J-ternary algebras, structurable algebras, and Lie superalgebras

A Lie superalgebra is attached to any finite-dimensional J-ternary algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 3, using a process of semisimplification via tensor categories. Some of the exceptional simple Lie algebras, specific of this characteristic, are obtained in this way from J-ternary algebras coming from structurable algebras and, in particular, a new magic square of Lie superalgebras is constructed, with entries depending on a pair of composition algebras.

Short (SL2xSL2)-structures on Lie algebras

S-structures on Lie algebras, introduced by Vinberg, represent a broad generalization of the notion of gradings by abelian groups. Gradings by, not necessarily reduced, root systems provide many examples of natural S-structures. Here we deal with a situation not covered by these gradings: the short (SL2xSL2)-structures, where the reductive group is the simplest semisimple but not simple reductive group. The algebraic objects that coordinatize these structures are the J-ternary algebras of Allison, endowed with a nontrivial idempotent.

Codes, S-structures, and exceptional Lie algebras

The exceptional simple Lie algebras of types E7 and E8 are endowed with optimal $SL_2^n$-structures, and are thus described in terms of the corresponding coordinate algebras. These are nonassociative algebras which much resemble the so called code algebras.

The Supermagic Square in characteristic 3 and Jordan superalgebras

Recently, the classical Freudenthal Magic Square has been extended over fields of characteristic 3 with two more rows and columns filled with (mostly simple) Lie superalgebras specific of this characteristic. This Supermagic Square will be reviewed and some of the simple Lie superalgebras that appear will be shown to be isomorphic to the Tits-Kantor-Koecher Lie superalgebras of some Jordan superalgebras.

The extended Freudenthal Magic Square and Jordan algebras

The Lie superalgebras in the extended Freudenthal Magic Square in characteristic 3 are shown to be related to some known simple Lie superalgebras, specific to this characteristic, constructed in terms of orthogonal and symplectic triple systems, which are defined in terms of central simple degree three Jordan algebras.

An extended Freudenthal Magic Square in characteristic 3

Freudenthal's Magic Square, which in characteristic 0 contains the exceptional Lie algebras other than G2, is extended over fields of characteristic 3, through the use of symmetric composition superalgebras, to a larger square that contains both Lie algebras and superalgebras. With one exception, the simple Lie superalgebras that appear have no counterpart in characteristic 0.
