Long-time behaviour of time-dependent density functional theory

The density functional theory (DFT) is a remarkably successful theory of electronic structure of matter. At the foundation of this theory lies the Kohn-Sham (KS) equation. In this paper, we describe the long-time behaviour of the time-dependent KS equation. Assuming weak self-interactions, we prove global existence and scattering in (almost) the full "short-range" regime. This is achieved with new and simple techniques, naturally compatible with the structure of the DFT and involving commutator vector fields and non-abelian versions of Sobolev-Klainerman-type spaces and inequalities.

Maximal Speed of Quantum Propagation

For Schroedinger equations with both time-independent and time-dependent Kato potentials, we give a simple proof of the maximal speed bound. The latter states that the probability to find the quantum system outside the ball of radius proportional to the time lapsed decays as an inverse power of time. We give an explicit expression for the constant of proportionality in terms of the maximal energy available to the initial condition. For the time-independent part of the interaction, we require neither decay at infinity nor smoothness.

Vortex Lattices and the Bogoliubov-De Gennes Equations

We consider the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations giving an equivalent formulation of the BCS theory of superconductivity. We are interested in static solutions with the magnetic field present. We carefully formulate the equations in the basis independent form, discuss their general features and isolate key physical classes of solutions (normal and vortex lattice states) which are the candidates for the ground state. We prove existence of the normal and vortex lattice states and stability of the normal states for large temperature or magnetic fields and their instability for small temperature and small magnetic fields.

On Derivation of the Poisson-Boltzmann Equation

Starting from the microscopic reduced Hartree-Fock equation, we derive the nanoscopic linearized Poisson-Boltzmann equation for the electrostatic potential associated with the electron density.

Near-Pulse Solutions of the FitzHugh-Nagumo Equations on Cylindrical Surfaces

We introduce a geometrical extension of the FitzHugh-Nagumo equations describing propagation of electrical impulses in nerve axons. In this extension, the axon is modeled as a warped cylinder, rather than a straight line, as is usually done, while pulses propagate on its surface, as is the case with real axons. We prove the stability of electrical impulses for a standard cylinder and existence and stability of pulse-like solutions for warped cylinders whose radii are small and vary slowly along their lengths.

Vortex lattice solutions of the ZHK Chern-Simons equations

We consider the non-relativistic Chern-Simons equations proposed by Zhang, Hansen and Kivelson as the mean field theory of the fractional Hall effect. We prove the existence of the vortex lattice solutions (i.e. solution with lattice symmetry and with topological degree one per lattice cell) similar to the Abrikosov solutions of superconductivity. We derive an asymptotic expression for the energy per unit area and show that it attains minimum at the hexagonal lattice.

On the Bogolubov-de Gennes Equations

We consider the Bogolubov-de Gennes equations giving an equivalent formulation of the BCS theory of superconductivity. We are interested in the case when the magnetic field is present. We (a) discuss their general features, (b) isolate key physical classes of solutions (normal, vortex and vortex lattice states) and (c) prove existence of the normal, vortex and vortex lattice states and stability/instability of the normal states for large/small temperature or/and magnetic fields.

The time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations for Bosons

In this article, we use quasifree reduction to derive the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) equations describing the dynamics of quantum fluctuations around a Bose-Einstein condensate in $\mathbb R^d$. We prove global well-posedness for the HFB equations for sufficiently regular pair interaction potentials, and establish key conservation laws. Moreover, we show that the solutions to the HFB equations exhibit a symplectic structure, and have a form reminiscent of a Hamiltonian system. In particular, this is used to relate the HFB equations to the HFB eigenvalue equations encountered in the physics literature. Furthermore, we construct the Gibbs states at positive temperature associated with the HFB equations, and establish criteria for the emergence of Bose-Einstein condensation.

On the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations

We review some results of our paper arXiv:1602.05171v2 on the "nonlinear quasifree approximation" to the many-body Schrödinger dynamics of Bose gases. In that paper, we derive, with the help of this approximation, the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) equations, providing an approximate description of the dynamics of quantum fluctuations around a Bose-Einstein condensate and study properties of these equations.

On Abrikosov Lattice Solutions of the Ginzburg-Landau Equations

We prove existence of Abrikosov vortex lattice solutions of the Ginzburg-Landau equations of superconductivity, with multiple magnetic flux quanta per a fundamental cell. We also revisit the existence proof for the Abrikosov vortex lattices, streamlining some arguments and providing some essential details missing in earlier proofs for a single magnetic flux quantum per a fundamental cell.

On stability of Abrikosov vortex lattices

The Ginzburg-Landau equations play a key role in superconductivity and particle physics. They inspired many imitations in other areas of physics. These equations have two remarkable classes of solutions -- vortices and (Abrikosov) vortex lattices. For the standard cylindrical geometry, the existence theory for these solutions, as well as the stability theory of vortices are well developed. The latter is done within the context of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations -- the Gorkov-Eliashberg-Schmid equations of superconductivity -- and the abelian Higgs model of particle physics. We study stability of Abrikosov vortex lattices under finite energy perturbations satisfying a natural parity condition (both defined precisely in the text) for the dynamics given by the Gorkov-Eliashberg-Schmid equations. For magnetic fields close to the second critical magnetic field and for arbitrary lattice shapes, we prove that there exist two functions on the space of lattices, such that Abrikosov vortex lattice solutions are asymptotically stable, provided the superconductor is of Type II and these functions are positive, and unstable, for superconductors of Type I, or if one of these functions is negative.

Suppression of Decoherence by Periodic Forcing

We consider a finite-dimensional quantum system coupled to a thermal reservoir and subject to a time-periodic, energy conserving forcing. We show that, if a certain dynamical decoupling condition is fulfilled, then the periodic forcing counteracts the decoherence induced by the reservoir: for small system-reservoir coupling $λ$ and small forcing period $T$, the system dynamics is approximated by an energy conserving and non-dissipative dynamics, which preserves coherences. For times up to order $(λT)^{-1}$, the difference between the true and approximated dynamics is of size $λ+T$. Our approach is rigorous and combines Floquet and spectral deformation theory. We illustrate our results on the spin-fermion model and recover previously known, heuristically obtained results.

Neckpinch dynamics for asymmetric surfaces evolving by mean curvature flow

We study surfaces evolving by mean curvature flow (MCF). For an open set of initial data that are $C^3$-close to round, but without assuming rotational symmetry or positive mean curvature, we show that MCF solutions become singular in finite time by forming neckpinches, and we obtain detailed asymptotics of that singularity formation. Our results show in a precise way that MCF solutions become asymptotically rotationally symmetric near a neckpinch singularity.

Magnetic Vortices, Abrikosov Lattices and Automorphic Functions

We address the macroscopic theory of superconductivity - the Ginzburg-Landau theory. This theory %Macroscopic theory of superconductivity is based on the celebrated Ginzburg - Landau equations. First developed to explain and predict properties of superconductors, these equations form an integral part - Abelean-Higgs component - of the standard model of particle physics and, in general, have a profound influence on physics well beyond their original designation area. %These are a pair of coupled nonlinear equations for a complex function (called order parameter or Higgs field) and a vector field (magnetic potential or gauge field). They are the simplest representatives of a large family of equations appearing in physics and mathematics. (The latest variant of these equations is the Seiberg - Witten equations.)

Hamiltonian dynamics of a particle interacting with a wave field

We study the Hamiltonian equations of motion of a heavy tracer particle interacting with a dense weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensate in the classical (mean-field) limit. Solutions describing ballistic subsonic motion of the particle through the condensate are constructed. We establish asymptotic stability of ballistic subsonic motion.

Effective dynamics of an electron coupled to an external potential in non-relativistic QED

In the framework of non-relativistic QED, we show that the renormalized mass of the electron (after having taken into account radiative corrections) appears as the kinematic mass in its response to an external potential force. Specifically, we study the dynamics of an electron in a slowly varying external potential and with slowly varying initial conditions and prove that, for a long time, it is accurately described by an associated effective dynamics of a Schrödinger electron in the same external potential and for the same initial data, with a kinetic energy operator determined by the renormalized dispersion law of the translation-invariant QED model.

On Rayleigh scattering in non-relativistic quantum electrodynamics

In this note we provide details of the proofs of the main results of our paper [19] to the standard model of non-relativistic quantum electrodynamics in which particles are minimally coupled to the quantized electromagnetic field at energies below the ionization threshold. Recall that in [19] we proved several lower bounds on the growth of the distance of the escaping photons/phonons to the particle system. Using some of these results, we proved asymptotic completeness (for Rayleigh scattering) on the states for which the expectation of the photon/phonon number is bounded uniformly in time. However, we provided details only for the phonon case.
