Directed random polymers via nested contour integrals

We study the partition function of two versions of the continuum directed polymer in 1+1 dimension. In the full-space version, the polymer starts at the origin and is free to move transversally in the reals, and in the half-space version, the polymer starts at the origin but is reflected at the origin and stays in the negative reals. The partition functions solves the stochastic heat equation in full-space or half-space with mixed boundary condition at the origin; or equivalently the free energy satisfies the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation. We derive exact formulas for the Laplace transforms of the partition functions. In the full-space this is expressed as a Fredholm determinant while in the half-space this is expressed as a Fredholm Pfaffian. Taking long-time asymptotics we show that the limiting free energy fluctuations scale with exponent 1/3 and are given by the GUE and GSE Tracy-Widom distributions. These formulas come from summing divergent moment generating functions, hence are not mathematically justified. The primary purpose of this work is to present a mathematical perspective on the polymer replica method which is used to derive these results. In contrast to other replica method work, we do not appeal directly to the Bethe ansatz for the Lieb-Liniger model but rather utilize nested contour integral formulas for moments as well as their residue expansions.

The $q$-Hahn asymmetric exclusion process

We introduce new integrable exclusion and zero-range processes on the one-dimensional lattice that generalize the $q$-Hahn TASEP and the $q$-Hahn Boson (zero-range) process introduced in [Pov13] and further studied in [Cor14], by allowing jumps in both directions. Owing to a Markov duality, we prove moment formulas for the locations of particles in the exclusion process. This leads to a Fredholm determinant formula that characterizes the distribution of the location of any particle. We show that the model-dependent constants that arise in the limit theorems predicted by the KPZ scaling theory are recovered by a steepest descent analysis of the Fredholm determinant. For some choice of the parameters, our model specializes to the multi-particle-asymmetric diffusion model introduced in [SW98]. In that case, we make a precise asymptotic analysis that confirms KPZ universality predictions. Surprisingly, we also prove that in the partially asymmetric case, the location of the first particle also enjoys cube-root fluctuations which follow Tracy-Widom GUE statistics.

Stationary measure of the driven two-dimensional q-Whittaker particle system on the torus

We consider a q-deformed version of the uniform Gibbs measure on dimers on the periodized hexagonal lattice (equivalently, on interlacing particle configurations, if vertical dimers are seen as particles) and show that it is invariant under a certain irreversible q-Whittaker dynamic. Thereby we provide a new non-trivial example of driven interacting two-dimensional particle system, or of (2+1)-dimensional stochastic growth model, with explicit stationary measure. We emphasize that this measure is far from being a product Bernoulli measure. These Gibbs measures and dynamics both arose earlier in the theory of Macdonald processes. The q=0 degeneration of the Gibbs measures reduce to the usual uniform dimer measures with given tilt, the degeneration of the dynamics originate in the study of Schur processes and the degeneration of the results contained herein were recently treated in work of the second author.

Fluctuations of TASEP and LPP with general initial data

We prove Airy process variational formulas for the one-point probability distribution of (discrete time parallel update) TASEP with general initial data, as well as last passage percolation from a general lattice path to a point. We also consider variants of last passage percolation with inhomogeneous parameter geometric weights and provide variational formulas of a similar nature. This proves one aspect of the conjectural description of the renormalization fixed point of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class.

The strict-weak lattice polymer

We introduce the strict-weak polymer model, and show the KPZ universality of the free energy fluctuation of this model for a certain range of parameters. Our proof relies on the observation that the discrete time geometric q-TASEP model, studied earlier by A. Borodin and I. Corwin, scales to this polymer model in the limit q->1. This allows us to exploit the exact results for geometric q-TASEP to derive a Fredholm determinant formula for the strict-weak polymer, and in turn perform rigorous asymptotic analysis to show KPZ scaling and GUE Tracy-Widom limit for the free energy fluctuations. We also derive moments formulae for the polymer partition function directly by Bethe ansatz, and identify the limit of the free energy using a stationary version of the polymer model.

The q-PushASEP: A New Integrable Model for Traffic in 1+1 Dimension

We introduce a new interacting (stochastic) particle system q-PushASEP which interpolates between the q-TASEP introduced by Borodin and Corwin (see arXiv:1111.4408, and also arXiv:1207.5035; arXiv:1305.2972; arXiv:1212.6716) and the q-PushTASEP introduced recently by Borodin and Petrov (arXiv:1305.5501). In the q-PushASEP, particles can jump to the left or to the right, and there is a certain partially asymmetric pushing mechanism present. This particle system has a nice interpretation as a model of traffic on a one-lane highway in which cars are able to accelerate or slow down. Using the quantum many body system approach, we explicitly compute the expectations of a large family of observables for this system in terms of nested contour integrals. We also discuss relevant Fredholm determinantal formulas for the distribution of the location of each particle, and connections of the model with a certain two-sided version of Macdonald processes and with the semi-discrete stochastic heat equation.

Renormalization fixed point of the KPZ universality class

The one dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class is believed to describe many types of evolving interfaces which have the same characteristic scaling exponents. These exponents lead to a natural renormalization/rescaling on the space of such evolving interfaces. We introduce and describe the renormalization fixed point of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class in terms of a random nonlinear semigroup with stationary independent increments, and via a variational formula. Furthermore, we compute a plausible formula the exact transition probabilities using replica Bethe ansatz. The semigroup is constructed from the Airy sheet, a four parameter space-time field which is the Airy2 process in each of its two spatial coordinates. Minimizing paths through this field describe the renormalization group fixed point of directed polymers in a random potential. At present, the results we provide do not have mathematically rigorous proofs, and they should at most be considered proposals.

From duality to determinants for q-TASEP and ASEP

We prove duality relations for two interacting particle systems: the $q$-deformed totally asymmetric simple exclusion process ($q$-TASEP) and the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP). Expectations of the duality functionals correspond to certain joint moments of particle locations or integrated currents, respectively. Duality implies that they solve systems of ODEs. These systems are integrable and for particular step and half-stationary initial data we use a nested contour integral ansatz to provide explicit formulas for the systems' solutions, and hence also the moments. We form Laplace transform-like generating functions of these moments and via residue calculus we compute two different types of Fredholm determinant formulas for such generating functions. For ASEP, the first type of formula is new and readily lends itself to asymptotic analysis (as necessary to reprove GUE Tracy--Widom distribution fluctuations for ASEP), while the second type of formula is recognizable as closely related to Tracy and Widom's ASEP formula [Comm. Math. Phys. 279 (2008) 815--844, J. Stat. Phys. 132 (2008) 291--300, Comm. Math. Phys. 290 (2009) 129--154, J. Stat. Phys. 140 (2010) 619--634]. For $q$-TASEP, both formulas coincide with those computed via Borodin and Corwin's Macdonald processes [Probab. Theory Related Fields (2014) 158 225--400]. Both $q$-TASEP and ASEP have limit transitions to the free energy of the continuum directed polymer, the logarithm of the solution of the stochastic heat equation or the Hopf--Cole solution to the Kardar--Parisi--Zhang equation. Thus, $q$-TASEP and ASEP are integrable discretizations of these continuum objects; the systems of ODEs associated to their dualities are deformed discrete quantum delta Bose gases; and the procedure through which we pass from expectations of their duality functionals to characterizing generating functions is a rigorous version of the replica trick in physics.

Ergodicity of the Airy line ensemble

In this paper, we establish the ergodicity of the Airy line ensemble. This shows that it is the only candidate for Conjecture 3.2 in [3], regarding the classification of ergodic line ensembles satisfying a certain Brownian Gibbs property after a parabolic shift.

Stochastic six-vertex model

We study the asymmetric six-vertex model in the quadrant with parameters on the stochastic line. We show that the random height function of the model converges to an explicit deterministic limit shape as the mesh size tends to 0. We further prove that the one-point fluctuations around the limit shape are asymptotically governed by the GUE Tracy-Widom distribution. We also explain an equivalent formulation of our model as an interacting particle system, which can be viewed as a discrete time generalization of ASEP started from the step initial condition. Our results confirm an earlier prediction of Gwa and Spohn (1992) that this system belongs to the KPZ universality class.

Spectral theory for the q-Boson particle system

We develop spectral theory for the generator of the q-Boson (stochastic) particle system. Our central result is a Plancherel type isomorphism theorem for this system. This theorem has various implications. It proves the completeness of the Bethe ansatz for the q-Boson generator and consequently enables us to solve the Kolmogorov forward and backward equations for general initial data. Owing to a Markov duality with q-TASEP, this leads to moment formulas which characterize the fixed time distribution of q-TASEP started from general initial conditions. The theorem also implies the biorthogonality of the left and right eigenfunctions. We consider limits of our q-Boson results to a discrete delta Bose gas considered previously by van Diejen, as well as to another discrete delta Bose gas that describes the evolution of moments of the semi-discrete stochastic heat equation (or equivalently, the O'Connell-Yor semi-discrete directed polymer partition function). A further limit takes us to the delta Bose gas which arises in studying moments of the stochastic heat equation / Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation.

Moments and Lyapunov exponents for the parabolic Anderson model

We study the parabolic Anderson model in $(1+1)$ dimensions with nearest neighbor jumps and space-time white noise (discrete space/continuous time). We prove a contour integral formula for the second moment and compute the second moment Lyapunov exponent. For the model with only jumps to the right, we prove a contour integral formula for all moments and compute moment Lyapunov exponents of all orders.

Macdonald processes, quantum integrable systems and the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class

Integrable probability has emerged as an active area of research at the interface of probability/mathematical physics/statistical mechanics on the one hand, and representation theory/integrable systems on the other. Informally, integrable probabilistic systems have two properties: 1) It is possible to write down concise and exact formulas for expectations of a variety of interesting observables (or functions) of the system. 2) Asymptotics of the system and associated exact formulas provide access to exact descriptions of the properties and statistics of large universality classes and universal scaling limits for disordered systems. We focus here on examples of integrable probabilistic systems related to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class and explain how their integrability stems from connections with symmetric function theory and quantum integrable systems.

The $(q,μ,ν)$-Boson process and $(q,μ,ν)$-TASEP

We prove a intertwining relation (or Markov duality) between the $(q,μ,ν)$-Boson process and $(q,μ,ν)$-TASEP, two discrete time Markov chains introduced by Povolotsky. Using this and a variant of the coordinate Bethe ansatz we compute nested contour integral formulas for expectations of a family of observables of the $(q,μ,ν)$-TASEP when started from step initial data. We then utilize these to prove a Fredholm determinant formula for distribution of the location of any given particle.

Observables of Macdonald processes

We present a framework for computing averages of various observables of Macdonald processes. This leads to new contour--integral formulas for averages of a large class of multilevel observables, as well as Fredholm determinants for averages of two different single level observables.

Crossover distributions at the edge of the rarefaction fan

We consider the weakly asymmetric limit of simple exclusion process with drift to the left, starting from step Bernoulli initial data with $ρ_-<ρ_+$ so that macroscopically one has a rarefaction fan. We study the fluctuations of the process observed along slopes in the fan, which are given by the Hopf--Cole solution of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation, with appropriate initial data. For slopes strictly inside the fan, the initial data is a Dirac delta function and the one point distribution functions have been computed in [Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 64 (2011) 466-537] and [Nuclear Phys. B 834 (2010) 523-542]. At the edge of the rarefaction fan, the initial data is one-sided Brownian. We obtain a new family of crossover distributions giving the exact one-point distributions of this process, which converge, as $T\nearrow\infty$ to those of the Airy $\mathcal{A}_{2\to \mathrm{BM}}$ process. As an application, we prove moment and large deviation estimates for the equilibrium Hopf-Cole solution of KPZ. These bounds rely on the apparently new observation that the FKG inequality holds for the stochastic heat equation. Finally, via a Feynman-Kac path integral, the KPZ equation also governs the free energy of the continuum directed polymer, and thus our formula may also be interpreted in those terms.

Discrete time q-TASEPs

We introduce two new exactly solvable (stochastic) interacting particle systems which are discrete time versions of q-TASEP. We call these geometric and Bernoulli discrete time q-TASEP. We obtain concise formulas for expectations of a large enough class of observables of the systems to completely characterize their fixed time distributions when started from step initial condition. We then extract Fredholm determinant formulas for the marginal distribution of the location of any given particle. Underlying this work is the fact that these expectations solve closed systems of difference equations which can be rewritten as free evolution equations with k-1 two-body boundary conditions -- discrete q-deformed versions of the quantum delta Bose gas. These can be solved via a nested contour integral ansatz. The same solutions also arise in the study of Macdonald processes, and we show how the systems of equations our expectations solve are equivalent to certain commutation relations involving the Macdonald first difference operator.

Tropical Combinatorics and Whittaker functions

We establish a fundamental connection between the geometric RSK correspondence and GL(N,R)-Whittaker functions, analogous to the well known relationship between the RSK correspondence and Schur functions. This gives rise to a natural family of measures associated with GL(N,R)-Whittaker functions which are the analogues in this setting of the Schur measures on integer partitions. The corresponding analogue of the Cauchy-Littlewood identity can be seen as a generalisation of an integral identity for GL(N,R)-Whittaker functions due to Bump and Stade. As an application, we obtain an explicit integral formula for the Laplace transform of the law of the partition function associated with a one-dimensional directed polymer model with log-gamma weights recently introduced by one of the authors (TS).
