Precursor problem and holographic mutual information

The recent proposal of Almheiri et al.http://arxiv.org/abs/1411.7041, together with the Ryu-Takayanagi formula, implies the entanglement wedge hypothesis for certain choices of boundary subregions. This fact is derived in the pure AdS space. A similar conclusion holds in the presence of quantum corrections, but in a more restricted domain of applicability. We also comment on http://arxiv.org/abs/1601.05416 and some similarities and differences with this work

Ground state entanglement constrains low-energy excitations

For a general quantum many-body system, we show that its ground-state entanglement imposes a fundamental constraint on the low-energy excitations. For two-dimensional systems, our result implies that any system that supports anyons must have a nonvanishing topological entanglement entropy. We demonstrate the generality of this argument by applying it to three-dimensional quantum many-body systems, and showing that there is a pair of ground state topological invariants that are associated to their physical boundaries. From the pair, one can determine whether the given boundary can or cannot absorb point-like or line-like excitations.

Long-range mutual information and topological uncertainty principle

Ordered phases in Landau paradigm can be diagnosed by a local order parameter, whereas topologically ordered phases cannot be detected in such a way. In this paper, we propose long-range mutual information(LRMI) as a unified diagnostic for both conventional long-range order and topological order. Using the LRMI, we characterize orders in $n+1$D gapped systems as $m$-membrane condensates with $ 0 \leq m \leq n-1$. The familiar conventional order and 2+1D topological orders are respectively identified as $0$-membrane and $1$-membrane condensates. We propose and study the topological uncertainty principle, which describes the non-commuting nature of non-local order parameters in topological orders.

Localization from superselection rules in translation invariant systems

We study a translation invariant spin model in a three-dimensional regular lattice, called the cubic code model, in the presence of arbitrary extensive perturbations. Below a critical perturbation strength, we show that most states with finite energy are localized; the overwhelming majority of such states have energy concentrated around a finite number of defects, and remain so for a time that is near-exponential in the distance between the defects. This phenomenon is due to an emergent superselection rule and does not require any disorder. An extensive number of local integrals of motion for these finite energy sectors are identified as well. Our analysis extends more generally to systems with immobile topological excitations.

Local integrals of motion and the logarithmic lightcone in many-body localized systems

We propose to define full many-body localization in terms of the recently introduced integrals of motion[Chandran et al., arXiv:1407.8480], which characterize the time-averaged response of the system to a local perturbation. The quasi-locality of such integrals of motion implies an effective lightcone that grows logarithmically in time. This subsequently implies that (i) the average entanglement entropy can grow at most logarithmically in time for a global quench from a product state, and (ii) with high probability, the time evolution of a local operator for a time interval $|t|$ can be classically simulated with a resource that scales polynomially in $|t|$.

Entropic topological invariant for a gapped one-dimensional system

We propose an order parameter for a general one-dimensional gapped system with an open boundary condition. The order parameter can be computed from the ground state entanglement entropy of some regions near one of the boundaries. Hence, it is well-defined even in the presence of arbitrary interaction and disorder. We also show that it is invariant under a finite-depth local quantum circuit, suggesting its stability against an arbitrary local perturbation that does not close the energy gap. Further, it can unambiguously distinguish Majorana chain from a trivial chain under a global fermion parity conservation. We argue that the order parameter can be in principle measured in an optical lattice system.

Constructing local integrals of motion in the many-body localized phase

Many-body localization provides a generic mechanism of ergodicity breaking in quantum systems. In contrast to conventional ergodic systems, many-body localized (MBL) systems are characterized by extensively many local integrals of motion (LIOM), which underlie the absence of transport and thermalization in these systems. Here we report a physically motivated construction of local integrals of motion in the MBL phase. We show that any local operator (e.g., a local particle number or a spin flip operator), evolved with the system's Hamiltonian and averaged over time, becomes a LIOM in the MBL phase. Such operators have a clear physical meaning, describing the response of the MBL system to a local perturbation. In particular, when a local operator represents a density of some globally conserved quantity, the corresponding LIOM describes how this conserved quantity propagates through the MBL phase. Being uniquely defined and experimentally measurable, these LIOMs provide a natural tool for characterizing the properties of the MBL phase, both in experiments and numerical simulations. We demonstrate the latter by numerically constructing an extensive set of LIOMs in the MBL phase of a disordered spin chain model. We show that the resulting LIOMs are quasi-local, and use their decay to extract the localization length and establish the location of the transition between the MBL and ergodic phases.

Reconstructing quantum states from local data

We consider the problem of reconstructing global quantum states from local data. Because the reconstruction problem has many solutions in general, we consider the reconstructed state of maximum global entropy consistent with the local data. We show that unique ground states of local Hamiltonians are exactly reconstructed as the maximal entropy state. More generally, we show that if the state in question is a ground state of a local Hamiltonian with a degenerate space of locally indistinguishable ground states, then the maximal entropy state is close to the ground state projector. We also show that local reconstruction is possible for thermal states of local Hamiltonians. Finally, we discuss a procedure to certify that the reconstructed state is close to the true global state. We call the entropy of our reconstructed maximum entropy state the "reconstruction entropy", and we discuss its relation to emergent geometry in the context of holographic duality.

Modulus of convexity for operator convex functions

Given an operator convex function $f(x)$, we obtain an operator-valued lower bound for $cf(x) + (1-c)f(y) - f(cx + (1-c)y)$, $c \in [0,1]$. The lower bound is expressed in terms of the matrix Bregman divergence. A similar inequality is shown to be false for functions that are convex but not operator convex.

On the informational completeness of local observables

For a general multipartite quantum state, we formulate a locally checkable condition, under which the expectation values of certain nonlocal observables are completely determined by the expectation values of some local observables. The condition is satisfied by ground states of gapped quantum many-body systems in two spatial dimensions, assuming a widely conjectured form of area law is correct. Its implications on the studies of gapped quantum many-body systems, quantum state tomography, and quantum state verification are discussed. These results are based on a partial characterization of states with small yet nonzero conditional mutual information, which may be of independent interest.

Long-range entanglement is necessary for a topological storage of quantum information

A general inequality between entanglement entropy and a number of topologically ordered states is derived, even without using the properties of the parent Hamiltonian or the formalism of topological quantum field theory. Given a quantum state $\ketψ$, we obtain an upper bound on the number of distinct states that are locally indistinguishable from $\ketψ$. The upper bound is determined only by the entanglement entropy of some local subsystems. As an example, we show that $\log N \leq 2γ$ for a large class of topologically ordered systems on a torus, where $N$ is the number of topologically protected states and $γ$ is the constant subcorrection term of the entanglement entropy. We discuss applications to quantum many-body systems that do not have any low-energy topological quantum field theory description, as well as tradeoff bounds for general quantum error correcting codes.

Local non-CSS quantum error correcting code on a three-dimensional lattice

We present a family of non-CSS quantum error-correcting code consisting of geometrically local stabilizer generators on a 3D lattice. We study the Hamiltonian constructed from ferromagnetic interaction of overcomplete set of local stabilizer generators. The degenerate ground state of the system is characterized by a quantum error-correcting code whose number of encoded qubits are equal to the second Betti number of the manifold. These models (i) have solely local interactions; (ii) admit a strong-weak duality relation with an Ising model on a dual lattice; (iii) have topological order in the ground state, some of which survive at finite temperature; and (iv) behave as classical memory at finite temperature.

Determining the structure of real-space entanglement spectrum from approximate conditional independence

We study the ground state of a gapped quantum many-body system whose entanglement entropy $S_A$ can be expressed as $S_A = a|\partial A| - γ$, where $a, γ$ are some constants and $|\partial A|$ is an area of the subsystem $A$. By using a recently proved operator extension of strong subadditivity of entropy,[I. H. Kim, J. Math. Phys. 53, 122204 (2012)] we show that certain linear combination of the real-space entanglement spectrum has a small correlation with almost any local operator. Our result implies that there exists a structure relating the real-space entanglement spectrum over different subsystems. Further, this structure is inherited from the generic property of the ground state alone, suggesting that the locality of the entanglement spectrum may be attributed to the area law of entanglement entropy.

Stability of topologically invariant order parameters at finite temperature

Topological entanglement entropy is a topological invariant which can detect topological order of quantum many-body ground state. We assume an existence of such order parameter at finite temperature which is invariant under smooth deformation of the subsystems, and study its stability under hamiltonian perturbation. We apply this assumption to a Gibbs state of hamiltonian which satisfies so called `strong commuting' condition, which we shall define in the paper. Interesting models in this category include local hamiltonian models based on quantum error correcting code. We prove a stability of such topologically invariant order parameter against arbitrary perturbation which can be expressed as a sum of geometrically local bounded-norm terms. The first order correction against such perturbation vanishes in the thermodynamic limit.

3D local qupit quantum code without string logical operator

Recently Haah introduced a new quantum error correcting code embedded on a cubic lattice. One of the defining properties of this code is the absence of string logical operator. We present new codes with similar properties by relaxing the condition on the local particle dimension. The resulting code is well-defined when the local Hilbert space dimension is prime. These codes can be divided into two different classes: the local stabilizer generators are either symmetric or antisymmetric with respect to the inversion operation. These is a nontrivial correspondence between these two classes. For any symmetric code without string logical operator, there exists a complementary antisymmetric code with the same property and vice versa. We derive a sufficient condition for the absence of string logical operator in terms of the algebraic constraints on the defining parameters of the code. Minimal number of local particle dimension which satisfies the condition is 5. These codes have logarithmic energy barrier for any logical error.

Quamtumness, Generalized Spherical 2-Design and Symmetric Informationally Complete POVM

C. A. Fuchs and M. Sasaki defined the quantumness of a set of quantum states in \cite{Quantumness}, which is closely related to the fidelity loss in transmission of the quantum states through a classical channel. In \cite{Fuchs}, Fuchs showed that in $d$-dimensional Hilbert space, minimum quantumness is $\frac{2}{d+1}$, and this can be achieved by all rays in the space. He left an open problem, asking whether fewer than $d^2$ states can achieve this bound. Recently, in a different context, A. J. Scott introduced a concept of generalized $t$-design in \cite{GenSphet}, which is a natural generalization of spherical $t$-design. In this paper, we show that the lower bound on the quantumness can be achieved if and only if the states form a generalized 2-design. As a corollary, we show that this bound can be only achieved if the number of states are larger or equal to $d^2$, answering the open problem. Furthermore, we also show that the minimal set of such ensemble is Symmetric Informationally Complete POVM(SIC-POVM). This leads to an equivalence relation between SIC-POVM and minimal set of ensemble achieving minimal quantumness.
