In this paper we prove that the tree property can hold on regular cardinals in an interval which overlaps a strong limit cardinal. This is a crucial milestone in the long term project, tracing back to a question raised by Foreman and Magidor in the 1980s, of obtaining the tree property at every regular cardinal above the first uncountable cardinal.
Hjorth proved from $ZF + AD + DC$ that there is no sequence of distinct $\Sigma^1_2$ sets of length $\delta^1_2$. Sargsyan extended Hjorth's technique to show there is no sequence of distinct $\Sigma^1_{2n}$ sets of length $\delta^1_{2n}$. Sargsyan conjectured an analogous property is true for any regular Suslin pointclass in $L(R)$ -- i.e. if $\kappa$ is a regular Suslin cardinal in $L(R)$, then there is no sequence of distinct $\kappa$-Suslin sets of length $\kappa^+$ in $L(R)$. We prove this in the case that the pointclass $S(\kappa)$ is inductive-like.
We show that the Abraham-Rubin-Shelah Open Coloring Axiom is consistent with a large continuum, in particular, consistent with $2^{\aleph_0}=\aleph_3$. This answers one of the main open questions from the 1985 paper of Abraham-Rubin-Shelah. As in their paper, we need to construct names for so-called preassignments of colors in order to add the necessary homogeneous sets. However, these names are constructed over models satisfying the CH. In order to address this difficulty, we show how to construct such names with very strong symmetry conditions. This symmetry allows us to combine them in many different ways, using a new type of poset called a Partition Product, and thereby obtain a model of this axiom in which $2^{\aleph_0}=\aleph_3$.
We prove some iteration theorems for a certain class of $\kappa^+$-cc forcing posets.
Answering a question of Sakai, we show that the existence of an $\omega_1$-Erd\H{o}s cardinal suffices to obtain the consistency of Chang's Conjecture with $\square_{\omega_1, 2}$. By a result of Donder this is best possible. We also give an answer to another question of Sakai relating to the incompatibility of $\square_{\lambda, 2}$ and $(\lambda^+, \lambda) \twoheadrightarrow (\kappa^+, \kappa)$ for uncountable $\kappa$.
A subset of a topological space is said to be \emph{universally measurable} if it is measured by the completion of each countably additive $σ$-finite Borel measure on the space, and \emph{universally null} if it has measure zero for each such atomless measure. In 1908, Hausdorff proved that there exist universally null sets of real numbers of cardinality $\aleph_{1}$, and thus that there exist at least $2^{\aleph_{1}}$ such sets. Laver showed in the 1970's that consistently there are just continuum many universally null sets of reals. The question of whether there exist more than continuum many universally measurable sets of reals was asked by Mauldin in 1978. We show that consistently there exist only continuum many universally measurable sets. This result also follows from work of Ciesielski and Pawlikowski on the iterated Sacks model. In the models we consider (forcing extensions by suitably-sized random algebras) every set of reals is universally measurable if and only if it and its complement are unions of ground model continuum many Borel sets.
We present two ways in which the model $L({\mathbb R})$ is canonical assuming the existence of large cardinals. We show that the theory of this model, with {\em ordinal} parameters, cannot be changed by small forcing; we show further that a set of ordinals in $V$ cannot be added to $L({\mathbb R})$ by small forcing. The large cardinal needed corresponds to the consistency strength of $AD^{L({\mathbb R})}$; roughly $ω$ Woodin cardinals.
