Textures as a phase-transition probe for quantum spin chains

The idea of quantum texture has been recently proposed and used as a tool for quantifying coherences and for quantum gate identification. In this work we offer a study on its usage to quantum phase transitions, demonstrating the rugosity metric as a simple tool for effective phase-transition probing. We establish the link between rugosity in the computational basis and the hierarchy of spin correlators, and analyze rugosities defined in the global ground-state and in ground-states belonging to different magnetization sectors (to which we refer to as global vs symmetry-resolved rugosities) to study the phase diagram of the Heisenberg XXZ model. We find distinct rugosity signatures at both transition points. In particular, a sharp feature appears at $Δ=1$ already for small systems, revealing a pronounced sensitivity of the correlation hierarchy encoded by the texture to this point. Since the BKT transition coincides with the isotropic $SU(2)$ point of the XXZ model, this behavior may reflect a particular sensitivity of rugosity to the structure of the spin-correlation hierarchy at isotropy.

Controlling quantum phases with electric fields in one-dimensional Hubbard systems

Quantum systems under electric fields provide a powerful framework for uncovering and controlling novel quantum phases, especially in low-dimensional systems with strong correlations. In this work, we investigate quantum phase transitions induced by an electric potential difference in a one-dimensional half-filled Hubbard chain. By analyzing (i) tunneling and pairing mechanisms, (ii) charge and spin gaps, and (iii) entanglement between the chain halves, we identify three distinct phases: Mott insulator, metal and band-like insulator. The metallic regime, characterized by the closing of both charge and spin gaps, is accompanied by a field-dependent kinetic energy and a quasi-periodic oscillatory behavior of pairing response and entanglement. Although the metallic phase persists for different magnetizations, its extent in the phase diagram shrinks as spin polarization increases.

Formation of spin and charge ordering in the extended Hubbard model during a finite-time quantum quench

We investigate the formation of charge and spin ordering by starting from a non-interacting state and studying how it evolves in time under a Hamiltonian with finite electronic interactions. We consider the one-dimensional, half-filled extended Hubbard model, which we solve within time-dependent density matrix renormalization group. By employing linear finite-time quenches in the onsite and nearest-neighbor interactions, we find the existence of impulse, intermediate, and adiabatic regimes of time evolution. For the quenches we analyze, we observe that the adiabatic regime is reached with distinct ramping time scales depending on whether the charge density wave (CDW) or the spin density wave (SDW) is formed. The former needs to be slower than the latter to prevent entangled excited states from being accessed during the quench. More interestingly, in the intermediate regime, we observe an enhancement of the entanglement entropy with respect to its initial value, which precedes the formation of the CDW ordering; a similar enhancement is not seen in the quench towards SDW. Our findings also show that the breaking of the system integrability, by turning on the nearest-neighbor interactions, does not give rise to significant changes in the non-equilibrium behavior within the adiabatic approximation.
