Wearable Conformal Fiber Sensor for High Fidelity Physiological Measurements

Wearable devices are becoming increasingly important, addressing needs in both the fitness and the medical markets. In this paper, we describe a novel sensing platform based on a hollow-core polyurethane optical fiber, operating through capillary guidance, that acts as a conformal sensor of pressure or deformation. The novelty is achieved by combining a simple structure (hollow capillary) and a simple detection technique (intensity-based measurement) with unconventional material properties (extreme deformability and high optical absorbance). Used on the wrist and ankle, the sensor allows detailed features of the cardiac pulse wave to be identified with high fidelity, while on the chest it allows the simultaneous measurement of breathing rate and walking cadence. Used together, an array of such sensors (with others) could be incorporated into clothing and provide physiologically rich real-time data for health monitoring.

Golden Vaterite as a Mesoscopic Metamaterial for Biophotonic Applications

Mesoscopic photonic systems with tailored optical responses have great potential to open new frontiers in implantable biomedical devices. However, biocompatibility is typically a problem, as engineering of optical properties often calls for using toxic compounds and chemicals, unsuitable for in vivo applications. Here, we demonstrate a unique approach to biofriendly delivery of optical resonances. We show that the controllable infusion of gold nanoseeds into polycrystalline submicron vaterite spherulites gives rise to a variety of electric and magnetic Mie resonances, producing a tuneable mesoscopic optical metamaterial. The three-dimensional reconstruction of the spherulites demonstrates the capability of controllable gold loading with volumetric filling factors exceeding 28%. Owing to the biocompatibility of the constitutive elements, golden vaterite paves the way to introduce designer-made Mie resonances to cuttingedge biophotonic applications. We exemplify this concept by showing efficient laser heating of gold-filled vaterite spherulites at red and near-infrared wavelengths, highly desirable in photothermal therapy and photoacoustic tomography

Giant Stokes shifts in AgInS$_2$ nanocrystals with trapped charge carriers

Nanocrystals of AgInS$_2$ demonstrate giant Stokes shifts ~ 1 eV, the nature of which is still not clearly understood. We propose a theoretical model of this phenomenon bringing together several different mechanisms previously considered only separately. We take into account the contribution of electron-electron interaction with the hybrid density functional theory, as well as the renormalization of energy spectrum due to the electron-phonon coupling. Furthermore, we consider the presence of at least one point defect responsible for hole trapping and the formation of a localized polaron state. Our numerical simulations show that photoluminescence due to the recombination of a non-trapped electron and a trapped hole results in the giant Stokes shift in AgInS$_2$ nanocrystal, which is in close agreement with the recent experimental results.
