Quasi-Feynman formulas that provide fast converging Chernoff approximations to solution of parabolic differential equation on the real line

We construct explicit approximations to the solution of a second-order parabolic partial differential equation on the real line with variable coefficients. The method is based on Chernoff's product formula and uses a new operator-valued function defined through proper Riemann integrals over a bounded interval, which makes the approach readily usable in numerical practice. For sufficiently smooth initial data and coefficients, we prove that the resulting Chernoff approximations converge uniformly in space and time with a quadratic rate, improving the standard first-order estimate. The construction yields a new class of quasi-Feynman formulas that are neither grid-based nor Galerkin-type, but instead rely on semigroup theory and multiple bounded integrals. The theoretical findings are validated by symbolic computation, and the paper contributes both refined error bounds and a practical analytical tool for parabolic problems.

Chernoff approximations as a method for finding the resolvent of a linear operator and solving a linear ODE with variable coefficients

The Chernoff approximation method is a powerful and flexible tool of functional analysis, which allows in many cases to express exp(tL) in terms of variable coefficients of a linear differential operator L. In this paper, we prove a theorem that allows us to apply this method to find the resolvent of L. Our theorem states that the Laplace transforms of Chernoff approximations of a $C_0$-semigroup converge to the resolvent of the generator of this semigroup. We demonstrate the proposed method on a second-order differential operator with variable coefficients. As a consequence, we obtain a new representation of the solution of a nonhomogeneous linear ordinary differential equation of the second order in terms of functions that are coefficients of this equation, playing the role of parameters of the problem. For the Chernoff function, based on the shift operator, we give an estimate for the rate of convergence of approximations to the solution.

Upper and lower estimates for rate of convergence in the Chernoff product formula for semigroups of operators

Chernoff approximations to strongly continuous one-parameter semigroups give solutions to a wide class of differential equations. This paper studies the rate of convergence of the Chernoff approximations. We provide simple natural examples for which the convergence is arbitrary fast, is arbitrary slow, and holds in the strong operator topology but does not hold in the norm operator topology. We also prove a general theorem that gives an upper estimate for the speed of decay of the norm of the residual term of the Chernoff approximations. The result is applied to one-dimensional parabolic differential equations with variable coefficients. The obtained estimates can be used for the numerical solution of PDEs.

Solution-giving formula to Cauchy problem for multidimensional parabolic equation with variable coefficients

We present a general method of solving the Cauchy problem for multidimensional parabolic (diffusion type) equation with variable coefficients which depend on spatial variable but do not change over time. We assume the existence of the $C_0$-semigroup (this is a standard assumption in the evolution equations theory, which guarantees the existence of the solution) and then find the representation (based on the family of translation operators) of the solution in terms of coefficients of the equation and initial condition. It is proved that if the coefficients of the equation are bounded, infinitely smooth and satisfy some other conditions then there exists a solution-giving $C_0$-semigroup of contraction operators. We also represent the solution as a Feynman formula (i.e. as a limit of a multiple integral with multiplicity tending to infinity) with generalized functions appearing in the integral kernel.

Formulas that represent Cauchy problem solution for momentum and position Schrödinger equation

In the paper we derive two formulas representing solutions of Cauchy problem for two Schrödinger equations: one-dimensional momentum space equation with polynomial potential, and multidimensional position space equation with locally square integrable potential. The first equation is a constant coefficients particular case of an evolution equation with derivatives of arbitrary high order and variable coefficients that do not change over time, this general equation is solved in the paper. We construct a family of translation operators in the space of square integrable functions and then use methods of functional analysis based on Chernoff product formula to prove that this family approximates the solution-giving semigroup. This leads us to some formulas that express the solution for Cauchy problem in terms of initial condition and coefficients of the equations studied.

Approximations to the solution of Cauchy problem for a linear evolution equation via the space shift operator (second-order equation example)

We present a general method of solving the Cauchy problem for a linear parabolic partial differential equation of evolution type with variable coefficients and demonstrate it on the equation with derivatives of orders two, one and zero. The method is based on the Chernoff approximation procedure applied to a specially constructed shift operator. It is proven that approximations converge uniformly to the exact solution.

Quasi-Feynman formulas -- a method of obtaining the evolution operator for the Schroedinger equation

For a densely defined self-adjoint operator $\mathcal{H}$ in Hilbert space $\mathcal{F}$ the operator $\exp(-it\mathcal{H})$ is the evolution operator for the Schrödinger equation $iψ'_t=\mathcal{H}ψ$, i.e. if $ψ(0,x)=ψ_0(x)$ then $ψ(t,x)=(\exp(-it\mathcal{H})ψ_0)(x)$ for $x\in Q.$ The space $\mathcal{F}$ here is the space of wave functions $ψ$ defined on an abstract space $Q$, the configuration space of a quantum system, and $\mathcal{H}$ is the Hamiltonian of the system. In this paper the operator $\exp(-it\mathcal{H})$ for all real values of $t$ is expressed in terms of the family of self-adjoint bounded operators $S(t), t\geq 0$, which is Chernoff-tangent to the operator $-\mathcal{H}$. One can take $S(t)=\exp(-t\mathcal{H})$, or use other, simple families $S$ that are listed in the paper. The main theorem is proven on the level of semigroups of bounded operators in $\mathcal{F}$ so it can be used in a wider context due to its generality. Two examples of application are provided.

Quasi-Feynman formulas for a Schroedinger equation with a Hamiltonian equal to a finite sum of operators

In this short communication I generalize the method of obtaining quasi-Feynman formulas described in my previous paper on that topic. The theorem presented allows to obtain the solution to the Cauchy problem for the Schrödinger equation with the Hamiltonian decomposed to a finite sum of operators. The concept of Chernoff tangency is used, and the solution is written in the form of a quasi-Feynman formula as before. Theorem proven is compared to known approximation theorems: Trotter's, Chernoff's, Butko-Schilling-Smolyanov's.

Solution to a parabolic differential equation in Hilbert space via Feynman formula - parts I and II

A parabolic partial differential equation $u'_t(t,x)=Lu(t,x)$ is considered, where $L$ is a linear second-order differential operator with time-independent coefficients, which may depend on $x$. We assume that the spatial coordinate $x$ belongs to a finite- or infinite-dimensional real separable Hilbert space $H$. Assuming the existence of a strongly continuous resolving semigroup for this equation, we construct a representation of this semigroup by a Feynman formula, i.e. we write it in the form of the limit of a multiple integral over $H$ as the multiplicity of the integral tends to infinity. This representation gives a unique solution to the Cauchy problem in the uniform closure of the set of smooth cylindrical functions on $H$. Moreover, this solution depends continuously on the initial condition. In the case where the coefficient of the first-derivative term in $L$ vanishes we prove that the strongly continuous resolving semigroup exists (this implies the existence of the unique solution to the Cauchy problem in the class mentioned above) and that the solution to the Cauchy problem depends continuously on the coefficients of the equation.

D(Maximum)=P(Argmaximum)

In this note, we propose a formula for the subdifferential of the maximum functional $m(f) = \max_K f$ on the space of real-valued continuous functions $f$ defined on an arbitrary metric compact $K$. We show that, given $f$, the subdifferential of $m(f)$ always coincides with the set of all probability measures on the arg-maximum (the set of all points in $K$ at which $f$ reaches the maximal value). In fact, this relation lies in the core of several important identities in microeconomics, such as Roy's identity, Sheppard's lemma, as well as duality theory in production and linear programming.
