LLL-reduction for Integer Knapsacks

Given an integer mxn matrix A satisfying certain regularity assumptions, a well-known integer programming problem asks to find an integer point in the associated knapsack polytope P(A, b)={x: A x= b, x>=0} or determine that no such point exists. We obtain a LLL-based polynomial time algorithm that solves the problem subject to a constraint on the location of the vector b.

Generalized Frobenius numbers: Bounds and average behavior

We produce new upper and lower bounds for the s-Frobenius number by relating it to the so called s-covering radius of a certain convex body with respect to a certain lattice; this generalizes a well-known theorem of R. Kannan for the classical Frobenius number. Using these bounds, we obtain results on the average behavior of the s-Frobenius number, extending analogous recent investigations for the classical Frobenius number by a variety of authors. We also derive bounds on the s-covering radius, an interesting geometric quantity in its own right.

On Feasibility of Integer Knapsacks

Given an integer mxn matrix A satisfying certain regularity assumptions, we consider the set F(A) of all integer vectors b such that the associated knapsack polytope P(A,b)={x: Ax=b, x>=0} contains an integer point. When m=1 the set F(A) is known to contain all consecutive integers greater than the Frobenius number associated with A. In this paper we introduce the diagonal Frobenius number g(A) which reflects in an analogous way feasibility properties of the problem and the structure of F(A) in the general case. We give an optimal upper bound for g(A) and also estimate the asymptotic growth of the diagonal Frobenius number on average.

Expected Frobenius numbers

We show that for large instances the order of magnitude of the expected Frobenius number is (up to a constant depending only on the dimension) given by its lower bound.

Power maps and subvarieties of the complex algebraic $n$--torus

Given a subvariety $V$ of the complex algebraic torus ${\mathbb G}_{\rm m}^n$ defined by polynomials of total degree at most $d$ and a power map $ϕ: {\mathbb G}_{\rm m}^n \to {\mathbb G}_{\rm m}^n$, the points ${\bf x}$ whose forward orbits ${\mathcal O}_ϕ({\bf x})$ belong to $V$ form its {\em stable} subvariety $S(V,ϕ)$. The main result of the paper provides an upper bound $T=T(n,d,ϕ)$ for the number of iterations of the power map $ϕ$ required to ``cut off'' the points of $V$ that do not belong to $S$.

Solving algebraic equations in roots of unity

This paper is devoted to finding solutions of polynomial equations in roots of unity. It was conjectured by S. Lang and proved by M. Laurent that all such solutions can be described in terms of a finite number of parametric families called maximal torsion cosets. We obtain new explicit upper bounds for the number of maximal torsion cosets on an algebraic subvariety of the complex algebraic $n$-torus ${\mathbb G}_{\rm m}^n$. In contrast to earlier works that give the bounds of polynomial growth in the maximum total degree of defining polynomials, the proofs of our results are constructive. This allows us to obtain a new algorithm for determining maximal torsion cosets on an algebraic subvariety of ${\mathbb G}_{\rm m}^n$.

An Optimal Lower Bound for the Frobenius Problem

Given $N$ positive integers $a_1, ..., a_N$ with $\gcd(a_1, ..., a_N)=1$, let $f_N$ denote the largest natural number which is not a positive integer combination of $a_1, ..., a_N$. This paper gives an optimal lower bound for $f_N$ in terms of the absolute inhomogeneous minimum of the standard $(N-1)$-simplex.

Best Simultaneous Diophantine Approximations under a Constraint on the Denominator

We investigate the problem of best simultaneous Diophantine approximation under a constraint on the denominator, as proposed by Jurkat. New lower estimates for optimal approximation constants are given in terms of critical determinants of suitable star bodies. Tools are results on simultaneous Diophantine approximation of rationals by rationals with smaller denominator. Finally, the approximation results are applied to the decomposition of integer vectors.

Siegel's Lemma and Sum-Distinct Sets

We give a sharpened form of Siegel Lemma's w. r. t. the maximum norm. This implies a new lower bound on the greatest element of a sum-distinct set of positive integers (Erdös-Moser problem). The main tools are Minkowski's theorem on successive minima and the Busemann theorem from convex geometry.

Lattice Points in Large Borel Sets and Successive Minima

Let $B$ be a Borel set in $\mathbb E^{d}$ with volume $V(B)=\infty$. It is shown that almost all lattices $L$ in $\mathbb E^{d}$ contain infinitely many pairwise disjoint $d$-tuples, that is sets of $d$ linearly independent points in $B$. A consequence of this result is the following: let $S$ be a star body in $\mathbb E^{d}$ with $V(S)=\infty$. Then for almost all lattices $L$ in $\mathbb E^{d}$ the successive minima $λ_{1}(S,L),..., λ_{d}(S,L)$ of $S$ with respect to $L$ are 0. A corresponding result holds for most lattices in the Baire category sense. A tool for the latter result is the semi-continuity of the successive minima.

Successive Minima and Best Simultaneous Diophantine Approximations

We study the problem of best approximations of a vector $α\in{\mathbb R}^n$ by rational vectors of a lattice $Λ\subset {\mathbb R}^n$ whose common denominator is bounded. To this end we introduce successive minima for a periodic lattice structure and extend some classical results from geometry of numbers to this structure. This leads to bounds for the best approximation problem which generalize and improve former results.
