are polynomial and tools of computational algebra based on Gröbner basis are employed in order to reduce the generators of some polynomial ideals needed to analyze the bifurcation problem. When the most general perturbation of the harmonic oscillator by a quadratic perturbation field is considered, the complete bifurcation diagram (except at a high codimension subset) in the parameter space is obtained. Examples are given.

Inverse Jacobi multiplier as a link between conservative systems and Poisson structures

Some aspects of the relationship between conservativeness of a dynamical system (namely the preservation of a finite measure) and the existence of a Poisson structure for that system are analyzed. From the local point of view, due to the Flow-Box Theorem we restrict ourselves to neighborhoods of singularities. In this sense, we characterize Poisson structures around the typical zero-Hopf singularity in dimension 3 under the assumption of having a local analytic first integral with non-vanishing first jet by connecting with the classical Poincaré center problem. From the global point of view, we connect the property of being strictly conservative (the invariant measure must be positive) with the existence of a Poisson structure depending on the phase space dimension. Finally, weak conservativeness in dimension two is introduced by the extension of inverse Jacobi multipliers as weak solutions of its defining partial differential equation and some of its applications are developed. Examples including Lotka-Volterra systems, quadratic isochronous centers, and non-smooth oscillators are provided.

Periodic orbits in analytically perturbed Poisson systems

Analytical perturbations of a family of finite-dimensional Poisson systems are considered. It is shown that the family is analytically orbitally conjugate in $U \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ to a planar harmonic oscillator defined on the symplectic leaves. As a consequence, the perturbed vector field can be transformed in the domain $U$ to the Lagrange standard form. On the latter, use can be made of averaging theory up to second order to study the existence, number and bifurcation phenomena of periodic orbits. Examples are given ranging from harmonic oscillators with a potential and Duffing oscillators, to a kind of zero-Hopf singularity analytic normal form.

Poisson systems as the natural framework for additional first integrals via Darboux invariant hypersurfaces

In the literature, the existence of Darboux polynomials and additional polynomial first integrals has been considered in the case of Hamiltonian systems. In this article such problem is formulated in the more general framework of Poisson structures, which include Hamiltonian systems as a particular case. This generalization allows a natural extension of the previous results, which can now be applied to a larger class of vector fields and is valid for arbitrary diffeomorphisms (instead of canonical transformations). Examples are discussed.

Perturbed Euler top and bifurcation of limit cycles on invariant Casimir surfaces

Analytical perturbations of the Euler top are considered. The perturbations are based on the Poisson structure for such a dynamical system, in such a way that the Casimir invariants of the system remain invariant for the perturbed flow. By means of the Poincaré-Pontryagin theory, the existence of limit cycles on the invariant Casimir surfaces for the perturbed system is investigated up to first order of perturbation, providing sharp bounds for their number. Examples are given.

A survey on the inverse integrating factor

The relation between limit cycles of planar differential systems and the inverse integrating factor was first shown in an article of Giacomini, Llibre and Viano appeared in 1996. From that moment on, many research articles are devoted to the study of the properties of the inverse integrating factor and its relation with limit cycles and their bifurcations. This paper is a summary of all the results about this topic. We include a list of references together with the corresponding related results aiming at being as much exhaustive as possible. The paper is, nonetheless, self-contained in such a way that all the main results on the inverse integrating factor are stated and a complete overview of the subject is given. Each section contains a different issue to which the inverse integrating factor plays a role: the integrability problem, relation with Lie symmetries, the center problem, vanishing set of an inverse integrating factor, bifurcation of limit cycles from either a period annulus or from a monodromic $ω$-limit set and some generalizations.
