Unitary quantum conformal Bondi-Metzner-Sachs field theories

We impose unitarity constraints on two-dimensional field theories whose symmetries form the quantum conformal Bondi-Metzner-Sachs algebra, which combines conformal symmetries with asymptotic symmetries of asymptotically flat spacetimes. Positivity constraints put bounds on the central charge, 0<c<2.053. Positivity of the associated vertex algebra allows only four central charges, c = 1, 3/2, 13/7, 2. Thus, only four candidates for unitary field theories remain. We calculate their spectra of primaries and show that they are compatible with BPS-like and holographic inequalities.

Casimir Effect and Gravitational Balance: a Search for Stable Configurations

In this study, we examine the role of the repulsive Casimir force in counteracting the gravitational contraction of a thin spherically symmetric shell. Our main focus is to explore the possibility of achieving a stable balanced configuration within the theoretically reliable weak field limit. To this end, we consider different types of Casimir forces, including those generated by massless scalar fields, massive scalar fields, electromagnetic fields, and temperature-dependent fields.

Enhanced Conformal $BMS_3$ Symmetries

An enhanced version of the conformal BMS$_{3}$ algebra is presented. It is shown to emerge from the asymptotic structure of an extension of conformal gravity in 3D by Pope and Townsend that consistently accommodates an additional spin-2 field, once it is endowed with a suitable set of boundary conditions. The canonical generators of the asymptotic symmetries then span a precise nonlinear W$_{(2,2,2,2,1,1,1)}$ algebra, whose central extensions and coefficients of the nonlinear terms are completely determined by the central charge of the Virasoro subalgebra. The wedge algebra corresponds to the conformal group in four dimensions $SO(4,2)$ and therefore, enhanced conformal BMS$_{3}$ can also be regarded as an infinite-dimensional nonlinear extension of the AdS$_{5}$ algebra with nontrivial central extensions. It is worth mentioning that our boundary conditions might be considered as a starting point in order to consistently incorporate either a finite or an infinite number of conformal higher spin fields.

New Conformal Higher Spin Gravities in $3d$

We propose a new class of conformal higher spin gravities in three dimensions, which extends the one by Pope and Townsend. The main new feature is that there are infinitely many examples of the new theories with a finite number of higher spin fields, much as in the massless case. The action has the Chern-Simons form for a higher spin extension of the conformal algebra. In general, the new theories contain Fradkin-Tseytlin fields with higher derivatives in the gauge transformations, which is reminiscent of partially-massless fields. A relation of the old and new theories to the parity anomaly is pointed out.

Canonical charges and asymptotic symmetry algebra of conformal gravity

We study canonical conformal gravity in four dimensions and construct the gauge generators and the associated charges. Using slightly generalized boundary conditions compared to those in \cite{Grumiller:2013mxa} we find that the charges associated with space-time diffeomorphisms are finite and conserved in time. They are also shown to agree with the Noether charges found in \cite{Grumiller:2013mxa}. However, there exists no charge associated with Weyl transformations. Consequently the asymptotic symmetry algebra is isomorphic to the Lie algebra of the boundary condition preserving diffeomorphisms. For illustrative purposes we apply the results to the Mannheim--Kazanas--Riegert solution of conformal gravity.
