Robust LassoNet: Enhancing Feature Selection in Neural Networks via Robust Loss Functions

Feature selection in neural networks remains a challenging problem, particularly in the presence of noisy or contaminated data. LassoNet is a recent approach that addresses this issue by combining neural networks with hierarchical sparsity constraints, enabling simultaneous prediction and variable selection. However, its standard formulation relies on the mean squared error (MSE) loss, which is known to be highly sensitive to outliers. In this paper, we present Robust LassoNet, an extension of LassoNet that incorporates robust loss functions, such as Huber, Cauchy, Tukey's bisquare, and Nonnegative Garrote, to mitigate the effect of extreme observations. The proposed approach preserves the original optimization framework while improving stability under data contamination. Through experiments on synthetic and real datasets, we show that robust LassoNet significantly improves both predictive performance and feature selection accuracy in the presence of outliers or heavy tailed noise, while maintaining comparable performance in clean settings. These results highlight the importance of robustness in neural network based feature selection and suggest practical guidelines for choosing appropriate loss functions.

A network-constrain Weibull AFT model for biomarkers discovery

We propose AFTNet, a novel network-constraint survival analysis method based on the Weibull accelerated failure time (AFT) model solved by a penalized likelihood approach for variable selection and estimation. When using the log-linear representation, the inference problem becomes a structured sparse regression problem for which we explicitly incorporate the correlation patterns among predictors using a double penalty that promotes both sparsity and grouping effect. Moreover, we establish the theoretical consistency for the AFTNet estimator and present an efficient iterative computational algorithm based on the proximal gradient descent method. Finally, we evaluate AFTNet performance both on synthetic and real data examples.

ROBustness In Network (robin): an R package for Comparison and Validation of communities

In network analysis, many community detection algorithms have been developed, however, their implementation leaves unaddressed the question of the statistical validation of the results. Here we present robin(ROBustness In Network), an R package to assess the robustness of the community structure of a network found by one or more methods to give indications about their reliability. The procedure initially detects if the community structure found by a set of algorithms is statistically significant and then compares two selected detection algorithms on the same graph to choose the one that better fits the network of interest. We demonstrate the use of our package on the American College Football benchmark dataset.

Simultaneous nonparametric regression in RADWT dictionaries

A new technique for nonparametric regression of multichannel signals is presented. The technique is based on the use of the Rational-Dilation Wavelet Transform (RADWT), equipped with a tunable Q-factor able to provide sparse representations of functions with different oscillations persistence. In particular, two different frames are obtained by two RADWT with different Q-factors that give sparse representations of functions with low and high resonance. It is assumed that the signals are measured simultaneously on several independent channels and that they share the low resonance component and the spectral characteristics of the high resonance component. Then, a regression analysis is performed by means of the grouped lasso penalty. Furthermore, a result of asymptotic optimality of the estimator is presented using reasonable assumptions and exploiting recent results on group-lasso like procedures. Numerical experiments show the performance of the proposed method in different synthetic scenarios as well as in a real case example for the analysis and joint detection of sleep spindles and K-complex events for multiple electroencephalogram (EEG) signals.
