Experiments at the CERN SPS: first signals of deconfinement

Heavy-ion experiments at the CERN SPS began in the mid-1980s to study nuclear matter at extreme temperatures and densities. The program started with light ions, such as oxygen and sulphur, at energies of 60A GeV and 200A GeV, later advancing to lead ions at 158A GeV. A series of experiments, employing novel detector technologies, explored various signatures of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) formation. In February 2000, these results led CERN to announce evidence for the QGP formation. Subsequently, an energy scan was conducted with lead ions from 20A GeV to 158A GeV, to locate the threshold of QGP creation.

The quarkonium saga in heavy ion collisions

J/psi suppression was proposed more than 25 years ago as an unambiguous signature for the formation of the Quark Gluon Plasma in relativistic heavy ion collisions. After intensive efforts, both experimental and theoretical, the quarkonium saga remains exciting, producing surprising results and not fully understood. This talk focuses on recent results on quarkonium production at RHIC and the LHC.

The Strongly Interacting Quark Gluon Plasma at RHIC and LHC

The study of heavy-ion collisions has currently unprecedented opportunities with two first class facilities, the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at BNL and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, and five large experiments ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, PHENIX and STAR producing a wealth of high quality data. Selected results recently obtained are presented on the study of flow, energy loss and direct photons.

Photons and low-mass dileptons: results from PHENIX

Most recent PHENIX results on electromagnetic probes are presented including first preliminary results obtained with the Hadron Blind Detector (HBD) on e+e- invariant mass spectra from Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV.

From RHIC to LHC: First Lessons

The first heavy-ion run at the LHC with Pb+Pb collisions at roots_NN = 2.76 TeV took place in the fall of 2010. In a short and relatively low luminosity run, the three detectors, ALICE, ATLAS and CMS showcased an impressive performance and produced a wealth of a high quality results. This article compares the new LHC results with those accumulated over the last decade at RHIC, focussing on the quantitative and qualitative differences between the different energy regimes of these two facilities.

Electromagnetic Probes

A review is presented of dilepton and real photon measurements in relativistic heavy ion collisions over a very broad energy range from the low energies of the BEVALAC up to the highest energies available at RHIC. The dileptons cover the invariant mass range \mll = 0 - 2.5 GeV/c$^2$, i.e. the continuum at low and intermediate masses and the light vector mesons, $ρ, ω, ϕ$. The review includes also measurements of the light vector mesons in elementary reactions.

Probing dense and hot matter with low-mass dileptons and photons

Results on low-mass dileptons, covering the very broad energy range from the BEVALAC up to SPS are reviewed. The emphasis is on the open questions raised by the intriguing results obtained so far and the prospects for addressing them in the near future with the second generation of experiments, in particular HADES, NA60 and PHENIX.

Searching for Quark Matter with Dileptons and Photons: from SPS to RHIC

The heavy-ion programme at the CERN SPS, which started back in '86, has produced a wealth of very interesting and intriguing results in the quest for the quark-gluon plasma. The highlights of the programme on dilepton and direct photon measurements are reviewed emphasizing the most recent results obtained in Pb-Pb collisions at 158 A GeV. Prospects from RHIC are discussed.
