On the Magnetism of C14 Nb(Fe89.4Al10.6)2 Laves Phase Intermetallic Compound

C14 Nb(Fe89.4Al10.6)2 Laves phase intermetallic compound was investigated by DC magnetization (M) measurements performed in the temperature (T) interval of 20 to 175 K,under an applied magnetic field (H) ranging between 50 and 1250 Oe. Magnetization curves were recorded in the field-cooled (FC) and in the zero-field-cooled (ZFC) modes. They clearly showed an irreversible character that vanished at H=1250 Oe. Both magnetization curves exhibited well-defined peaks around T_N =72.3 K whose positions were H-independent, so they were identified as the compound's N\'eel temperature. The existence of irreversibility which decreases with H testify to a re-entrant character of magnetism in the studied compound. An increase of both MFC and MZFC observed below TN likely indicates a mixed i.e. ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic ground magnetic state of the studied system.

Magnetic phase diagram of sigma-phase Fe55Re45 compound in the H-T coordinates

In-field DC and AC magnetization measurements were carried out on a sigma-phase Fe55Re45 intermetallic compound aimed at determination of the magnetic phase diagram in the H-T plane. Field cooled, M_FC, and zero-field cooled, M_ZFC, DC magnetization curves were measured in the magnetic field, H, up to 1200 Oe. AC magnetic susceptibility measurements were carried out at a constant frequency of 1465 Hz under DC fields up to H=500 Oe. The obtained results provide evidences for re-entrant magnetism in the investigated sample. The magnetic phase diagrams in the H-T plane have been outlined based on characteristic temperatures determined from the DC and AC measurements. The phase diagrams are similar yet not identical. The main difference is that in the DC diagram constructed there are two cross-over transitions within the strong-irreversibility spin-glass state, whereas in the AC susceptibility based diagram only one transition is observed. The border lines (irreversibility, cross-over) can be described in terms of the power laws.

Determination of the magnetic phase diagram in the H-T plane for a sigma-phase Fe47Mo53 alloy

Magnetization measurements were carried out in the in field-cooled (FC) and in zero-field-cooled (ZFC) conditions versus temperature, T, and external magnetic field, H, on a sigma-phase Fe47Mo53 compound. Analysis of the measured M_FC and M_ZFC curves yielded values of characteristic temperatures: magnetic ordering (Curie) temperature, T_C, irreversibility temperature, T_ir, temperature of the maximum in M_ZFC, T_m, identified as the N\.eel (T_N) temperature, and cross-over temperature, T_co. Based on these temperatures a magnetic phase diagram in the H-T plane was outlined. The field dependences of the characteristic temperatures viz. of the irreversibility and of the cross-over temperatures were described in terms of a power law with the exponent 0.5(1). In the whole range of H i.e. up to 800 Oe, except the one H>50 Oe, a rare double re-entrant transition viz. PM-FM-AF-SG takes place. For small fields i.e. H<50 Oe a single re-entrant transition viz. PM-FM-SG is revealed.

Annama H chondrite - mineralogy, physical properties, cosmic ray exposure, and parent body history

The fall of the Annama meteorite occurred early morning (local time) on April 19, 2014 on the Kola Peninsula (Russia). Based on mineralogy and physical properties, Annama is a typical H chondrite. It has a high Ar-Ar age of 4.4 Ga. Its cosmic ray exposure history is atypical as it is not part of the large group of H chondrites with a prominent 7 - 8 Ma peak in the exposure age histograms. Instead, its exposure age is within uncertainty of a smaller peak at 30 \pm 4 Ma. The results from short-lived radionuclides are compatible with an atmosperic pre-entry radius of 30 - 40 cm. However, based on noble gas and cosmogenic radionuclide data, Annama must have been part of a larger body (radius >65 cm) for a large part of its cosmic ray exposure history. The 10Be concentration indicates a recent (3 - 5 Ma) breakup which may be responsible for the Annama parent body size reduction to 30 - 35 cm pre-entry radius.

Superconductivity and unusual magnetic behavior in amorphous carbon

Traces of superconductivity (SC) at elevated temperatures (up to 65 K) were observed by magnetic measurements in three different inhomogeneous sulfur doped amorphous carbon (a-C) systems: (a) in commercial and (b) synthesized powders and (c) in a-C thin films. (a) Studies performed on commercial (a-C) powder which contains 0.21% of sulfur, revealed traces of non-percolated superconducting phases below Tc = 65 K. The SC volume fraction is enhanced by the sulfur doping. (b) a-C powder obtained by pyrolytic decomposition of sucrose did not show any sign for SC above 5 K. This powder was mixed with sulfur and synthesized at 400 C (a-CS). The inhomogeneous products obtained, show traces of SC phases at TC= 17 and 42 K. (c) Non-superconducting composite a-C-W thin films were grown by electron-beam induced deposition. SC emerged at Tc = 34.4 K only after heat treatment with sulfur. Other parts of the pyrolytic a-CS powder, show unusual magnetic features. (i) Pronounced irreversible peaks around 55-75 K appear in the first zero-field-cooled (ZFC) sweep only. Their origin is not known. (ii) Unexpectedly these peaks are totally suppressed in the second ZFC runs measured a few minutes later. (iii) Around the peak position the field-cooled (FC) curves cross the ZFC plots (ZFC>FC). These peculiar magnetic observations also ascribed to a-CS powder prepared from the commercial a-C powder and are connected to each other. All SC and magnetic phenomena observed are intrinsic properties of the sulfur doped a-C materials. It is proposed that the a-CS systems behave similarly to well known high TC curates and/or pnictides in which SC emerges from magnetic states.

Magnetization Measurement of a Possible High-Temperature Superconducting State in Amorphous Carbon Doped with Sulfur

Magnetization M(T,H) measurements performed on thoroughly characterized commercial amorphous carbon powder doped with sulfur (AC-S), revealed the occurrence of an inhomogeneous superconductivity (SC) below T_c = 38 K. The constructed magnetic field-temperature (H-T) phase diagram resembles that of type-II superconductors. However, AC-S demonstrates a number of anomalies. In particular, we observed (1) a non-monotonic behavior of the lower critical field H_c1(T); (2) a pronounced positive curvature of the "upper critical field boundary" that we associated with the flux lattice melting line Hm(T); (3) a spontaneous ferromagnetic-like magnetization M0 coexisting with SC. Based on the analysis of experimental results we propose a nonstandard SC state in AC-S.

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy of SmFeAsO0.85: Possible evidence for d-wave order parameter symmetry

We report a scanning tunneling spectroscopy investigation of polycrystalline SmFeAsO0.85 having a superconducting transition at 52 K. On large regions of the sample surface the tunneling spectra exhibited V-shaped gap structures with no coherence peaks, indicating degraded surface properties. In some regions, however, the coherence peaks were clearly observed, and the V-shaped gaps could be fit to the theory of tunneling into a d-wave superconductor, yielding gap values between 8 to 8.5 meV, corresponding to the ratio 2D/KTc ~ 3.55 - 3.8, which is slightly above the BCS weak-coupling prediction. In other regions the spectra exhibited zero-bias conductance peaks, consistent with a d-wave order parameter symmetry.

Magnetic measurements and 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy in oxygen deficient SmFeAsO0.85

Magnetic measurements and 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy studies were performed on oxygen- deficient high temperature superconductor SmFeAsO0.85 with TC=52.4 K. The upper-critical behavior (HC2) values were extracted from the real part of ac measurements. The field dependence of HC2 is consistent with a two band model. Mössbauer spectra below and above TC consist of a singlet and a doublet, which are attributed to Fe ions which have two or one oxygen ions in their close vicinity, respectively. No change is observed in the major (~75%) singlet related to Fe ions surrounded by two oxygen ions. On the other hand, the doublet which senses oxygen vacancies shows a well defined magnetic sextet below TC. This indicates coexistence on a microscopic level of the two mutually exclusive states namely: superconductivity which is confined to the Fe-As layers and magnetism, in the same layers. Alternatively, the hyperfine parameters of the doublet are similar to the reported values of FeAs which orders magnetically at 77 K. Thus the magnetic features observed below TC, may be related to FeAs as an extra phase.

57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy and magnetic measurements of oxygen deficient LaFeAsO

We report on the magnetic behavior of oxygen deficient LaFeAsO1-x (x-0.10) compound, prepared by one-step synthesis, which crystallizes in the tetragonal (S.G. P4/nmm) structure at room temperature. Resistivity measurements show a strong anomaly near 150 K, which is ascribed to the spin density wave (SDW) instability. On the other hand, dc magnetization data shows paramagnetic-like features down to 5 K, with an effective moment of 0.83 mB/Fe. 57Fe Mossbauer studies (MS) have been performed at 95 and 200 K. The spectra at both temperatures are composed of two sub-spectra. At 200 K the major one (88%), is almost a singlet, and corresponds to those Fe nuclei, which have two oxygen ions in their close vicinity. The minor one, with a large quadrupole splitting, corresponds to Fe nuclei, which have vacancies in their immediate neighborhood. The spectrum at 95 K, exhibits a broadened magnetic split major (84%) sub-spectrum and a very small magnetic splitting in the minor subspectrum. The relative intensities of the subspectra facilitate in estimating the actual amount of oxygen vacancies in the compound to be 7.0(5)%, instead of the nominal LaFeAsO0.90. These results, when compared with reported 57Fe MS of non-superconducting LaFeAsO and superconducting LaFeAsO0.9F0.1, confirm that the studied LaFeAsO0.93 is a superconductivity-magnetism crossover compound of the newly discovered Fe based superconducting family.

Penetration of Andreev bound states into the ferromagnet in a SrRuO$_{3}$/(110)YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ bilayer: a scanning tunneling spectroscopy study

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy of thin epitaxial $SrRuO_{3}/(110)YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}$ ferromagnet/superconductor bilayers, reveal a clear penetration of the Andreev bound states into the ferromagnetic layer. The penetration is manifested in the density of states of the ferromagnet as a split zero bias conductance peak with an imbalance between peak heights. Our data indicate that the splitting occurs at the superconductor side as a consequence of induced magnetization, confirming recent theoretical predictions. The imbalance is attributed to the spin polarization in the ferromagnet.

Surface superconducting states in a polycrystalline MgB$_{2}$ sample

We report results of dc magnetic and ac linear low-frequency study of a polycrystalline MgB$_2$ sample. AC susceptibility measurements at low frequencies, performed under dc fields parallel to the sample surface, provide a clear evidence for surface superconducting states in MgB$_2$.

Glass-like low frequency ac response of ZrB$_{12}$ and Nb single crystals in the surface superconducting state

We report experimental studies of the low frequency electrodynamics of ZrB$_{12}$ and Nb single crystals. AC susceptibility at frequencies 3 - 1000 Hz have been measured under a dc magnetic field, $H_0$, applied parallel to the sample surface. In the surface superconducting state, for several $H_0$, the real part of the ac magnetic susceptibility exhibits a logarithmic frequency dependence as for spin-glass systems. Kramers-Kronig analysis of the experimental data, shows large losses at ultra low frequencies ($<3$ Hz). The wave function slope at the surface was found. The linear response of the order parameter to the ac excitation was extracted from the experimental data.

The low-frequency response in the surface superconducting state of ZrB$_{12}$ single crystal}

The large nonlinear response of a single crystal ZrB$_{12}$ to an ac field (frequency 40 - 2500 Hz) for $H_0>H_{c2}$ has been observed. Direct measurements of the ac wave form and the exact numerical solution of the Ginzburg-Landau equations, as well as phenomenological relaxation equation, permit the study of the surface superconducting states dynamics. It is shown, that the low frequency response is defined by transitions between the metastable superconducting states under the action of an ac field. The relaxation rate which determines such transitions dynamics, is found.

The internal magnetic field in superconducting ferromagnets

We have measured the nonlinear response to the ac magnetic field in the superconducting weak ferromagnet Ru-1222, at different regimes of sample cooling which provides unambiguous evidence of the interplay of the domain structure and the vorticity in the superconducting state. This is {\em direct} proof of coexistence of ferromagnetic and superconductive order parameters in high-$T_c$ ruthenocuprates.

Tunneling spectroscopy measurement of the superconductor gap parameter of MgB_2

Cryogenic scanning tunneling microscopy and magnetization measurements were used to study the superconducting properties of MgB_2. The magnetization measurements show a sharp superconductor transition onset at T_c = 38.5 K, in agreement with previous works. The tunneling spectra exhibit BCS gap structures, with gap parameters in the range of 5 to 7 meV, yielding a ratio of 2delat/KT_c ~ 3-4. This suggests that MgB_2 is a conventional BCS (s-wave) superconductor, either in the weak-coupling or in the `intermediate-coupling` regime

Absence of Superconductivity in BeB2

The hexagonal BeB2 compound has been prepared and found to be paramagnetic down to 5 K. The mixed (Mg,Be)B2 system has the same TC =39 K as pure MgB2, indicating that Be does not replace the Mg atoms.
