Architecture of nanoscale ferroelectric domains in GaMo4S8

Local-probe imaging of the ferroelectric domain structure and auxiliary bulk pyroelectric measurements were conducted at low temperatures with the aim to clarify the essential aspects of the orbitally driven phase transition in GaMo4S8, a lacunar spinel crystal that can be viewed as a spin-hole analogue of its GaV4S8 counterpart. We employed multiple scanning probe techniques combined with symmetry and mechanical compatibility analysis to uncover the hierarchical domain structures, developing on the 10-100 nm scale. The identified domain architecture involves a plethora of ferroelectric domain boundaries and junctions, including primary and secondary domain walls in both electrically neutral and charged configurations, and topological line defects transforming neutral secondary walls into two oppositely charged ones.

The Magnetoelastic Distortion of Multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ in the Canted Antiferromagnetic State

Using THz spectroscopy, we show that the spin-wave spectrum of multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ in its high-field canted antiferromagnetic state is well described by a spin model that violates rhombohedral symmetry. We demonstrate that the monoclinic distortion of the canted antiferromagnetic state is induced by the single-ion magnetoelastic coupling between the lattice and the two nearly anti-parallel spins. The revised spin model for BiFeO$_3$ contains two new single-ion anisotropy terms that violate rhombohedral symmetry and depend on the direction of the magnetic field.

Field and anisotropy driven transformations of spin spirals in cubic skyrmion hosts

We discuss distinctive features of spiral states in bulk chiral magnets such as MnSi and Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ that stem from the effect of the cubic magneto-crystalline anisotropy. First of all, at both the helical-to-conical and the conical-to-ferromagnetic transitions, taking place at H$_{c1}$ and H$_{c2}$, respectively, the cubic anisotropy leads to reversible or irreversible jump-like reorientations of the spiral wavevectors. The subtle interplay between the easy and hard anisotropy axes gives rise to a phase transition between elliptically distorted conical states almost without any detectable change in the period. We show that the competition between on-site cubic and exchange anisotropy terms can also lead to oblique spiral states. Our work gives clear directions for further experimental studies to reveal theoretically predicted spiral states in cubic helimagnets beyond the aforementioned well-established states thus, can help to understand the magnetic phase diagram of these archetypal skyrmion hosts. In addition, we show that properties of isolated skyrmions such as inter-skyrmion attraction, orientation and/or nucleation are also rooted in the properties of host spirals states, in which skyrmions are stabilized.
