Classification of Artin groups admitting retractions onto their parabolic subgroups

We classify the Artin groups that admit retractions onto all of their parabolic subgroups. Our approach relies on a detailed analysis of triangular subgroups, with a key ingredient being the classification of homomorphisms between dihedral Artin groups that map one of the standard generators to a standard generator. As a consequence, we show that whenever an Artin group admits retractions to parabolic subgroups, it also admits ordinary ones - that is, retractions that send each standard generator either to a standard generator or to the identity.

Magnus submonoids and membership problems in one-relator, surface and hyperbolic groups

Motivated by its applications to the word problem for one-relator inverse monoids, via results of Ivanov, Margolis, and Meakin (2001), we prove several decidability and undecidability results about the submonoid membership problem in one-relator, surface and hyperbolic groups. We prove a general result that gives sufficient conditions under which membership in submonoids of certain free-by-cyclic one-relator groups is decidable. We apply this result to show that membership in various families of submonoids of surface groups is decidable. We study graded submonoids of one-relator groups, proving results that give conditions under which such a submonoid has decidable membership with linear distortion. These results are then applied to improve on a result of Margolis, Meakin and \v{S}unik by showing the prefix monoid of a surface group has linear distortion. Our results significantly extend previously known positive results proving decidability of membership in (non group) submonoids of surface groups. We also apply our general results, and other techniques, to show that the Magnus submonoid membership problem is decidable in several families of one-relator groups including: surface groups, Baumslag--Solitar groups, and in certain free-by-cyclic one-relator groups. We also prove results about the related positivity problem (also called the quasi-Magnus problem) which asks whether membership in the submonoid generate by $A$ is decidable. We resolve a problem posed by McCammond and Meakin in 2006 by showing that there is a hyperbolic group $G$ generated by $A$ such that it is undecidable whether an element can be represented by a positive word on the generators $A$. We show in addition this hyperbolic group can be chosen to be residually finite. We do this by giving a new general method for constructing finitely presented groups with undecidable positivity problem.

Conjugacy problem in T-RAAGs

In this paper, we construct an implementable algorithm which solves the conjugacy problem in twisted right-angled Artin groups (T-RAAGs). In certain cases, the complexity is known to be linear, by reducing the problem to the twisted conjugacy problem in right-angled Artin groups. We also show that T-RAAGs are biautomatic, providing an alternative solution to the conjugacy problem.

Droms Theorems for twisted right-angled Artin groups

We characterize twisted right-angled Artin groups whose finitely generated subgroups are also twisted right-angled Artin groups. Additionally, we give a classification of coherence within this class of groups in terms of the defining graph. Furthermore, we provide a solution to the isomorphism problem for a notable subclass of these groups.

On Subgroup Separability and Membership Problems in Twisted Right-Angled Artin Groups

We characterize twisted right-angled Artin groups (T-RAAGs) that are subgroup separable using only their defining mixed graphs: such a group is subgroup separable if and only if the underlying simplicial graph contains neither induced paths nor squares on four vertices. This generalizes the results of Metaftsis-Raptis on classical right-angled Artin groups. Additionally, we show that the subgroup membership problem is decidable when the group is coherent, which occurs precisely when the defining mixed graph is chordal. We also address the rational and submonoid membership problems by exhibiting a cone-family of graphs for which the corresponding T-RAAGs have decidable rational and submonoid membership problems.

The submonoid and rational subset membership problems for Artin groups

We demonstrate that the submonoid membership problem and the rational subset membership problem are equivalent in Artin groups. Both these problem are undecidable in a given Artin group if and only if the group embeds the right-angled Artin groups of rank 4 over a path or a square; and this can be characterized using only the defining graph of the Artin group. These results generalize the ones by Lohrey - Steinberg for right-angled Artin groups. Moreover, both these decision problems are decidable for a given Artin group if and only if the group is subgroup separable. This equivalence for right-angled Artin groups is provided by Lohrey - Steinberg and Metaftsis - Raptis. The equivalence for general Artin groups comes from some observations here and the characterization of separable Artin groups by Almeida - Lima.

On Artin groups admitting retractions to parabolic subgroups

We generalize the retractions to standard parabolic subgroups for even Artin groups to FC-type Artin groups and other more general families. We prove that these retractions uniquely extend to any parabolic subgroup. We use retractions to generalize the results of Antol\'in and Foniqi that reduce the problem of intersection of parabolic subgroups to weaker conditions. As a corollary, we characterize coherence for the FC case.

Twisted right-angled Artin groups

We present a complete rewriting system for twisted right-angled Artin groups. Utilizing the normal form coming from the rewriting system, we provide applications that illustrate differences and similarities with right-angled Artin groups, both at the geometric and algebraic levels.

Subgroups of even Artin groups of FC-type

We prove a Tits alternative theorem for subgroups of finitely generated even Artin groups of FC type (EAFC groups), stating that there exists a finite index subgroup such that every subgroup of it is either finitely generated abelian, or maps onto a non-abelian free group. Parabolic subgroups play a key role, and we show that parabolic subgroups of EAFC groups are closed under taking roots.

Membership problems for positive one-relator groups and one-relation monoids

Motivated by approaches to the word problem for one-relation monoids arising from work of Adian and Oganesian (1987), Guba (1997), and Ivanov, Margolis and Meakin (2001), we study the submonoid and rational subset membership problems in one-relation monoids and in positive one-relator groups. We give the first known examples of positive one-relator groups with undecidable submonoid membership problem, and apply this to give the first known examples of one-relation monoids with undecidable submonoid membership problem. We construct several infinite families of one-relation monoids with undecidable submonoid membership problem, including examples that are defined by relations of the form $w=1$ but which are not groups, and examples defined by relations of the form $u=v$ where both of $u$ and $v$ are non-empty. As a consequence we obtain a classification of the right-angled Artin groups that can arise as subgroups of one-relation monoids. We also give examples of monoids with a single defining relation of the form $aUb = a$, and examples of the form $aUb=aVa$, with undecidable rational subset membership problem. We give a one-relator group defined by a freely reduced word of the form $uv^{-1}$ with $u, v$ positive words, in which the prefix membership problem is undecidable. Finally, we prove the existence of a special two-relator inverse monoid with undecidable word problem, and in which both the relators are positive words. As a corollary, we also find a positive two-relator group with undecidable prefix membership problem. In proving these results, we introduce new methods for proving undecidability of the rational subset membership problem in monoids and groups, including by finding suitable embeddings of certain trace monoids.
