Definable functors and Brown--Adams representability

The question of when the derived category of a ring satisfies Brown--Adams representability is revisited via studying the transfer of pure homological dimension along definable functors: it is shown that, for any ring, the pure global dimension of the derived category is at least the pure global dimension of the ring; expanding results of Beligiannis and Keller-Christensen-Neeman. This result is obtained by constructing `change of category' isomorphisms of PExt groups across definable functors. The same isomorphisms illustrate circumstances when one can transfer the property of Brown--Adams representability. We demonstrate how these methods can be used to test whether certain derived category of quasi-coherent sheaves are a Brown category. We also make an investigation into the structure of derived categories of von Neumann regular rings, which are shown in many cases to control Brown--Adams representability; this includes a new proof of the telescope conjecture, and a new and short proof that a coherent ring satisfies Freyd's (strong) generating hypothesis if and only if it is von Neumann regular.

Definable functoriality of tensor-triangular spectra

We prove that the homological and Balmer spectra in tensor-triangular geometry are functorial in certain definable functors, thereby providing an alternative perspective on functoriality in tensor-triangular geometry from the viewpoint of purity, and generalising current results in the literature.

The shift-homological spectrum and parametrising kernels of rank functions

For any compactly generated triangulated category we introduce two topological spaces, the shift-spectrum and the shift-homological spectrum. We use them to parametrise a family of thick subcategories of the compact objects, which we call radical. These spaces can be viewed as non-monoidal analogues of the Balmer and homological spectra arising in tensor-triangular geometry: we prove that for monogenic tensor-triangulated categories the Balmer spectrum is a subspace of the shift-spectrum. To construct these analogues we utilise quotients of the module category, rather than the lattice theoretic methods which have been adopted in other approaches. We characterise radical thick subcategories and show in certain cases, such as the perfect derived categories of tame hereditary algebras or monogenic tensor-triangulated categories, that every thick subcategory is radical. We establish a close relationship between the shift-homological spectrum and the set of irreducible integral rank functions, and provide necessary and sufficient conditions for every radical thick subcategory to be given by an intersection of kernels of rank functions. In order to facilitate these results, we prove that both spaces we introduce may equivalently be described in terms of the Ziegler spectrum.

Definable functors between triangulated categories

We systematically develop the theory of definable functors between compactly generated triangulated categories. Such functors preserve pure triangles, pure injective objects, and definable subcategories, and as such appear in a wide range of algebraic and topological settings. Firstly we investigate and characterise purity preserving functors from a triangulated category into a finitely accessible category with products, which we term coherent functors. This yields a new property for the restricted Yoneda embedding as the universal coherent functor. We build upon the utility of coherent functors to provide several equivalent conditions for an additive, not necessarily triangulated, functor between triangulated categories to be definable: a functor is definable if and only if it preserves filtered homology colimits and products, if and only if it uniquely extends along the restricted Yoneda embedding to a definable functor between the corresponding module categories. We apply these results to the functoriality of the Ziegler spectrum, an object of study in pure homological algebra and representation theory.

The homological spectrum via definable subcategories

We develop an alternative approach to the homological spectrum of a tensor-triangulated category through the lens of definable subcategories. This culminates in a proof that the homological spectrum is homeomorphic to a quotient of the Ziegler spectrum. Along the way, we characterise injective objects in homological residue fields in terms of the definable subcategory corresponding to a given homological prime. We use these results to give a purity perspective on the relationship between the homological and Balmer spectrum.

Finitistic dimensions over commutative DG-rings

In this paper we study the finitistic dimensions of commutative noetherian non-positive DG-rings with finite amplitude. We prove that any DG-module $M$ of finite flat dimension over such a DG-ring satisfies $\mathrm{projdim}_A(M) \leq \mathrm{dim}(\mathrm{H}^0 (A)) - \inf(M)$. We further provide explicit constructions of DG-modules with prescribed projective dimension and deduce that the big finitistic projective dimension satisfies the bounds $\mathrm{dim}(\mathrm{H}^0 (A)) - \mathrm{amp}(A) \leq \mathsf{FPD}(A) \leq \mathrm{dim}(\mathrm{H}^0(A))$. Moreover, we prove that DG-rings exist which achieve either bound. As a direct application, we prove new vanishing results for the derived Hochschild (co)homology of homologically smooth algebras.

Duality pairs, phantom maps, and definability in triangulated categories

We define duality triples and duality pairs in compactly generated triangulated categories and investigate their properties. This enables us to give an elementary way to determine whether a class is closed under pure subobjects, pure quotients and pure extensions, as well as providing a way to show the existence of approximations. One key ingredient is a new characterisation of phantom maps. We then introduce an axiomatic form of Auslander-Gruson-Jensen duality, from which we define dual definable categories, and show that these coincide with symmetric coproduct closed duality pairs. This framework is ubiquitous, encompassing both algebraic triangulated categories and stable homotopy theories. Accordingly, we provide many applications in both settings, with a particular emphasis on silting theory and stratified tensor-triangulated categories.

Purity, ascent, and periodicity for Gorenstein flat cotorsion modules

We investigate purity within the Frobenius category of Gorenstein flat cotorsion modules, which can be seen as an infinitely generated analogue of the Frobenius category of Gorenstein projective objects. As such, the associated stable category can be viewed as an alternative approach to a big singularity category, which is equivalent to Krause's when the ring is Gorenstein. We study the pure structure of the stable category, and show it is fundamentally related to the pure structure of the Gorenstein flat modules. Following that, we give conditions for extension of scalars to preserve Gorenstein flat cotorsion modules. In this case, one obtains an induced triangulated functor on the stable categories. We show that under mild conditions that these functors preserve the pure structure, both on the triangulated and module category level. Along the way, we consider particular phenomena over commutative rings, the cumulation of which is an extension of Kn\"{o}rrer periodicity, giving a triangulated equivalence between Krause's big singularity categories for a complete hypersurface singularity and its twofold double-branched cover.

Cotilting with balanced big Cohen-Macaulay modules

Over $d$-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay rings with a canonical module, $d$-cotilting classes containing the maximal and balanced big Cohen-Macaulay modules are classified. Particular emphasis is paid to the direct limit closure of the balanced big Cohen-Macaulay modules, and the class of modules of depth $d$, which are shown to respectively be the smallest and largest such cotilting classes. Considerations are then given to the interplay between local cohomology, canonical duality and cotilting modules for the class of Gorenstein flat modules over Gorenstein local rings.

Two definable subcategories of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules

Over a Cohen-Macaulay ring we consider two extensions of the maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules from the viewpoint of definable subcategories, which are closed under direct limits, direct products and pure submodules. After describing these categories, we compare them and consider which properties they inherit from the maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules. We then consider some further properties of these classes and how they interact with the entire module category.
