Classical Optimal Designs for Stationary Diffusion with Multiple Phases

We study optimal design problems for stationary diffusion involving one or more state equations and mixtures of an arbitrary number of anisotropic materials. Since such problems typically do not admit classical solutions, we adopt a homogenization-based relaxation framework. The objective considered is the maximization of a weighted sum of the energies associated with each state equation, with particular emphasis on identifying cases in which the optimal design is classical, that is, of bang-bang type, composed solely of the original pure materials. Such cases provide valuable benchmarks for numerical methods in optimal design. A simplified optimization problem expressed in terms of local material proportions is analyzed through a dual formulation in terms of fluxes. Using a saddle-point characterization, we establish a complete description of its optimal solutions. The proposed approach is applied in detail to spherically symmetric problems. In the case of a ball, the method yields explicit classical solutions of the homogenization-based relaxation problem.

Bayesian statistics approach to chess engines optimization

We develop a new method for stochastic optimization using the Bayesian statistics approach. More precisely, we optimize parameters of chess engines as those data are available to us, but the method should apply to all situations where we want to optimize a certain gain/loss function which has no analytical form and thus cannot be measured directly but only by comparison of two parameter sets. We also experimentally compare the new method with the famous SPSA method.

Continuity of pseudodifferential operators with nonsmooth symbols on mixed-norm Lebesgue spaces

Mixed-norm Lebesgue spaces found their place in the study of some questions in the theory of partial differential equations, as can be seen from recent interest in the continuity of certain classes of pseudodifferential operators on these spaces. In this paper, we use some recent advances in the pseudodifferential calculus for nonsmooth symbols to prove the boundedness of pseudodifferential operators with such symbols on mixed-norm Lebesgue spaces.

A generalization of $H$-measures and application on purely fractional scalar conservation laws

We extend the notion of $H$-measures on test functions defined on $\R^d\times P$, where $P\subset \R^d$ is an arbitrary compact simply connected Lipschitz manifold such that there exists a family of regular nonintersecting curves issuing from the manifold and fibrating $\R^d$. We introduce a concept of quasi-solutions to purely fractional scalar conservation laws and apply our extension of the $H$-measures to prove strong $L^1_{loc}$ precompactness of such quasi-solutions.
