Basilic: An end-to-end pipeline for Bayesian burst inference and model classification in gravitational-wave data

We present Basilic, a dedicated pipeline for Bayesian model selection and parameter estimation of short-duration gravitational-wave burst signals observable with ground-based detectors. Built on top of the bilby framework, Basilic combines modularity, pre-implemented burst models, and HTCondor integration to enable rapid, user-friendly analyses with minimal technical overhead. This work outlines the design philosophy, operational flow, and a set of example use cases demonstrating its scientific potential. As a case study, we also undertake an in-depth exploration of the comparison between a binary black hole merger and a cosmic string signal, through a parameter space exploration injection campaign. In addition to the well-known high-mass binary black-hole signal morphology degeneracy with cosmic string-like signals, we find that high anti-aligned component spins, even at moderate mass, can result in a similar degeneracy. Motivated by the likely low-SNR expected regime of possible future detections, we propose a data-driven study of model degeneracy, to be employed in the event of an inconclusive Bayes factor.

GW231123: Binary Black Hole Merger or Cosmic String?

The LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA Collaboration recently reported an exceptional gravitational-wave event, GW231123. This gravitational-wave signal was assumed to be generated from the merger of a binary black hole system, with source frame masses of $137^{+22}_{-17}~\textup{M}_\odot$ and $103^{+20}_{-52}~ \textup{M}_\odot$ (90\% credible intervals). As seen by the two LIGO detectors, the signal has only $\sim 5$ cycles, between 30 and 80 Hz, over $\sim 10$ ms. It is of critical importance to confirm the origin of this signal. Here we present the results of a Bayesian model comparison to test whether the gravitational-wave signal was actually generated by a binary black hole merger, or emitted from cusps or kinks on a cosmic string. We find significant evidence for a binary black hole merger origin of the signal.

Direct nonparametric multimessenger constraints on the equation of state of cold dense nuclear matter

We utilize the now substantial amount of astrophysical observations of neutron stars (NSs), along with perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) calculations at high density, to directly constrain the NS equation of state (EOS). To this end, we construct nonparametric EOS priors by using Gaussian processes trained on 75 EOSs, which include models with either hadrons, hyperons, or quarks at high densities. We create a prior using the full EOS sample (model agnostic), and one prior for each EOS family to test model discrimination. We introduce a novel inference approach, which allows the simultaneous sampling of intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of binary NS mergers, as well as a nonparametric equation of state. We showcase this method in a Bayesian updating scheme by first performing a complete analysis of the binary NS merger event GW170817 with minimal assumptions, and sequentially adding information from x-ray and radio NS observations, along with pQCD calculations. Besides providing standard constraints, such as the pressure at twice nuclear saturation density $p(2\rho_\text{sat})=4.3^{+0.6}_{-0.6}\,\times 10^{34}\text{dyne/cm}^{2}$, at $95\%$ confidence level, for the model agnostic prior, our methodology shows how the choice of EOS families used in conditioning changes the inferred astrophysical properties of the EOS, namely tidal deformability and maximum supported NS mass. We find hyperonic priors predicting higher tidal deformabilities for a $1.4M_\odot$ NS, and hadronic priors being preferred by the considered astrophysical data.
