A study on Dusty Plasma Physics and the examination of Jeans Criteria for the Milky Way

Since the early 1990s, there has been significant interest in the physics of dusty plasmas, which has now become a new discipline in plasma science. Dusty plasma exhibits new and unusual behaviour, and provides a possibility for modified or entirely new collective modes of oscillations, instabilities as well as coherent nonlinear structures.\\ First, a review of the important recurring terms -- The Cosmic Waves (CRs), the Alfven Waves (AWs), and the associated charged dust grains is presented. Starting from the basic composition of the CRs to their scattering mechanism, along with the different modes of scattering, is presented, along with the modes of confinement and a precise definition of each term. The paper also includes some useful diagrams and brief notes from the references. \\ Gravitation plays a significant role in the collapse of matter and the formation of cosmological structures. Unlike a static universe, this paper investigates the Jeans instability in a radiation-pressure-dominated expanding universe using the Einstein-de Sitter model for Euclidean geometry with zero curvature ($\kappa=0$). The fluid model for an expanding universe is constructed, and by taking small perturbations, the perturbed fluid equations are obtained. The dispersion relation of gravitational instability is derived using plane-wave solutions. In the static case (Newtonian cosmology), the classical Jeans instability criterion is revisited and modified in an expanding universe. The critical Jeans wave number of perturbations to excite Jeans instability depends upon the time-dependent expansion factor $S(t)$. It is found that short-wavelength perturbations are expected during the inflationary period of big bang cosmology, which are responsible for gravitational collapse and the formation of galaxies.

Aligned and misaligned metallicity gradients in young stars and star-forming regions in the EAGLE discs

Disc galaxies exhibit radial metallicity gradients in both their stellar and gaseous components. The star-forming gas (SFG) in HII regions and young stars (YSs) trace the recent evolutionary history of the galaxy. We aim to assess the extent to which the joint analysis of metallicity gradient alignment in YSs and SFG can constrain the recent evolutionary history of galaxies. Using the high-resolution run of the EAGLE project, we derived radial, azimuthally averaged oxygen abundance profiles for YSs (age < 2 Gyr) and SFG and measured their gradients as the slopes of linear fits to these profiles. We classified galaxies into four groups based on the signs (N for negative and P for positive) of the slopes: NN, NP, PP, and PN (the first letter is for YSs and the second for SFG). We found that galaxies with NN, NP, PP, and PN combinations of metallicity profiles reflect different evolutionary paths over the past ~ 2 Gyr. NN galaxies exhibit sustained inside-out growth accompanied by high star formation efficiency, whereas NP and PP systems show evidence of recent or ongoing feedback-driven disruption, with PP galaxies likely being predominantly shaped by supernova feedback. PN galaxies, by contrast, show evidence of past violent events followed by gradient recovery, highlighting the interplay between inflows, feedback, and gas cooling in shaping metallicity distributions. The degree of alignment between the stellar and gas metallicity gradients provides a way to time the occurrence of significant events in the evolutionary history of galaxies, which contribute through a combination of gas inflows, star formation triggering, and metal mixing. They could also serve as probes of sub-grid physics when observations provide suitable comparison datasets. [Abridged]

The CIELO Project: The Chemo-dynamical properties of gaLaxies and the cosmic web

The CIELO project introduces a novel set of chemo-dynamical zoom-in simulations designed to simultaneously resolve galaxies and their nearby environments. The initial conditions include a diverse range of cosmic structures, such as local groups, filaments, voids, and walls, allowing for a detailed exploration of galaxies within the broader context of the cosmic web. This study presents the initial conditions and characterizes the global properties of CIELO galaxies and their environments. It focuses on galaxies with stellar masses ranging from log [8,11] solar masses and examines key scaling relations, including the mass-size relation, the Tully-Fisher relation, and the mass-metallicity relation for both stars and star-forming gas. The DisPerSe algorithm was used to determine the positions of CIELO galaxies within the cosmic web, with a specific focus on the Pehuen haloes. The selection of local group volumes was guided by criteria based on the relative positions and velocities of the two primary galaxies. The Pehuen regions were chosen to map walls, filaments, and voids. Synthetic images in the SDSS i, r, and g bands were generated using the SKIRT radiative transfer code. Additionally, a dynamical decomposition was performed to classify galaxy morphologies into bulge, disc, and stellar halo components (abridged).
