Towards Efficient Training of Graph Neural Networks: A Multiscale Approach

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have become powerful tools for learning from graph-structured data, finding applications across diverse domains. However, as graph sizes and connectivity increase, standard GNN training methods face significant computational and memory challenges, limiting their scalability and efficiency. In this paper, we present a novel framework for efficient multiscale training of GNNs. Our approach leverages hierarchical graph representations and subgraphs, enabling the integration of information across multiple scales and resolutions. By utilizing coarser graph abstractions and subgraphs, each with fewer nodes and edges, we significantly reduce computational overhead during training. Building on this framework, we propose a suite of scalable training strategies, including coarse-to-fine learning, subgraph-to-full-graph transfer, and multiscale gradient computation. We also provide some theoretical analysis of our methods and demonstrate their effectiveness across various datasets and learning tasks. Our results show that multiscale training can substantially accelerate GNN training for large scale problems while maintaining, or even improving, predictive performance.

The determinant of the Laplacian matrix of a quaternion unit gain graph

A quaternion unit gain graph is a graph where each orientation of an edge is given a quaternion unit, and the opposite orientation is assigned the inverse of this quaternion unit. In this paper, we provide a combinatorial description of the determinant of the Laplacian matrix of a quaternion unit gain graph by using row-column noncommutative determinants recently introduced by one of the authors. A numerical example is presented for illustrating our results.

Determinantal representations of the weighted core-EP, DMP, MPD, and CMP inverses of matrices with quaternion and complex elements

In this paper, we extend notions of the weighted core-EP right and left inverses, the weighted DMP and MPD inverses, and the CMP inverse to matrices over the quaternion skew field H that have some features in comparison to these inverses over the complex field. We give the direct methods of their computing, namely, their determinantal representations by using noncommutative column and row determinants previously introduced by the author. As the special cases, by using the usual determinant, we give their determinantal representations for matrices with complex entries as well. A numerical example to illustrate the main result is given.

The quaternion core inverse and its generalizations

In this paper we extend notions of the core inverse, core EP inverse, DMP inverse, and CMP inverse over the quaternion skew-field ${\mathbb{H}}$ and get their determinantal representations within the framework of the theory of column-row determinants previously introduced by the author. Since the Moore-Penrose inverse and the Drazin inverse are necessary tools to represent these generalized inverses, we use their determinantal representations previously obtained by using row-column determinants. As the special case, we give their determinantal representations for matrices with complex entries as well. A numerical example to illustrate the main result is given.
