Quasi-local spin-angular momentum and the construction of axial vector fields

A novel procedure is presented which allows the construction of all axial vector fields on Riemannian two-spheres. Using these axial vector fields and the centre-of-mass unit sphere reference systems, a constructive definition of quasi-local spin-angular momentum is introduced. Balance relations are also derived, with respect to arbitrary Lie-propagated unit sphere reference systems, to characterize the angular momentum transports in spacetimes without symmetries.

Hyperboloidal initial data without logarithmic singularities

Andersson and Chruściel showed that generic asymptotically hyperboloidal initial data sets admit polyhomogeneous expansions, and that only a non-generic subclass of solutions of the conformal constraint equations is free of logarithmic singularities. The purpose of this work is twofold. First, within the evolutionary framework of the constraint equations, we show that the existence of a well-defined Bondi mass brings the asymptotically hyperboloidal initial data sets into a subclass whose Cauchy development guaranteed to admit a smooth boundary, by virtue of the results of Andersson and Chruściel. Second, by generalizing a recent result of Beyer and Ritchie, we show that the existence of well-defined Bondi mass and angular momentum, together with some mild restrictions on the free data, implies that the generic solutions of the parabolic-hyperbolic form of the constraint equations are completely free of logarithmic singularities. We also provide numerical evidence to show that in the vicinity of Kerr, asymptotically hyperboloidal initial data without logarithmic singularities can indeed be constructed.

Symmetries of vacuum spacetimes with a compact Cauchy horizon of constant non-zero surface gravity

We prove that any smooth vacuum spacetime containing a compact Cauchy horizon with surface gravity that can be normalised to a non-zero constant admits a Killing vector field. This proves a conjecture by Moncrief and Isenberg from 1983 under the assumption on the surface gravity and generalises previous results due to Moncrief-Isenberg and Friedrich-Rácz-Wald, where the generators of the Cauchy horizon were closed or densely filled a 2-torus. Consequently, the maximal globally hyperbolic vacuum development of generic initial data cannot be extended across a compact Cauchy horizon with surface gravity that can be normalised to a non-zero constant. Our result supports, thereby, the validity of the strong cosmic censorship conjecture in the considered special case. The proof consists of two main steps. First, we show that the Killing equation can be solved up to infinite order at the Cauchy horizon. Second, by applying a recent result of the first author on wave equations with initial data on a compact Cauchy horizon, we show that this Killing vector field extends to the globally hyperbolic region.

Is it possible to construct asymptotically flat initial data using the evolutionary forms of the constraints?

Near-Kerr black hole initial datasets are constructed by applying either the parabolic-hyperbolic or the algebraic-hyperbolic form of the constraints. In both cases, strongly and weakly asymptotically flat initial datasets with desirable falloff rates are produced by controlling only the monopole part of one of the freely specifiable variables. The viability of the applied method is verified by numerically integrating the evolutionary forms of the constraint equations in the case of various near-Kerr configurations.

Spacetime singularities and curvature blow-ups

The singularity theorems of Penrose, Hawking, and Geroch predict the existence of incomplete inextendible causal geodesics in a wide range of physically adequate spacetimes modeling the gravitational collapse of stars and the expanding universe. Here, using results on spacetime extensions, it is shown that if a suitable low regular form of the strong cosmic censor hypothesis holds, then parallelly propagated blow-up of either the tidal force or frame-drag part of the curvature must occur in ``generic'' timelike geodesically incomplete maximal Cauchy developments.

On the construction of Riemannian three-spaces with smooth inverse mean curvature foliation

Consider a one-parameter family of smooth Riemannian metrics on a two-sphere, $\mathscr{S}$. By choosing a one-parameter family of smooth lapse and shift, these Riemannian two-spheres can always be assembled into smooth Riemannian three-space, with metric $h_{ij}$ on a three-manifold $Σ$ foliated by a one-parameter family of two-spheres $\mathscr{S}_ρ$. It is shown first that we can always choose the shift such that the $\mathscr{S}_ρ$ surfaces form a smooth inverse mean curvature foliation of $Σ$. An integrodifferential expression, referring only to the area of the level sets and the lapse function, is also derived that can be used to quantify the Geroch mass. If the constructed Riemannian three-space happens to be asymptotically flat and the $ρ$-integral of the integrodifferential expression is non-negative, then not only the positive mass theorem but, if one of the $\mathscr{S}_ρ$ level sets is a minimal surface, the Penrose inequality also holds. Notably, neither of the above results requires the scalar curvature of the constructed three-metric to be non-negative.

Black hole initial data by numerical integration of the parabolic-hyperbolic form of the constraints

The parabolic-hyperbolic form of the constraints is integrated numerically. The applied numerical stencil is $4^{th}$ order accurate (in the spatial directions) while 'time'-integration is made by using the method of lines with a $4^{th}$ order accurate Runge-Kutta scheme. The proper implementation of the applied numerical method is verified by convergence tests and monitoring the relative and absolute errors determined by comparing numerical and analytically known solutions of the constraints involving boosted and spinning vacuum single black hole configurations. The main part of our investigations is, however, centered on construction of initial data for distorted black holes which, in certain cases, have non-negligible gravitational wave content. Remarkably the applied new method is unprecedented in that it allows to construct initial data for highly boosted and spinning black holes, essentially for the full physical allowed ranges of these parameters. In addition, the use of the evolutionary form of the constraints is free from applying any sort of boundary conditions in the strong field regime.

Can we prescribe the physical parameters of multiple black holes?

The parabolic-hyperbolic form of the constraints and superposed Kerr-Schild black holes have already been used to provide a radically new initialization of binary black hole configurations. The method generalizes straightforwardly to multiple black hole systems. This paper is to verify that each of the global Arnowitt-Deser-Misner quantities of the constructed multiple black hole initial data can always be prescribed, as desired, in advance of solving the constraints. These global charges are shown to be uniquely determined by the physical parameters of the involved individual Kerr-Schild black holes.

Numerical investigation of the dynamics of linear spin $s$ fields on a Kerr background II: Superradiant scattering

Superradiant scattering of linear spin $s=0,\pm 1,\pm 2$ fields on Kerr black hole background is investigated in the time domain by integrating numerically the homogeneous Teukolsky master equation. The applied numerical setup has already been used in studying long time evolution and tail behavior of electromagnetic and metric perturbations on rotating black hole background [arXiv:1905.09082v3]. To have a clear setup the initial data is chosen to be of the compact support, while to optimize superradiance the frequency of the initial data is fine tuned. Our most important finding is that the rate of superradiance strongly depends on the relative position of the (compact) support of the initial data and the ergoregion. When they are well-separated then only a modest -- in case of $s=0$ scalar fields negligible -- superradiance occurs, whereas it can get to be amplified significantly whenever the support of the initial data and the ergoregion overlap.

Petrov type D equation on horizons of nontrivial bundle topology

We consider $3$-dimensional isolated horizons (IHs) generated by null curves that form nontrivial $U(1)$ bundles. We find a natural interplay between the IH geometry and the $U(1)$-bundle geometry. In this context we consider the Petrov type D equation introduced and studied in previous works \cite{DLP1,DLP2,LS,DKLS1}. From the $4$-dimensional spacetime point of view, solutions to that equation define isolated horizons embeddable in vacuum spacetimes (with cosmological constant) as Killing horizons to the second order such that the spacetime Weyl tensor at the horizon is of the Petrov type D. From the point of view of the $U(1)$-bundle structure, the equation couples a $U(1)$-connection, a metric tensor defined on the base manifold and the surface gravity in a very nontrivial way. We focus on the $U(1)$-bundles over $2$-dimensional manifolds diffeomorphic to $2$-sphere. We have derived all the axisymmetric solutions to the Petrov type D equation. For a fixed value of the cosmological constant they set a $3$-dimensional family as one could expect. A surprising result is, that generically our horizons are not embeddable in the known exact solutions to Einstein's equations. It means that among the exact type D spacetimes there exists a new family of spacetimes that generalize the properties of the Kerr- (anti) de Sitter black holes on one hand and the Taub-NUT spacetimes on the other hand.

Numerical investigations of the asymptotics of solutions to the evolutionary form of the constraints

Systematic numerical investigations of the asymptotics of near Schwarzschild vacuum initial data sets is carried out by inspecting solutions to the parabolic-hyperbolic and to the algebraic-hyperbolic forms of the constraints, respectively. One of our most important findings is that the concept of near Schwarzschild configurations, applied previously in [4, 5], is far too restrictive. It is demonstrated that by relaxing the conditions on the freely specifiable part of the data a more appropriate notion of near Schwarzschild initial data configurations can be defined which allows us to generate asymptotically flat initial data configurations.

Numerical investigation of the dynamics of linear spin $s$ fields on Kerr background I. Late time tails of spin $s = \pm 1, \pm 2$ fields

The time evolution of linear fields of spin $s = \pm 1$ and $s = \pm 2$ on Kerr black hole spacetimes are investigated by solving the homogeneous Teukolsky equation numerically. The applied numerical setup is based on a combination of conformal compactification and the hyperbolic initial value problem. The evolved basic variables are expanded in terms of spin-weighted spherical harmonics which allows us to evaluate all the angular derivatives analytically, whereas the evolution of the expansion coefficients, in the time-radial section, is determined by applying the method of lines implemented in a fourth order accurate finite differencing stencil. Concerning the initialization, in all of our investigations single mode excitations---either static or purely dynamical type initial data---are applied. Within this setup the late time tail behavior is investigated. Due to the applied conformal compactification the asymptotic decay rates are determined at three characteristic locations---in the domain of outer communication, at the event horizon and at future null infinity---simultaneously. Recently introduced new type of `energy' and `angular momentum' balance relations are also applied in order to demonstrate the feasibility and robustness of the developed numerical schema, and also to verify the proper implementation of the underlying mathematical model.

On the evolutionary form of the constraints in electrodynamics

The constraint equations in Maxwell theory are investigated. In analogy with some recent results on the constraints of general relativity it is shown, regardless of the signature and dimension of the ambient space, that the "divergence of a vector field" type constraints can always be put into linear first order hyperbolic form for which global existence and uniqueness of solutions to an initial-boundary value problem is guaranteed.

Toward computing gravitational initial data without elliptic solvers

Two new methods have been proposed for solving the gravitational constraints without using elliptic solvers by formulating them as either an algebraic-hyperbolic or parabolic-hyperbolic system. Here, we compare these two methods and present a unified computational infrastructure for their implementation as numerical evolution codes. An important potential application of these methods is the prescription of initial data for the simulation of black holes. This paper is meant to support progress and activity in that direction.

A simple method of constructing binary black hole initial data

By applying a parabolic-hyperbolic formulation of the constraints and superposing Kerr-Schild black holes, a simple method is introduced to initialize time evolution of binary systems. As the input parameters are essentially the same as those used in the post-Newtonian (PN) setup the proposed method interrelates various physical expressions applied in PN and in fully relativistic formulations. The global ADM charges are also determined by the input parameters, and no use of boundary conditions in the strong field regime is made.

On solving the constraints by integrating a strongly hyperbolic system

It was shown recently that the constraints on the initial data for Einstein's equations may be posed as an evolutionary problem [9]. In one of the proposed two methods the constraints can be replaced by a first order symmetrizable hyperbolic system and a subsidiary algebraic relation. Here, by assuming that the initial data surface is smoothly foliated by a one-parameter family of topological two-spheres, the basic variables are recast in terms of spin-weighted fields. This allows one to replace all the angular derivatives in the evolutionary system by the Newman-Penrose $ð$ and $\barð$ operators which, in turn, opens up a new avenue to solve the constraints by integrating the resulting system using suitable numerical schemes. In particular, by replacing the $ð$ and $\barð$ operators either by a finite difference or by a pseudo-spectral representation or by applying a spectral decomposition in terms of spin-weighted spherical harmonics, the evolutionary equations may be put into the form of a coupled system of non-linear ordinary differential equations.

Constraints as evolutionary systems

The constraint equations for smooth $[n+1]$-dimensional (with $n\geq 3$) Riemannian or Lorentzian spaces satisfying the Einstein field equations are considered. It is shown, regardless of the signature of the primary space, that the constraints can be put into the form of an evolutionary system comprised either by a first order symmetric hyperbolic system and a parabolic equation or, alternatively, by a symmetrizable hyperbolic system and a subsidiary algebraic relation. In both cases the (local) existence and uniqueness of solutions are also discussed.

Black hole initial data without elliptic equations

We explore whether a new method to solve the constraints of Einstein's equations, which does not involve elliptic equations, can be applied to provide initial data for black holes. We show that this method can be successfully applied to a nonlinear perturbation of a Schwarzschild black hole by establishing the well-posedness of the resulting constraint problem. We discuss its possible generalization to the boosted, spinning multiple black hole problem.
