Geodesically Complete Universe

This talk is about solving cosmological equations analytically without approximations, and discovering new phenomena that could not be noticed with approximate solutions. We found all the solutions of the Friedmann equations for a specific model, including all the zero-size-bounce solutions that do not violate the null energy condition, as well as all the finite-size-bounce solutions, and then discovered model independent phenomena. Among them is the notion of geodesic completeness for the geometry of the universe. From this we learned a few new general lessons for cosmology. Among them is that anisotropy provides a model independent attractor mechanism to some specific initial values for cosmological fields, and that there is a period of antigravity in the history of the universe. The results are obtained only at the classical gravity level. Effects of quantum gravity or string theory are unknown, they are not even formulated, so there are new theoretical challenges.

Geodesically Complete Analytic Solutions for a Cyclic Universe

We present analytic solutions to a class of cosmological models described by a canonical scalar field minimally coupled to gravity and experiencing self interactions through a hyperbolic potential. Using models and methods inspired by 2T-physics, we show how analytic solutions can be obtained in flat/open/closed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universes. Among the analytic solutions, there are many interesting geodesically complete cyclic solutions in which the universe bounces at either zero or finite sizes. When geodesic completeness is imposed, it restricts models and their parameters to a certain parameter subspace, including some quantization conditions on initial conditions in the case of zero-size bounces, but no conditions on initial conditions for the case of finite-size bounces. We will explain the theoretical origin of our model from the point of view of 2T-gravity as well as from the point of view of the colliding branes scenario in the context of M-theory. We will indicate how to associate solutions of the quantum Wheeler-deWitt equation with our classical analytic solutions, mention some physical aspects of the cyclic solutions, and outline future directions.

The Big Bang and Inflation United by an Analytic Solution

Exact analytic solutions for a class of scalar-tensor gravity theories with a hyperbolic scalar potential are presented. Using an exact solution we have successfully constructed a model of inflation that produces the spectral index, the running of the spectral index and the amplitude of scalar perturbations within the constraints given by the WMAP 7 years data. The model simultaneously describes the Big Bang and inflation connected by a specific time delay between them so that these two events are regarded as dependent on each other. In solving the Fridemann equations, we have utilized an essential Weyl symmetry of our theory in 3+1 dimensions which is a predicted remaining symmetry of 2T-physics field theory in 4+2 dimensions. This led to a new method of obtaining analytic solutions in 1T field theory which could in principle be used to solve more complicated theories with more scalar fields. Some additional distinguishing properties of the solution includes the fact that there are early periods of time when the slow roll approximation is not valid. Furthermore, the inflaton does not decrease monotonically with time, rather it oscillates around the potential minimum while settling down, unlike the slow roll approximation. While the model we used for illustration purposes is realistic in most respects, it lacks a mechanism for stopping inflation. The technique of obtaining analytic solutions opens a new window for studying inflation, and other applications, more precisely than using approximations.

Super Yang-Mills theory in 10+2 dimensions, The 2T-physics Source for N=4 SYM and M(atrix) Theory

In this paper we construct super Yang-Mills theory in 10+2 dimensions, a number of dimensions that was not reached before in a unitary supersymmetric field theory, and show that this is the 2T-physics source of some cherished lower dimensional field theories. The much studied conformally exact N=4 Super Yang-Mills field theory in 3+1 dimensions is known to be a compactified version of N=1 SYM in 9+1 dimensions, while M(atrix) theory is obtained by compactifications of the 9+1 theory to 0 dimensions (also 0+1 and others). We show that there is a deeper origin of these theories in two higher dimensions as they emerge from the new theory with two times. Pursuing various alternatives of gauge choices, solving kinematic equations and/or dimensional reductions of the 10+2 theory, we suggest a web of connections that include those mentioned above and a host of new theories that relate 2T-physics and 1T-physics field theories, all of which have the 10+2 theory as the parent. In addition to establishing the higher spacetime underpinnings of these theories, a side benefit could be that in principle our approach can be used to develop new computational techniques.

Constraints on Interacting Scalars in 2T Field Theory and No Scale Models in 1T Field Theory

In this paper I determine the general form of the physical and mathematical restrictions that arise on the interactions of gravity and scalar fields in the 2T field theory setting, in d+2 dimensions, as well as in the emerging shadows in d dimensions. These constraints on scalar fields follow from an underlying Sp(2,R) gauge symmetry in phase space. Determining these general constraints provides a basis for the construction of 2T supergravity, as well as physical applications in 1T-field theory, that are discussed briefly here, and more detail elsewhere. In particular, no scale models that lead to a vanishing cosmological constant at the classical level emerge naturally in this setting.

Hunting for TeV Scale Strings at the LHC

In this paper I review the possibility of TeV scale strings that may be detectable by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This possibility was investigated extensively in a series of phenomenological papers during 1984-1985 in connection with the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC). The work was mainly based on a model independent systematic parametrization of scattering amplitudes and cross sections, for Standard Model particles, quarks and leptons, that were assumed to behave like strings, while gluons, photons, $W^{\pm},Z$ were taken as elementary. By using Veneziano type beta functions consistent with crossing symmetry, duality and Regge behavior, bosonic or fermionic resonances in each channel were included, while the low energy behavior was matched to effective field theory non-renormalizable interactions consistent with the Standard Model SU(3)xSU(2)xU(1) gauge symmetry as well as global flavor and family symmetries. The motivation for this approach at that time was the possible compositeness of quarks and leptons but the same phenomenological approach would apply effectively with the modern additional motivations for TeV scale strings, such as the hypothesis of D-branes with large extra dimensions. Because some of the main theoretical and phenomenological work of that time appeared only in the 1984 Snowmass and other proceedings, the results of the investigations have been inaccessible to most researchers and consequently have been largely forgotten. Meanwhile similar approaches are being explored by other researchers. Given the renewed interest in the old results, the purpose of the current paper is to make them readily available.

Gauge Symmetry in Phase Space, Consequences for Physics and Spacetime

Position and momentum enter at the same level of importance in the formulation of classical or quantum mechanics. This is reflected in the invariance of Poisson brackets or quantum commutators under canonical transformations, which I regard as a global symmetry. A gauge symmetry can be defined in phase space (X,P) that imposes equivalence of momentum and position for every motion at every instant of the worldline. One of the consequences of this gauge symmetry is a new formulation of physics in spacetime. Instead of one time there must be two, while phenomena described by one-time physics in 3+1 dimensions appear as various shadows of the same phenomena that occur in 4+2 dimensions with one extra space and one extra time dimensions (more generally, d+2). The 2T-physics formulation leads to a unification of 1T-physics systems not suspected before and there are new correct predictions from 2T-physics that 1T-physics is unable to make on its own systematically. Additional data related to the predictions, that provides information about the properties of the extra 1-space and extra 1-time dimensions, can be gathered by observers stuck in 3+1 dimensions. This is the probe for investigating indirectly the extra 1+1 dimensions which are neither small nor hidden. This 2T formalism that originated in 1998 has been extended in recent years from the worldline to field theory in d+2 dimensions. This includes 2T field theories that yield 1T field theories for the Standard Model and General Relativity as shadows of their counterparts in 4+2 dimensions. Problems of ghosts and causality in a 2T space-time are resolved automatically by the gauge symmetry, while a higher unification of 1T field theories is obtained. In this lecture the approach will be described at an elementary worldline level, and the current status of 2T-physics will be summarized.

Geometry and Symmetry Structures in 2T Gravity

2T-gravity in d+2 dimensions predicts 1T General Relativity (GR) in d dimensions, augmented with a local scale symmetry known as the Weyl symmetry in 1T field theory. The emerging GR comes with a number of constraints, particularly on scalar fields and their interactions in 1T field theory. These constraints, detailed in this paper, are footprints of 2T-gravity and could be a basis for testing 2T-physics. Some of the conceptually interesting consequences of the "accidental" Weyl symmetry include that the gravitational constant emerges from vacuum values of the dilaton and other Higgs-type scalars and that it changes after every cosmic phase transition (inflation, grand unification, electroweak phase transition, etc.). We show that this consequential Weyl symmetry in d dimensions originates from coordinate reparametrization, not from scale transformations, in the d+2 spacetime of 2T-gravity. To recognize this structure we develop in detail the geometrical structures, curvatures, symmetries, etc. of the d+2 spacetime which is restricted by a homothety condition derived from the action of 2T-gravity. Observers that live in d dimensions perceive GR and all degrees of freedom as shadows of their counterparts in d+2 dimensions. Kaluza-Klein (KK) type modes are removed by gauge symmetries and constraints that follow from the 2T-gravity action. However some analogs to KK modes, which we call "prolongations" of the shadows into the higher dimensions, remain but they are completely determined, up to gauge freedom, by the shadows in d dimensions.

Relativistic Harmonic Oscillator Revisited

The familiar Fock space commonly used to describe the relativistic harmonic oscillator, for example as part of string theory, is insufficient to describe all the states of the relativistic oscillator. We find that there are three different vacua leading to three disconnected Fock sectors, all constructed with the same creation-annihilation operators. These have different spacetime geometric properties as well as different algebraic symmetry properties or different quantum numbers. Two of these Fock spaces include negative norm ghosts (as in string theory) while the third one is completely free of ghosts. We discuss a gauge symmetry in a worldline theory approach that supplies appropriate constraints to remove all the ghosts from all Fock sectors of the single oscillator. The resulting ghost free quantum spectrum in d+1 dimensions is then classified in unitary representations of the Lorentz group SO(d,1). Moreover all states of the single oscillator put together make up a single infinite dimensional unitary representation of a hidden global symmetry SU(d,1), whose Casimir eigenvalues are computed. Possible applications of these new results in string theory and other areas of physics and mathematics are briefly mentioned.

N=2,4 Supersymmetric Gauge Field Theory in 2T-physics

In the context of Two Time Physics in 4+2 dimensions we construct the most general N=2,4 supersymmetric Yang Mills gauge theories for any gauge group G. This builds on our previous work for N=1 supersymmetry. The action, the conserved SUSY currents, and the off-shell SU(N) covariant SUSY transformation laws are presented for both N=2 and N=4. The on-shell SUSY transformations close to the supergroup SU(2,2$|$N) with N=1,2,4. The SU(2,2)=SO(4,2) sub-symmetry is realized linearly on 4+2 dimensional flat spacetime. All fields, including vectors and spinors, are in 4+2 dimensions. The extra gauge symmetries in 2T field theory, together with the kinematic constraints that follow from the action, remove all the ghosts to give a unitary theory. By choosing gauges and solving the kinematic equations, the 2T field theory in 4+2 flat spacetime can be reduced to various shadows in various 3+1 dimensional (generally curved) spacetimes. These shadows are related to each other by dualities. The conformal shadows of our theories in flat 3+1 dimensions coincide with the well known counterpart N=1,2,4 supersymmetric massless renormalizable field theories in 3+1 dimensions. It is expected that our more symmetric new structures in 4+2 spacetime may be useful for non-perturbative or exact solutions of these theories.

Gravity in 2T-Physics

The field theoretic action for gravitational interactions in d+2 dimensions is constructed in the formalism of 2T-physics. General Relativity in d dimensions emerges as a shadow of this theory with one less time and one less space dimensions. The gravitational constant turns out to be a shadow of a dilaton field in d+2 dimensions that appears as a constant to observers stuck in d dimensions. If elementary scalar fields play a role in the fundamental theory (such as Higgs fields in the Standard Model coupled to gravity), then their shadows in d dimensions must necessarily be conformal scalars. This has the physical consequence that the gravitational constant changes at each phase transition (inflation, grand unification, electro-weak, etc.), implying interesting new scenarios in cosmological applications. The fundamental action for pure gravity, which includes the spacetime metric, the dilaton and an additional auxiliary scalar field all in d+2 dimensions with two times, has a mix of gauge symmetries to produce appropriate constraints that remove all ghosts or redundant degrees of freedom. The action produces on-shell classical field equations of motion in d+2 dimensions, with enough constraints for the theory to be in agreement with classical General Relativity in d dimensions. Therefore this action describes the correct classical gravitational physics directly in d+2 dimensions. Taken together with previous similar work on the Standard Model of particles and forces, the present paper shows that 2T-physics is a general consistent framework for a physical theory.

Dualities among 1T-Field Theories with Spin, Emerging from a Unifying 2T-Field Theory

The relation between two time physics (2T-physics) and the ordinary one time formulation of physics (1T-physics) is similar to the relation between a 3-dimensional object moving in a room and its multiple shadows moving on walls when projected from different perspectives. The multiple shadows as seen by observers stuck on the wall are analogous to the effects of the 2T-universe as experienced in ordinary 1T spacetime. In this paper we develop some of the quantitative aspects of this 2T to 1T relationship in the context of field theory. We discuss 2T field theory in d+2 dimensions and its shadows in the form of 1T field theories when the theory contains Klein-Gordon, Dirac and Yang-Mills fields, such as the Standard Model of particles and forces. We show that the shadow 1T field theories must have hidden relations among themselves. These relations take the form of dualities and hidden spacetime symmetries. A subset of the shadows are 1T field theories in different gravitational backgrounds (different space-times) such as the flat Minkowski spacetime, the Robertson-Walker expanding universe, AdS(d-k) x S(k) and others, including singular ones. We explicitly construct the duality transformations among this conformally flat subset, and build the generators of their hidden SO(d,2) symmetry. The existence of such hidden relations among 1T field theories, which can be tested by both theory and experiment in 1T-physics, is part of the evidence for the underlying d+2 dimensional spacetime and the unifying 2T-physics structure.

Dual Field Theories In (d-1)+1 Emergent Spacetimes From A Unifying Field Theory In d+2 Spacetime

According to Two-Time Physics, there is more to space-time than can be garnered with the ordinary formulation of physics. Two-Time Physics has shown that the Standard Model of Particles and Forces is successfully reproduced by a two-time field theory in 4 space and 2 time dimensions projected as a holographic image on an emergent spacetime in 3+1 dimensions. Among the successes of this approach is the resolution of the strong CP problem of QCD as an outcome of the restrictions imposed by the higher symmetry structures in 4+2 dimensions. In this paper we launch a program to construct the duals of the Standard Model as other holographic images of the same 4+2 dimensional theory on a variety of emergent spacetimes in 3+1 dimensions. These dual field theories are obtained as a family of gauge choices in the master 4+2 field theory. In the present paper we deal with some of the simpler gauge choices which lead to interacting Klein-Gordon field theories for the conformal scalar with a predicted SO(d,2) symmetry in a variety of interesting curved spacetimes in (d-1)+1 dimensions. More challenging and more interesting gauge choices (including some that relate to mass) which are left to future work are also outlined. Through this approach we discover a new realm of previously unexplored dualities and hidden symmetries that exist both in the macroscopic and microscopic worlds, at the classical and quantum levels. Such phenomena predicted by 2T-physics can in principle be confirmed both by theory and experiment. 1T-physics can be used to analyze the predictions but in most instances gives no clue that the predicted phenomena exist in the first place. This point of view suggests a new paradigm for the construction of a fundamental theory that is likely to impact on the quest for unification.

Generalized Twistor Transform And Dualities, With A New Description of Particles With Spin, Beyond Free and Massless

A generalized twistor transform for spinning particles in 3+1 dimensions is constructed that beautifully unifies many types of spinning systems by mapping them to the same twistor, thus predicting an infinite set of duality relations among spinning systems with different Hamiltonians. Usual 1T-physics is not equipped to explain the duality relationships and unification between these systems. We use 2T-physics in 4+2 dimensions to uncover new properties of twistors, and expect that our approach will prove to be useful for practical applications as well as for a deeper understanding of fundamental physics. Unexpected structures for a new description of spinning particles emerge. A unifying symmetry SU(2,3) that includes conformal symmetry SU(2,2)=SO(4,2) in the massless case, turns out to be a fundamental property underlying the dualities of a large set of spinning systems, including those that occur in high spin theories. This may lead to new forms of string theory backgrounds as well as to new methods for studying various corners of M theory. In this paper we present the main concepts, and in a companion paper we give other details.

Supersymmetric Field Theory in 2T-physics

We construct N=1 supersymmetry in 4+2 dimensions compatible with the theoretical framework of 2T physics field theory and its gauge symmetries. The fields are arranged into 4+2 dimensional chiral and vector supermultiplets, and their interactions are uniquely fixed by SUSY and 2T-physics gauge symmetries. Many 3+1 spacetimes emerge from 4+2 by gauge fixing. Gauge degrees of freedom are eliminated as one comes down from 4+2 to 3+1 dimensions without any remnants of Kaluza-Klein modes. In a special gauge, the remaining physical degrees of freedom, and their interactions, coincide with ordinary N=1 supersymmetric field theory in 3+1 dimensions. In this gauge, SUSY in 4+2 is interpreted as superconformal symmetry SU(2,2|1) in 3+1 dimensions. Furthermore, the underlying 4+2 structure imposes some interesting restrictions on the emergent 3+1 SUSY field theory, which could be considered as part of the predictions of 2T-physics. One of these is the absence of the troublesome renormalizable CP violating F*F terms. This is good for curing the strong CP violation problem of QCD. An additional feature is that the superpotential is required to have no dimensionful parameters. To induce phase transitions, such as SUSY or electro-weak symmetry breaking, a coupling to the dilaton is needed. This suggests a common origin of phase transitions that is driven by the vacuum value of the dilaton, and need to be understood in a cosmological scenario as part of a unified theory that includes the coupling of supergravity to matter. Another interesting aspect is the possibility to utilize the inherent 2T gauge symmetry to explore dual versions of the N=1 theory in 3+1 dimensions. This is expected to reveal non-perturbative aspects of ordinary 1T field theory.

Field Theory in 2T-physics with N=1 Supersymmetry

We construct N=1 supersymmetric field theory in 4+2 dimensions compatible with the theoretical framework of 2T physics and its gauge symmetries. The fields are arranged into 4+2 dimensional chiral and vector supermultiplets, and their interactions are uniquely fixed by SUSY and 2T-physics gauge symmetries. In a particular gauge the 4+2 theory reduces to ordinary supersymmetric field theory in 3+1 dimensions without any Kaluza-Klein remnants, but with some additional constraints in 3+1 dimensions of interesting phenomenological relevance. This construction is another significant step in the development of 2T-physics as a structure that stands above 1T-physics.

The Standard Model as a 2T-physics Theory

New developments in 2T-physics, that connect 2T-physics field theory directly to the real world, are reported in this talk. An action is proposed in field theory in 4+2 dimensions which correctly reproduces the Standard Model (SM) in 3+1 dimensions (and no junk). Everything that is known to work in the SM still works in the emergent 3+1 theory, but some of the problems of the SM get resolved. The resolution is due to new restrictions on interactions inherited from 4+2 dimensions that lead to some interesting physics and new points of view not discussed before in 3+1 dimensions. In particular the strong CP violation problem is resolved without an axion, and the electro-weak symmetry breakdown that generates masses requires the participation of the dilaton, thus relating the electro-weak phase transition to other phase transitions (such as evolution of the universe, vacuum selection in string theory, etc.) that also require the participation of the dilaton. The underlying principle of 2T-physics is the local symmetry Sp(2,R) under which position and momentum become indistinguishable at any instant. This principle inevitably leads to deep consequences, one of which is the two-time structure of spacetime in which ordinary 1-time spacetime is embedded. The proposed action for the Standard Model in 4+2 dimensions follows from new gauge symmetries in field theory related to the fundamental principles of Sp(2,R). These gauge symmetries thin out the degrees of freedom from 4+2 to 3+1 dimensions without any Kaluza-Klein modes.

The Standard Model of Particles and Forces in the Framework of 2T-physics

In this paper it will be shown that the Standard Model in 3+1 dimensions is a gauge fixed version of a 2T-physics field theory in 4+2 dimensions, thus establishing that 2T-physics provides a correct description of Nature from the point of view of 4+2 dimensions. The 2T formulation leads to phenomenological consequences of considerable significance. In particular, the higher structure in 4+2 dimensions prevents the problematic F*F term in QCD. This resolves the strong CP problem without a need for the Peccei-Quinn symmetry or the corresponding elusive axion. Mass generation with the Higgs mechanism is less straightforward in the new formulation of the Standard Model, but its resolution leads to an appealing deeper physical basis for mass, coupled with phenomena that could be measurable. In addition, there are some brand new mechanisms of mass generation related to the higher dimensions that deserve further study. The technical progress is based on the construction of a new field theoretic version of 2T-physics including interactions in an action formalism in d+2 dimensions. The action is invariant under a new type of gauge symmetry which we call 2Tgauge-symmetry in field theory. This opens the way for investigations of the Standard Model directly in 4+2 dimensions, or from the point of view of various embeddings of 3+1 dimensions, by using the duality, holography, symmetry and unifying features of 2T-physics.
