Metric characterization of connectedness for topological spaces

Connectedness, path connectedness, and uniform connectedness are well-known concepts. In the traditional presentation of these concepts there is a substantial difference between connectedness and the other two notions, namely connectedness is defined as the absence of disconnectedness, while path connectedness and uniform connectedness are defined in terms of connecting paths and connecting chains, respectively. In compact metric spaces uniform connectedness and connectedness are well-known to coincide, thus the apparent conceptual difference between the two notions disappears. Connectedness in topological spaces can also be defined in terms of chains governed by open coverings in a manner that is more reminiscent of path connectedness. We present a unifying metric formalism for connectedness, which encompasses both connectedness of topological spaces and uniform connectedness of uniform spaces, and which further extends to a hierarchy of notions of connectedness.

The reals as rational Cauchy filters

We present a detailed and elementary construction of the real numbers from the rational numbers a la Bourbaki. The real numbers are defined to be the set of all minimal Cauchy filters in $\mathbb{Q}$ (where the Cauchy condition is defined in terms of the absolute value function on $\mathbb{Q}$) and are proven directly, without employing any of the techniques of uniform spaces, to form a complete ordered field. The construction can be seen as a variant of Bachmann's construction by means of nested rational intervals, allowing for a canonical choice of representatives.

An ordered framework for partial multivalued functors

The category Rel of sets and relations intimately ties the notions of function, partial multivalued function, and direct image under a function through the description of Rel as the Kleisli category of the covariant power set functor on Set. We present a suitable framework to obtain a similar relationship between the concepts of functor, partial multivalued functor, and the direct image under a functor.

The real numbers - a survey of constructions

We present a comprehensive survey of constructions of the real numbers (from either the rationals or the integers) in a unified fashion, thus providing an overview of most (if not all) known constructions ranging from the earliest attempts to recent results, and allowing for a simple comparison-at-a-glance between different constructions.

Metric axioms: a structural study

For a fixed set $X$, an arbitrary \textit{weight structure} $d \in [0,\infty]^{X \times X}$ can be interpreted as a distance assignment between pairs of points on $X$. Restrictions (i.e. \textit{metric axioms}) on the behaviour of any such $d$ naturally arise, such as separation, triangle inequality and symmetry. We present an order-theoretic investigation of various collections of weight structures, as naturally occurring subsets of $[0,\infty]^{X \times X}$ satisfying certain metric axioms. Furthermore, we exploit the categorical notion of adjunctions when investigating connections between the above collections of weight structures. As a corollary, we present several lattice-embeddability theorems on a well-known collection of weight structures on $X$.

A folk Quillen model structure for operads

We establish, by elementary means, the existence of a cofibrantly generated monoidal model structure on the category of operads. By slicing over a suitable operad the classical Rezk model structure on the category of small categories is recovered.

A note on the metrizability of spaces

With the blessing of hind sight we consider the problem of metrizability and show that the classical Bing-Nagata-Smirnov Theorem and a more recent result of Flagg give complementary answers to the metrization problem, that are in a sense dual to each other.

Metric 1-spaces

A generalization of metric space is presented which is shown to admit a theory strongly related to that of ordinary metric spaces. To avoid the topological effects related to dropping any of the axioms of metric space, first a new, and equivalent, axiomatization of metric space is given which is then generalized from a fresh point of view. Naturally arising examples from metric geometry are presented.

Broad posets, trees, and the dendroidal category

An extension of order theory is presented that serves as a formalism for the study of dendroidal sets analogously to way the formalism of order theory is used in the study of simplicial sets.

From Operads to Dendroidal Sets

Dendroidal sets offer a formalism for the study of $\infty$-operads akin to the formalism of $\infty$-categories by means of simplicial sets. We present here an account of the current state of the theory while placing it in the context of the ideas that lead to the conception of dendroidal sets. We briefly illustrate how the added flexibility embodied in $\infty$-operads can be used in the study of $A_{\infty}$-spaces and weak $n$-categories in a way that cannot be realized using strict operads.

Dold-Kan correspondence for dendroidal abelian groups

We prove a Dold-Kan type correspondence between the category of dendroidal abelian groups and a suitably constructed category of dendroidal complexes. Our result naturally extends the classical Dold-Kan correspondence between the category of simplicial abelian groups and the category of non-negatively graded chain complexes.

On inner Kan complexes in the category of dendroidal sets

The category of dendroidal sets is an extension of that of simplicial sets, suitable for defining nerves of operads rather than just of categories. In this paper, we prove some basic properties of inner Kan complexes in the category of dendroidal sets. In particular, we extend fundamental results of Boardman and Vogt, of Cordier and Porter, and of Joyal to dendroidal sets.

Dendroidal Sets

We introduce the concept of a dendroidal set. This is a generalization of the notion of a simplicial set, specially suited to the study of operads in the context of homotopy theory. We define a category of trees, which extends the category $Δ$ used in simplicial sets, whose presheaf category is the category of dendroidal sets. We show that there is a closed monoidal structure on dendroidal sets which is closely related to the Boardman-Vogt tensor product of operads. Furthermore we show that each operad in a suitable model category has a coherent homotopy nerve which is a dendroidal set, extending another construction of Boardman and Vogt. There is also a notion of an inner Kan dendroidal set which is closely related to simplicial Kan complexes. Finally, we briefly indicate the theory of dendroidal objects and outline several of the applications and further theory of dendroidal sets.
