Splitting rates in QCD plasmas from a non-perturbative determination of the momentum broadening kernel $C(q_{\bot})$

We exploit a recent non-perturbative determination of the momentum broadening kernel $C(b_{\bot})$ in impact parameter space \cite{Moore:2021jwe}, to determine the momentum space broadening kernel $C(q_{\bot})$ in high-temperature QCD plasmas. We show how to use the non-pertubatively determined kernel $C(q_{\bot})$ to compute the medium-induced splitting rates in a QCD plasma of finite size. We compare the resulting in-medium splitting rates to the results obtained with leading-order and next-to-leading order perturbative determinations of $C(q_{\bot})$, as well as with various approximations of the splitting employed in the literature. Generally, we find that the differences in the splitting rates due to the momentum broadening kernel are larger than the errors associated with approximations of the splitting rate.

Medium-induced fragmentation and equilibration of highly energetic partons

We investigate the energy loss and equilibration of highly energetic particles/jets inside a QCD medium. Based on an effective kinetic description of QCD, including $2\leftrightarrow 2$ elastic processes, radiative $1\leftrightarrow 2$ processes, as well as the back-reaction of jet constituents onto the thermal medium, we describe the in-medium evolution of jets from the energy scale of the jet $\sim E$ all the way to the medium scale $\sim T $. While elastic processes and back-reaction are important to describe the equilibration of soft fragments of the jet, we find that the energy loss is dominated by an inverse turbulent cascade due to successive radiative branchings, which has interesting implications for the energy spectra and chemistry of jet fragments.

Energy loss and equilibration of jets in a QCD plasma

We investigate the medium induced fragmentation of jets in a high-temperature QCD plasma. Based on an effective kinetic theory of QCD, we study the non-equilibrium evolution of the jet shower and the chemical equilibration of jet fragments in the medium. By including radiative emissions as well as elastic interactions, our approach extends all the way from the jet energy scale to the temperature of the medium and includes important effects such as the recoil of the medium. We present results for the in-medium fragmentation, including chemical and kinetic equilibration of the soft fragments and discuss implications of our result to jet quenching physics and the problem of thermalization of the quark-gluon plasma in heavy ion collisions.

Polarization of gravitational waves in symmetric teleparallel theories of gravity and their modifications

Symmetric teleparallel gravity (STG) offers an interesting avenue to formulate a theory of gravitation that relies neither on curvature nor torsion but only on non-metricity Q. Given the growing number of observations of gravitational waves (GWs) and their use to explore gravitational theories, in this work we investigate the GWs in various extensions of STG, focusing on their speed and polarization. For the simple STG, for theories that arise from the generalized irreducible decomposition of STG, and for f(Q) gravity, we obtain the same speed and polarizations with general relativity. For scalar - non-metricity theories, where a scalar field is nonminimally coupled to f(Q), we find that GWs propagate in general with a speed different than the one of light. Finally, for the case of f(Q,B) gravity we find that new polarizations do appear.
