On exponential separation of analytic self-conformal sets on the real line

In a recent article, Rapaport showed that there is no dimension drop for exponentially separated analytic IFSs on the real line. We show that the set of such exponentially separated IFSs in the space of analytic IFSs contains an open and dense set in the $\mathcal{C}^2$ topology. Moreover, we give a sufficient condition for the IFS to be exponentially separated which allows us to construct explicit examples which are exponentially separated. The key technical tool is the introduction of the \emph{dual IFS} which we believe has significant interest in its own right. As an application we also characterise when an analytic IFS can be conjugated to a self-similar IFS.

Multifractal analysis of Gatzouras--Lalley measures

We study the multifractal analysis of self-affine measures supported on planar carpets of type Gatzouras--Lalley. We work primarily with Olsen's Hausdorff-dimensional variant of the $L^q$ spectrum, which we denote by $\vartheta(q)$. We prove a variational formula for $\vartheta$, from which it follows that multifractal formalism holds at all values $q$ for which $\vartheta(q)$ is differentiable. However, in general, $\vartheta$ need not be differentiable and the multifractal formalism may fail. In fact, the multifractal spectrum may be non-differentiable and have jump discontinuities in the interior of its support, and there may be multiple phase transitions at both negative and positive values of $q$.

Projections of self-affine sets onto lines

We prove an all-directions Marstrand-Mattila projection theorem for self-affine measures and sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Under exponential separation, together with proximality and strong irreducibility assumptions on the linear parts, the projection of a self-affine measure onto every line has the expected Hausdorff dimension. If the proximality assumption is strengthened to strong pinching, then the same conclusion holds for the self-affine set $X$ itself, without any separation assumption. In the plane, strong irreducibility of the linear parts alone suffices, and this is sharp. As a corollary, if $X$ additionally has upper Minkowski dimension at most one, then its Minkowski dimension exists and equals its Hausdorff dimension, giving a partial affirmative answer to the folklore question of whether the Minkowski dimension exists for every self-affine set.

Assouad spectrum of Gatzouras-Lalley carpets

We study the fine local scaling properties of a class of self-affine fractal sets called Gatzouras-Lalley carpets. More precisely, we establish a formula for the Assouad spectrum of all Gatzouras-Lalley carpets as the concave conjugate of an explicit piecewise-analytic function combined with a simple parameter change. Our formula implies a number of novel properties for the Assouad spectrum not previously observed for dynamically invariant sets; in particular, the Assouad spectrum can be a non-trivial differentiable function on the entire domain $(0,1)$ and can be strictly concave on open intervals. Our proof introduces a general framework for covering arguments using techniques developed in the context of multifractal analysis, including the method of types from large deviations theory and Lagrange duality from optimisation theory.

Recent Progress on Fractal Percolation

This is a survey paper about the fractal percolation process, also known as Mandelbrot percolation. It is intended to give a general breadth overview of more recent research in the topic, but also includes some of the more classical results, for example related to the connectivity properties. Particular emphasis is put on the dimension theory of the limiting set and also on the geometry of the non-trivial connected components in the supercritical regime. In particular, we show that both the Assouad spectrum and intermediate dimensions of the non-trivial connected components are constant equal to its box dimension despite its Hausdorff, box and Assouad dimensions known to being distinct.

Intermediate dimensions of Bedford-McMullen carpets with applications to Lipschitz equivalence

Intermediate dimensions were recently introduced to provide a spectrum of dimensions interpolating between Hausdorff and box-counting dimensions for fractals where these differ. In particular, the self-affine Bedford-McMullen carpets are a natural case for investigation, but until now only very rough bounds for their intermediate dimensions have been found. In this paper, we determine a precise formula for the intermediate dimensions $\dim_{\, θ}Λ$ of any Bedford-McMullen carpet $Λ$ for the whole spectrum of $θ\in [0,1]$, in terms of a certain large deviations rate function. The intermediate dimensions exist and are strictly increasing in $θ$, and the function $θ\mapsto \dim_{\, θ}Λ$ exhibits interesting features not witnessed on any previous example, such as having countably many phase transitions, between which it is analytic and strictly concave. We make an unexpected connection to multifractal analysis by showing that two carpets with non-uniform vertical fibres have equal intermediate dimensions if and only if the Hausdorff multifractal spectra of the uniform Bernoulli measures on the two carpets are equal. Since intermediate dimensions are bi-Lipschitz invariant, this shows that the equality of these multifractal spectra is a necessary condition for two such carpets to be Lipschitz equivalent.

The $L^q$ spectrum of self-affine measures on sponges

In this paper a sponge in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is the attractor of an iterated function system consisting of finitely many strictly contracting affine maps whose linear part is a diagonal matrix. A suitable separation condition is introduced under which a variational formula is proved for the $L^q$ spectrum of any self-affine measure defined on a sponge for all $q\in\mathbb{R}$. Apart from some special cases, even the existence of their box dimension was not proved before. Under certain conditions the formula has a closed form which in general is an upper bound. The Frostman and box dimension of these measures is also determined. The approach unifies several existing results and extends them to arbitrary dimensions. The key ingredient is the introduction of a novel pressure function which aims to capture the growth rate of box counting quantities on sponges. We show that this pressure satisfies a variational principle which resembles the Ledrappier--Young formula for Hausdorff dimension.

The Assouad dimension of self-affine measures on sponges

We derive upper and lower bounds for the Assouad and lower dimensions of self-affine measures in $\mathbb{R}^d$ generated by diagonal matrices and satisfying suitable separation conditions. The upper and lower bounds always coincide for $d=2,3$ yielding precise explicit formulae for the dimensions. Moreover, there are easy to check conditions guaranteeing that the bounds coincide for $d \geq 4$. An interesting consequence of our results is that there can be a `dimension gap' for such self-affine constructions, even in the plane. That is, we show that for some self-affine carpets of `Barański type' the Assouad dimension of all associated self-affine measures strictly exceeds the Assouad dimension of the carpet by some fixed $δ>0$ depending only on the carpet. We also provide examples of self-affine carpets of `Barański type' where there is no dimension gap and in fact the Assouad dimension of the carpet is equal to the Assouad dimension of a carefully chosen self-affine measure.

On the convergence rate of the chaos game

This paper studies how long it takes the orbit of the chaos game to reach a certain density inside the attractor of a strictly contracting iterated function system of which we only assume that its lower dimension is positive. We show that the rate of growth of this cover time is determined by the Minkowski dimension of the push-forward of the shift invariant measure with exponential decay of correlations driving the chaos game. Moreover, we bound the expected value of the cover time from above and below with multiplicative logarithmic correction terms. As an application, for Bedford-McMullen carpets we completely characterise the family of probability vectors which minimise the Minkowski dimension of Bernoulli measures. Interestingly, these vectors have not appeared in any other aspect of Bedford-McMullen carpets before.

Calculating box dimension with the method of types

This paper presents a general procedure based on using the method of types to calculate the box dimension of sets. The approach unifies and simplifies multiple box counting arguments. In particular, we use it to generalize the formula for the box dimension of self-affine carpets of Gatzouras-Lalley and of Barański type to their higher dimensional sponge analogues. In addition to a closed form, we also obtain a variational formula which resembles the Ledrappier-Young formula for Hausdorff dimension.

Hausdorff measure and Assouad dimension of generic self-conformal IFS on the line

This paper considers self-conformal iterated function systems (IFSs) on the real line whose first level cylinders overlap. In the space of self-conformal IFSs, we show that generically (in topological sense) if the attractor of such a system has Hausdorff dimension less than $1$ then it has zero appropriate dimensional Hausdorff measure and its Assouad dimension is equal to $1$. Our main contribution is in showing that if the cylinders intersect then the IFS generically does not satisfy the weak separation property and hence, we may apply a recent result of Angelevska, Käenmäki and Troscheit [BLMS, 2020]. This phenomenon holds for transversal families (in particular for the translation family) typically, in the self-similar case, in both topological and in measure theoretical sense, and in the more general self-conformal case in the topological sense.

On the intermediate dimensions of Bedford-McMullen carpets

The intermediate dimensions of a set $Λ$, elsewhere denoted by $\dim_θΛ$, interpolates between its Hausdorff and box dimensions using the parameter $θ\in[0,1]$. Determining a precise formula for $\dim_θΛ$ is particularly challenging when $Λ$ is a Bedford-McMullen carpet with distinct Hausdorff and box dimension. In this direction, answering a question of Fraser, we show that $\dim_θΛ$ is strictly less than the box dimension of $Λ$ for every $θ<1$, moreover, the derivative of the upper bound is strictly positive at $θ=1$. We also improve on the lower bound obtained by Falconer, Fraser and Kempton.

Triangular Gatzouras-Lalley-type planar carpets with overlaps

We construct a family of planar self-affine carpets with overlaps using lower triangular matrices in a way that generalizes the original Gatzouras--Lalley carpets defined by diagonal matrices. Assuming the rectangular open set condition, Barański proved for this construction that for typical parameters, which can be explicitly checked, the inequalities between the Hausdorff, box and affinity dimension of the attractor are strict. We generalize this result to overlapping constructions, where we allow complete columns to be shifted along the horizontal axis or allow parallelograms to overlap within a column in a transversal way. Our main result is to show sufficient conditions under which these overlaps do not cause the drop of the dimension of the attractor. Several examples are provided to illustrate the results, including a self-affine smiley, a family of self-affine continuous curves, examples with overlaps and an application of our results to some three-dimensional systems.

The Prime Grid. Introducing a geometric representation of natural numbers

In this report we present an off-the-number-line representation of the positive integers by expressing each integer by its unique prime signature as a grid point of an infinite dimensional space indexed by the prime numbers, which we term the prime grid. In this space we consider a zigzag line, termed the number trail that starts at the origin (representing 1) and travels through every single grid point in the order of the increasing sequence of the natural numbers. Using the infinity norm we define an arithmetic function $L_\infty (N)$ tabulating the total length of the zigzag up to the integer $N$. We show that $L_\infty(N)$ grows linearly in $N$. Based on computing $L_\infty$ up to $N=10^{12}$ we conjecture the exact rate of growth, which we substantiate analytically by constructing a series of Markov shifts that give gradually better approximations. Our other interest is looking at the prime gaps along $L_\infty$, i.e. the differences $L_\infty (p_{i+1} )-L_\infty (p_i )$ between every two consecutive primes. After some preliminary observations we extend this analysis to second order differences (difference of differences) as well. Based on our computations up to $N=10^{12}$ we conclude that the distribution of prime numbers along the number trail shows a considerably richer structure compared to their distribution on the traditional number line. We also formulate modified versions of the prime number theorem and Polignac's conjecture.

Pointwise regularity of parameterized affine zipper fractal curves

We study the pointwise regularity of zipper fractal curves generated by affine mappings. Under the assumption of dominated splitting of index-1, we calculate the Hausdorff dimension of the level sets of the pointwise Hölder exponent for a subinterval of the spectrum. We give an equivalent characterization for the existence of regular pointwise Hölder exponent for Lebesgue almost every point. In this case, we extend the multifractal analysis to the full spectrum. In particular, our results apply for de Rham's curve.

Conceptual framework for performing simultaneous fold and sequence optimization in multi-scale protein modeling

We present a dual optimization concept of predicting optimal sequences as well as optimal folds of off-lattice protein models in the context of multi-scale modeling. We validate the utility of the recently introduced hidden-force Monte Carlo optimization algorithm by finding significantly lower energy folds for minimalist and detailed protein models than previously reported. Further, we also find the protein sequence that yields the lowest energy fold amongst all sequences for a given chain length and residue mixture. In particular, for protein models with a binary sequence, we show that the sequence-optimized folds form more compact cores than the lowest energy folds of the historically fixed, Fibonacci-series sequences of chain lengths of 13, 21, 34, 55, and 89. We then extend our search algorithm to use UNRES, one of the leading united-residue protein force fields. Our combined fold and sequence optimization on three test proteins reveal an inherent bias in UNRES favoring alpha helical structures even when secondary structure prediction clearly suggests only beta sheets besides random coil, and virtually no helices. One test in particular, a triple-stranded antiparallel beta-sheet protein domain, demonstrates that by permutations of its sequence UNRES re-folds this structure into a perfect alpha helix but, in fact, the helix is just an artefact of the force field, the structure quickly unfolds in all-atom state-of-the-art molecular dynamics simulation.

Degrees and distances in random and evolving Apollonian networks

This paper studies Random and Evolving Apollonian networks (RANs and EANs), in d dimension for any d>=2, i.e. dynamically evolving random d dimensional simplices looked as graphs inside an initial d-dimensional simplex. We determine the limiting degree distribution in RANs and show that it follows a power law tail with exponent tau=(2d-1)/(d-1). We further show that the degree distribution in EANs converges to the same degree distribution if the simplex-occupation parameter in the n-th step of the dynamics is q_n->0 and sum_{n=0}^infty q_n =infty. This result gives a rigorous proof for the conjecture of Zhang et al. that EANs tend to show similar behavior as RANs once the occupation parameter q->0. We also determine the asymptotic behavior of shortest paths in RANs and EANs for arbitrary d dimensions. For RANs we show that the shortest path between two uniformly chosen vertices (typical distance), the flooding time of a uniformly picked vertex and the diameter of the graph after n steps all scale as constant times log n. We determine the constants for all three cases and prove a central limit theorem for the typical distances. We prove a similar CLT for typical distances in EANs.

First Passage Percolation on Inhomogeneous Random Graphs

We investigate first passage percolation on inhomogeneous random graphs. The random graph model G(n,kappa) we study is the model introduced by Bollobás, Janson and Riordan, where each vertex has a type from a type space S and edge probabilities are independent, but depending on the types of the end vertices. Each edge is given an independent exponential weight. We determine the distribution of the weight of the shortest path between uniformly chosen vertices in the giant component and show that the hopcount, i.e. the number of edges on this minimal weight path, properly normalized follows a central limit theorem. We handle the cases where lambda(n)->lambda is finite or infinite, under the assumption that the average number of neighbors lambda(n) of a vertex is independent of the type. The paper is a generalization the paper by Bhamidi, van der Hofstad and Hooghiemstra, where FPP is explored on the Erdos-Renyi graphs.
