An Eclipse-Ballooning Study of Shadow Bands During the April 2024 Total Eclipse

In this study we searched for shadow bands associated with the total solar eclipse of April 8, 2024. Our aim was to improve our understanding of their origin. Shadow bands are debated to arise either from atmospheric turbulence within Earth's planetary boundary layer (PBL) or from a diffraction-interference effect occurring above the atmosphere. To test these theories, high altitude balloons (HABs) equipped with light sensors, similar ground light sensors, radiosondes launched with weather balloons, and an aircraft-mounted light sensor were deployed. Our team was located in Concan, TX, except for the plane which flew to NE Vermont to find clear weather. Unlike Pitt's 2017 HAB study, which detected a 4.5 Hz signal attributed to shadow bands above the PBL and on the ground, no shadow bands were detected above the PBL in Texas or in northeast Vermont, despite the use of improved instrumentation. Cloud cover prevented useful ground based measurements in Texas, limiting our conclusions about the nature of shadow bands. These findings suggest that shadow bands may not always be present or, if they are, may be primarily due to atmospheric turbulence. The results of this study and Pitt's 2017 study emphasize the need for future work.

Front-end electronic readout system for the Belle II imaging Time-Of-Propagation detector

The Time-Of-Propagation detector is a Cherenkov particle identification detector based on quartz radiator bars for the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider. The purpose of the detector is to identify the type of charged hadrons produced in electron-positron collisions, and requires a single photon timing resolution below 100 picoseconds. A novel front-end electronic system was designed, built, and integrated to acquire data from the 8192 microchannel plate photomultiplier tube channels in the detector. Waveform sampling of these analog signals is done by switched-capacitor array application-specific integrated circuits. The processes of triggering, digitization of windows of interest, readout, and data transfer to the Belle II data acquisition system are managed by Xilinx Zynq-7000 programmable system on a chip devices.

First Observation of Accelerator Muon Antineutrinos in MINOS

We report the first direct observation of muon antineutrinos in the MINOS Far Detector in the current muon-neutrino dominated beam. The magnetic field of the detector is utilized to separate muon neutrinos and antineutrinos event-by-event by identifying the charge sign of the muon created in charged-current interactions. We present preliminary results on the muon antineutrino oscillation parameters as well as limit on the fraction of neutrinos that disappear and reappear as antineutrinos. We also discuss the prospect of the measurement when the polarity of the magnetic focusing horns will be reversed to create a dedicated muon antineutrino beam.

Recent charm results from CLEO-c

The CLEO-c experiment has been collecting data at the charm-threshold region. A selection of recent results on charmed meson and charmonia decays are presented.

Measurement of B(D+ -> mu+ nu) and the pseudoscalar decay constant f_D at CLEO

The analysis of 60 1/pb data collected on the psi(3770) resonance with the CLEO-c detector has produced the first statistically significant signal for D+ -> mu+ nu decay and led to the measurement of the decay branching fraction B(D+ -> mu+ nu) = (3.5 +- 1.4 +- 0.6) x 10-4 and the pseudoscalar decay constant f_D = (202 +- 41 +- 17) MeV.

Measurement of B(Y(nS) -> mu+ mu-) at CLEO

The decay branching fractions of the three narrow Upsilon resonances to mu+ mu- have been measured by analyzing about 4.3 1/fb e+e- data collected with the CLEO III detector. The branching fraction B(Y(1S) -> mu+ mu-) = (2.49 +- 0.02 +- 0.07)% is consistent with the current world average but B(Y(2S) -> mu+ mu-) = (2.03 +- 0.03 +- 0.08)% and B(Y(3S) -> mu+ mu-) = (2.39 +- 0.07 +- 0.10)% are significantly larger than prior results. These new muonic branching fractions imply a narrower total decay width for the Y(2S) and Y(3S) resonances and lower other branching fractions that rely on these decays in their determination.
