Tits-type alternative for certain groups acting on algebraic surfaces

A theorem of Cantat and Urech says that an analog of the classical Tits alternative holds for the group of birational automorphisms of a compact complex Kaehler surface. We established in our previous paper the following Tits-type alternative: if X is a toric affine variety and G is a subgroup of Aut(X) generated by a finite set of unipotent subgroups normalized by the acting torus then either G contains a nonabelian free subgroup or G is a unipotent affine algebraic group. In the present paper we extend the latter result to any group G of automorphisms of a complex affine surface generated by a finite collection of unipotent algebraic subgroups. It occurs that either G contains a nonabelian free subgroup or G is a metabelian unipotent algebraic group.

Equivariant completions of affine spaces

We survey recent results on open embeddings of the affine space $\mathbb{C}^n$ into a complete algebraic variety $X$ such that the action of the vector group $\mathbb{G}_a^n$ on $\mathbb{C}^n$ by translations extends to an action of $\mathbb{G}_a^n$ on $X$. We begin with Hassett-Tschinkel correspondence describing equivariant embeddings of $\mathbb{C}^n$ into projective spaces and give its generalization for embeddings into projective hypersurfaces. Further sections deal with embeddings into flag varieties and their degenerations, complete toric varieties, and Fano varieties of certain types.

Homogeneous algebraic varieties and transitivity degree

Let $X$ be an algebraic variety such that the group $\text{Aut}(X)$ acts on $X$ transitively. We define the transitivity degree of $X$ as a maximal number $m$ such that the action of $\text{Aut}(X)$ on $X$ is $m$-transitive. If the action of $\text{Aut}(X)$ is $m$-transitive for all $m$, the transitivity degree is infinite. We compute the transitivity degree for all quasi-affine toric varieties and for many homogeneous spaces of algebraic groups. Also we discuss a conjecture and open questions related to this invariant.

Root subgroups on affine spherical varieties

Given a connected reductive algebraic group $G$ and a Borel subgroup $B \subseteq G$, we study $B$-normalized one-parameter additive group actions on affine spherical $G$-varieties. We establish basic properties of such actions and their weights and discuss many examples exhibiting various features. We propose a construction of such actions that generalizes the well-known construction of normalized one-parameter additive group actions on affine toric varieties. Using this construction, for every affine horospherical $G$-variety $X$ we obtain a complete description of all $G$-normalized one-parameter additive group actions on $X$ and show that the open $G$-orbit in $X$ can be connected with every $G$-stable prime divisor via a suitable choice of a $B$-normalized one-parameter additive group action. Finally, when $G$ is of semisimple rank $1$, we obtain a complete description of all $B$-normalized one-parameter additive group actions on affine spherical $G$-varieties having an open orbit of a maximal torus $T \subseteq B$.

Limit points and additive group actions

We show that an effective action of the one-dimensional torus $\mathbb{G}_m$ on a normal affine algebraic variety $X$ can be extended to an effective action of a semi-direct product $\mathbb{G}_m\rightthreetimes\mathbb{G}_a$ with the same general orbit closures if and only if there is a divisor $D$ on $X$ that consists of $\mathbb{G}_m$-fixed points. This result is applied to the study of orbits of the automorphism group $\text{Aut}(X)$ on $X$.

Lie algebras of vertical derivations on semiaffine varieties with torus actions

Let X be a normal variety endowed with an algebraic torus action. An additive group action $α$ on X is called vertical if a general orbit of $α$ is contained in the closure of an orbit of the torus action and the image of the torus normalizes the image of $α$ in Aut(X). Our first result in this paper is a classification of vertical additive group actions on X under the assumption that X is proper over an affine variety. Then we establish a criterion as to when the infinitesimal generators of a finite collection of additive group actions on X generate a finite-dimensional Lie algebra inside the Lie algebra of derivations of X.

Commutative algebraic monoid structures on affine spaces

We study commutative associative polynomial operations $\mathbb{A}^n\times\mathbb{A}^n\to\mathbb{A}^n$ with unit on the affine space $\mathbb{A}^n$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. A classification of such operations is obtained up to dimension 3. Several series of operations are constructed in arbitrary dimension. Also we explore a connection between commutative algebraic monoids on affine spaces and additive actions on toric varieties.

Log terminal singularities, platonic tuples and iteration of Cox rings

Looking at the well understood case of log terminal surface singularities, one observes that each of them is the quotient of a factorial one by a finite solvable group. The derived series of this group reflects an iteration of Cox rings of surface singularities. We extend this picture to log terminal singularities in any dimension coming with a torus action of complexity one. In this setting, the previously finite groups become solvable torus extensions. As explicit examples, we investigate compound du Val threefold singularities. We give a complete classification and exhibit all the possible chains of iterated Cox rings.

Prehomogeneous modules of commutative linear algebraic groups

Let $A$ be a finite dimensional commutative associative algebra with unit over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. The group $G(A)$ of invertible elements is open in $A$ and thus $A$ has a structure of a prehomogeneous $G(A)$-module. We show that every prehomogeneous module of a commutative linear algebraic group appears this way. In particular, the number of equivalence classes of prehomogeneous $G$-modules is finite if and only if the corank of $G$ is at most $5$.

Polynomial curves on trinomial hypersurfaces

We prove that every rational trinomial affine hypersurface admits a horizontal polynomial curve. This result provides an explicit non-trivial polynomial solution to a trinomial equation. Also we show that a trinomial affine hypersurface admits a Schwartz-Halphen curve if and only if the trinomial comes from a platonic triple. It is a generalization of Schwartz-Halphen's Theorem for Pham-Brieskorn surfaces.

Infinite transitivity and special automorphisms

It is known that if the special automorphism group $\text{SAut}(X)$ of a quasiaffine variety $X$ of dimension at least $2$ acts transitively on $X$, then this action is infinitely transitive. In this paper we address the question whether this is the only possibility for the automorphism group $\text{Aut}(X)$ to act infinitely transitively on $X$. We show that this is the case provided $X$ admits a nontrivial $\mathbb{G}_a$- or $\mathbb{G}_m$-action. Moreover, 2-transitivity of the automorphism group implies infinite transitivity.

Gale duality and homogeneous toric varieties

A non-degenerate toric variety $X$ is called $S$-homogeneous if the subgroup of the automorphism group $\text{Aut}(X)$ generated by root subgroups acts on $X$ transitively. We prove that maximal $S$-homogeneous toric varieties are in bijection with pairs $(P,\mathcal{A})$, where $P$ is an abelian group and $\mathcal{A}$ is a finite collection of elements in $P$ such that $\mathcal{A}$ generates the group $P$ and for every $a\in\mathcal{A}$ the element $a$ is contained in the semigroup generated by $\mathcal{A}\setminus\{a\}$. We show that any non-degenerate homogeneous toric variety is a big open toric subset of a maximal $S$-homogeneous toric variety. In particular, every homogeneous toric variety is quasiprojective. We conjecture that any non-degenerate homogeneous toric variety is $S$-homogeneous.

The automorphism group of a rigid affine variety

An irreducible algebraic variety $X$ is rigid if it admits no nontrivial action of the additive group of the ground field. We prove that the automorphism group $\text{Aut}(X)$ of a rigid affine variety contains a unique maximal torus $\mathbb{T}$. If the grading on the algebra of regular functions $\mathbb{K}[X]$ defined by the action of $\mathbb{T}$ is pointed, the group $\text{Aut}(X)$ is a finite extension of $\mathbb{T}$. As an application, we describe the automorphism group of a rigid trinomial affine hypersurface and find all isomorphisms between such hypersurfaces.

On rigidity of factorial trinomial hypersurfaces

An affine algebraic variety $X$ is rigid if the algebra of regular functions ${\mathbb K}[X]$ admits no nonzero locally nilpotent derivation. We prove that a factorial trinomial hypersurface is rigid if and only if every exponent in the trinomial is at least 2.

Additive actions on toric varieties

By an additive action on an algebraic variety $X$ of dimension $n$ we mean a regular action $\mathbb{G}_a^n \times X \to X$ with an open orbit of the commutative unipotent group $\mathbb{G}_a^n$. We prove that if a complete toric variety $X$ admits an additive action, then it admits an additive action normalized by the acting torus. Normalized additive actions on a toric variety $X$ are in bijection with complete collections of Demazure roots of the fan of $X$. Moreover, any two normalized additive actions on $X$ are isomorphic.

Equivariant embeddings of commutative linear algebraic groups of corank one

Let K be an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, G_m=(K\{0},*) be its multiplicative group, and G_a=(K,+) be its additive group. Consider a commutative linear algebraic group G=G_m^r\times G_a. We study equivariant G-embeddings, i.e. normal G-varieties X containing G as an open orbit. We prove that X is a toric variety and all such actions of G on X correspond to Demazure roots of the fan of X. In these terms, the orbit structure of a G-variety X is described.

Additive actions on projective hypersurfaces

By an additive action on a hypersurface H in the projective space P^{n+1} we mean an effective action of a commutative unipotent group on P^{n+1} which leaves H invariant and acts on H with an open orbit. Brendan Hassett and Yuri Tschinkel have shown that actions of commutative unipotent groups on projective spaces can be described in terms of local algebras with some additional data. We prove that additive actions on projective hypersurfaces correspond to invariant multilinear symmetric forms on local algebras. It allows us to obtain explicit classification results for non-degenerate quadrics and quadrics of corank one.
