On symmetric and twisted-unitary modular units in group rings

We study units in group rings of the Hantzsche-Wendt group. We construct a compatible system of non-trivial unitary units over $\mathbb Z/2^n\mathbb Z$ for every $n\ge1$, and ``almost-group'' units over $\mathbb Z/2\mathbb Z$, meaning non-trivial units $u$ with the property that $u-g=u^{-1}-g^{-1}$ for some group element $g$.

AI co-mathematician: Accelerating mathematicians with agentic AI

We introduce the AI co-mathematician, a workbench for mathematicians to interactively leverage AI agents to pursue open-ended research. The AI co-mathematician is optimized to provide holistic support for the exploratory and iterative reality of mathematical workflows, including ideation, literature search, computational exploration, theorem proving and theory building. By providing an asynchronous, stateful workspace that manages uncertainty, refines user intent, tracks failed hypotheses, and outputs native mathematical artifacts, the system mirrors human collaborative workflows. In early tests, the AI co-mathematician helped researchers solve open problems, identify new research directions, and uncover overlooked literature references. Besides demonstrating a highly interactive paradigm for AI-assisted mathematical discovery, the AI co-mathematician also achieves state of the art results on hard problem-solving benchmarks, including scoring 48% on FrontierMath Tier 4, a new high score among all AI systems evaluated.

Mitigating LLM Hallucinations via Conformal Abstention

We develop a principled procedure for determining when a large language model (LLM) should abstain from responding (e.g., by saying "I don't know") in a general domain, instead of resorting to possibly "hallucinating" a non-sensical or incorrect answer. Building on earlier approaches that use self-consistency as a more reliable measure of model confidence, we propose using the LLM itself to self-evaluate the similarity between each of its sampled responses for a given query. We then further leverage conformal prediction techniques to develop an abstention procedure that benefits from rigorous theoretical guarantees on the hallucination rate (error rate). Experimentally, our resulting conformal abstention method reliably bounds the hallucination rate on various closed-book, open-domain generative question answering datasets, while also maintaining a significantly less conservative abstention rate on a dataset with long responses (Temporal Sequences) compared to baselines using log-probability scores to quantify uncertainty, while achieveing comparable performance on a dataset with short answers (TriviaQA). To evaluate the experiments automatically, one needs to determine if two responses are equivalent given a question. Following standard practice, we use a thresholded similarity function to determine if two responses match, but also provide a method for calibrating the threshold based on conformal prediction, with theoretical guarantees on the accuracy of the match prediction, which might be of independent interest.

Irreducible representations of the group of unipotent matrices of order $4$ over integers

We study a coarse moduli space of irreducible representations of the group of unipotent matrices of order $\mathbb{4}$ over the ring of integers which have finite weight. All such representations are known to be monomial. To describe a coarse moduli space of such representations, we need to study pairs of subgroups and their characters, which induce non-isomorphic irreducible representations. We obtain a full classification of such pairs and, respectively, a coarse moduli space.

Harmonic Spheres in the Hilbert-Schmidt Grassmannian

We give the twistor description of harmonic maps of the Riemann sphere into the Hilbert-Schmidt Grassmannian. The study of such maps is motivated by the harmonic spheres conjecture formulated in the beginning of this paper.

Irreducible representations of finitely generated nilpotent groups

We prove that irreducible complex representations of finitely generated nilpotent groups are monomial if and only if they have finite weight, which was conjectured by Parshin. Note that we consider (possibly, infinite-dimensional) representations without any topological structure. Besides, we prove that for certain induced representations, irreducibility is implied by Schur irreducibility. Both results are obtained in a more general form for representations over an arbitrary field.
