Determination of Light Curve Parameters of Poorly Studied Eclipsing Variables Using Data from Tess and Other Sky Surveys

A group of poorly studied eclipsing variables (the classification of which is marked as uncertain and/or the period of brightness changes is uncertain) has been studied with the using of the photometric observations of the TESS mission and NSVS, ASAS-SN sky surveys. We also obtained some observations covering the brightness minima of our variables by our group using the telescopes at Astronomical Observatory on Kolonica Saddle (Slovakia) and Observatory and Planetarium in Hlohovec (Slovakia) during the "Variable-2024" astrocamp. The periods and classification were corrected. For NSV 575 and NSV 014 the periods were found for the first time, but it is doubtful that NSV 014 is an eclipsing variable, because there are no eclipses but the asymmetric wave is present, which indicates that the variable star can be re-classified as a low-amplitude pulsating one. Different methods were used for approximation of the light curves and further calculation of stellar system's parameters such as eclipse depths and durations, values of reflection effect and effect of ellipticity of stars. The initial period was estimated using the periodogram based on the trigonometrical polynomial fit of high order (up to 10). For better approximation of the complete eclipsing phase curve, the "New Algol Variable" (NAV) software was used. The methods of "asymptotic parabolas" and "wall-supported asymptotic parabolas" were used for calculation of moments of eclipses, which use only near-eclipse part of the observations instead of a complete curve. These methods were implemented in the software MAVKA among a larger set of features. For the variables NSV 489 and NSV 1884, our moments of eclipses and the ones found in the literature, were used for the O-C curves. For NSV 489, the period was adjusted taking into account the slope of the O-C diagram.

The HADS Star CSS_J102714.3+205943: a Component of a Binary System with an Elliptic Orbit?

We analyzed period changes of the high-amplitude Delta Scuti variable star CSS_J102714.3+205943 for about 20 years, utilizing data from the automated sky surveys along with our own observations. With the help of the O-C diagram, we found that the period decreased noticeably between JD2454800 and JD2457300. A possible cause of the change could be intrinsic processes in the star. However, the observed behavior of the O-C diagram can also be explained by the light-time effect if the star is a component of a binary system. Times of maxima for the star, derived from the surveys and our observations, are listed.

Astroinformatics: Statistically Optimal Approximations of Near-Extremal Parts with Application to Variable Stars

The software MAVKA is described, which was elaborated for statistically optimal determination of the characteristics of the extrema of 1000+ variable stars of different types, mainly eclipsing and pulsating. The approximations are phenomenological, but not physical. As often, the discovery of a new variable star is made on time series of a single-filter (single-channel) data, and there is no possibility to determine parameters needed for physical modelling (e.g. temperature, radial velocities, mass ratio of binaries). Besides classical polynomial approximation "AP" (we limited the degree of the polynomial from 2 to 9), there are realized symmetrical approximations (symmetrical polynomials "SP", "wall-supported" horizontal line "WSL" and parabola "WSP", restricted polynomials of non-integer order based on approximations of the functions proposed by Andronov (2012) and Mikulasek (2015) and generally asymmetric functions (asymptotic parabola "AP", parabolic spline "PS", generalized hyperbolic secant function "SECH" and "log-normal-like" "BSK"). This software is a successor of the "Observation Obscurer" with some features for the variable star research, including a block for "running parabola" "RP" scalegram and approximation. Whereas the RP is oriented on approximation of the complete data set. MAVKA is pointed to parts of the light curve close to extrema (including total eclipses and transits of stars and exoplanets). The functions for wider intervals, covering the eclipse totally, were discussed in 2017Ap.....60...57A . Global and local approximations are reviewed in 2020kdbd.book..191A . The software is available at http://uavso.org.ua/mavka and https://katerynaandrych.wixsite.com/mavka. We have analyzed the data from own observations, as well as from monitoring obtained at ground-based and space (currently, mainly, TESS) observatories. It may be used for signals of any nature.

Variable Stars: A Net of Complementary Methods for Time Series Analysis. Application to RY UMa

The expert system for time series analysis of irregularly spaced signals is reviewed. It consists of a number of complementary algorithms and programs, which may be effective for different types of variability. Obviously, for a pure sine signal, all the methods should produce the same results. However, for irregularly spaced signals with a complicated structure, e.g. a sum of different components, different methods may produce significantly different results. The basic approach is based on classical method of the least squares (1994OAP.....7...49A). However, contrary to common "step-by-step" methods of removal important components (e.g. mean, trend ("detrending"), sine wave ("prewhitening"), where covariations between different components are ignored, i.e. erroneously assumed to be zero, we use complete mathematical models. Some of the methods are illustrated on the observations of the semi-regular pulsating variable RY UMa. The star shows a drastic cyclic change of semi-amplitude of pulsations between 0.01 to 0.37mag, which is interpreted as a bias between the waves with close periods and a beat period of 4000d (11yr). The dominating period has changed from 307.35(8)d before 1993 to 285.26(6)d after 1993. The initial epoch of the maximum brightness for the recent interval is 2454008.8(5). It is suggested that the apparent period switch is due to variability of amplitudes of these two waves and an occasional swap of the dominating wave.

Mathematical Modelling of Astrophysical Objects and Processes

In this review, we present some advanced algorithms and programs used in our scientific school with short description of types of astrophysical systems, which we study. However, we discuss mainly mathematical methods, which may be applied to analysis of signal of any nature - in computer science, engineering, economics, social studies, decision making etc. The variety of types of signals need a diversity of adequate complementary specific methods, in an addition to common algorithms. As an example, one may refer to vibrations, stability of mechanisms. Many mathematical equations are common in Science, Technics and Humanities.

Poorly Studied Eclipsing Binaries in the Field of DO Dra: V0455 Dra and V0454 Dra

We report an analysis of two poorly studied systems GSC 04396-00605 and GSC 04395-00485, which were recently named as V0455 Dra and V0454 Dra, respectively. For two eclipsing stars, the periods and epochs were significantly corrected using our extensive data. The phenomenological characteristics of the mean light curves were determined using the "New Algol Variable" (NAV) algorithm. The individual times of Maxima/Minima (ToM) were determined using the newly developed software MAVKA, which outputs the accurate parameters using the "asymptotic parabola" approximations. The light curves were approximated using the Wilson-Devinney model, the best fit parameters are listed. For both systems, the presence of the dark spot is justified, the parameters are estimated. Both systems classified to be overcontact binaries of EW type. The observations were obtained using the 1-m Korean telescope of the LOAO while monitoring the cataclysmic variable DO Dra within the "Inter-Longitude Astronomy" (ILA) project.

MAVKA: Program Of Statistically Optimal Determination Of Phenomenological Parameters Of Extrema. Parabolic Spline Algorithm and Analysis of Variability of the Semi-Regular Star Z UMa

Advanced MAVKA software for the approximation of extrema observations is used to analyze the variability of the brightness of pulsating and eclipsing stars, but may be useful in analyzing signals of any nature. A new algorithm using a parabolic (quadratic) spline is proposed. In contrast to the traditional definition of a spline as a piecewise-defined function at fixed intervals, a spline is proposed to be divided into three intervals, but the positions of the boundaries between the intervals are additional parameters. The spline defect is 1, that is, the function and its first derivative are continuous and the second derivative can be discontinuous at the boundaries. Such a function is an enhancement of the "asymptotic parabola" (Marsakova and Andronov 1996). The dependence of the fixed signal approximation accuracy on the location of the boundaries of the interval is considered. The parameter accuracy estimates using the least squares method and bootstrap are compared. The variability of the semi-regular pulsating star Z UMa is analyzed. The presence of multicomponent variability of an object, including, four periodic oscillations and significant variability of the amplitudes and phases of individual oscillations is shown.

Computer Modeling of Irregularly Spaced Signals. Statistical Properties of the Wavelet Approximation Using a Compact Weight Function

The algorithm of modified wavelet analysis is discussed. It is based on the weighted least squares approximation. Contrary to the Gaussian as a weight function, we propose to use a compact weight function. The accuracy estimates using the statistically correct expressions for the least squares approximations with an additional weight function are compared with that obtained using the bootstrap method.

Multi-Algorithm Analysis Of The Semi-Regular Variable DY Per, The Prototype Of The Class Of Cool RCrB Variables

Multiple algorithms of time series analysis are briefly reviewed and partially illustrated by application to the visual observations of the semi-regular variable DY Per from the AFOEV database. These algorithms were implemented in the software MCV (Andronov and Baklanov, 2004), MAVKA (Andrych and Andronov, 2019; Andrych et al., 2019). Contrary to the methods of physical modeling, which need to use too many parameters, many of which may not be determined from pure photometry (like temperature/spectral class, radial velocities, mass ratio), phenomenological algorithms use smaller number of parameters. Beyond the classical algebraic polynomials, in the software MAVKA are implemented other algorithms, totally 21 approximations from 11 classes. Photometric observations of DY Per from the AFOEV international database were analyzed. The photometric period has switched from P=851.1d(4.1) to P=780.5d(2.7) after JD 2454187(9)d. A parameter of sinusoidality is introduced, which is equal to the ratio of effective semi-amplitudes of the signal determined from a sine fit and the running parabola scalegram.

Improvement of Simplified Models of Variability of Stars: A review

Astronomical data are typically irregular in time, e.g. the space (HIPPARCOS/TYCHO, KEPLER, GAIA, WISE etc.) and ground-based CCD (NSVS, ASAS, CRTS, SuperWASP etc.) and photographic (Harvard, Sonneberg, Odessa etc.) photometrical surveys. This leads to cancellation of the conditions, which lead to the orthogonality of the basic functions, and thus the simplified methods give biased parameters of the approximations. We have elaborated a series of algorithms and programs for statistically correct analysis, and have applied them to 2000+ variable stars of different types. The data were obtained from an international collaboration in a frame of the "Inter-Longitude Astronomy" (ILA) campaign. Some highlights of our studies are presented, with an extended list of our original publications. The main improvements were done: 1) for the periodogram analysis - the parameters are determined from a complete set of equations containing the (algebraic polynomial) trend superimposed on the (multi-) harmonic wave, so no "detrending", no "prewhitening" are used; 2) for the approximations - we use additional (multi-) harmonic waves, and also "special shapes" (patterns) for parts of the light curve, which correspond to relatively fast changes (minima of the eclipsing binaries, minima and maxima for the pulsating variables); 3) "auto correlation analysis" (ACF) - taking into account the bias due to a trend removal (previously - only a subtraction of the sample mean was taken into account); ACF for the irregularly spaced data; 4) for the signals with bad coherence, the "scalegram" analysis is proposed, which allows to estimate a characteristic cycle length and the amplitude, as well as to provide a realistic approximation; 5) the extension of the Morlet-type wavelet for more periodic signals and 6) "running" (parabola, sine) approximations for aperiodic and "nearly periodic" variations, respectively.

MAVKA: Software for Statistically Optimal Determination of Extrema

We introduce the program MAVKA for determination of characteristics of extrema using observations in the adjacent data intervals, with intended applications to variable stars, but it may be used for signals of arbitrary nature. We have used a dozen of basic functions, some of them use the interval near extremum without splitting the interval (algebraic polynomial in general form, "Symmetrical" algebraic polynomial using only even degrees of time (phase) deviation from the position of symmetry argument), others split the interval into 2 subintervals (a Taylor series of the "New Algol Variable", "the function of Prof. Z. Mikulášek"), or even 3 parts ("Asymptotic Parabola", "Wall-Supported Parabola", "Wall-Supported Line", "Wall-Supported Asymptotic Parabola", "Parabolic Spline of defect 1"). The variety of methods allows to choose the "best" (statistically optimal) approximation for a given data sample. As the criterion, we use the accuracy of determination of the extremum. For all parameters, the statistical errors are determined. The methods are illustrated by applications to observations of pulsating and eclipsing variable stars, as well as to the exoplanet transits. They are used for the international campaigns "Inter-Longitude Astronomy", "Virtual Observatory" and "AstroInformatics". The program may be used for studies of individual objects, also using ground-based (NSVS, ASAS, WASP, CRTS et al.) and space (GAIA, KEPLER, HIPPARCOS/TYCHO, WISE et al.) surveys.

Odessa Scientific School of Researchers Of Variable Stars: From V.P.Tsesevich (1907-1983) to Our Days

The biography of Vladimir Platonovich Tsesevich (11.11.1907 - 28.10.1983), a leader of the astronomy in Odessa from 1944 to 1983, is briefly reviewed, as well as the directions of study, mainly the highlights of the research of variable stars carried out by the members of the scientific school founded by him. The directions of these studies cover a very wide range of variability types - "magnetic" and "non-magnetic" cataclysmic variables, symbiotic, X-Ray and other interacting binaries, classical eclipsers and "extreme direct impactors", pulsating variables from DSct and RR through C and RV to SR and M. Improved algorithms and programs have been elaborated for statistically optimal phenomenological and physical modeling. Initially these studies in Odessa were inspired by ("with a capital letter") Vladimir Platonovich Tsesevich. who was a meticulous Scientist and brilliant Educator, thorough Author and the intelligibly explaining Popularizer, persevering Organizer and cheerful Joker - a true Professor and Teacher. He was "the Poet of the Starry Heavens".

Statistically Optimal Modeling of Flat Eclipses and Exoplanet Transitions. The "Wall-Supported Polynomial" (WSP) Algoritms

The methods for determination of the characteristics of the extrema are discussed with an application to irregularly spaced data, which are characteristic for photometrical observations of variable stars. We introduce new special functions, which were named as the "Wall-Supported Polynomial" (WSP) of different orders. It is a parabola (WSP), constant line (WSL) or an "asymptotic" parabola (WSAP) with "walls" corresponding to more inclined descending and ascending branches of the light curve. As the interval is split generally into 3 parts, the approximations may be classified as a "non-polynomial spline". These approximations extend a parabolic/linear fit by adding the "walls" with a shape, which asymptotically corresponds to the brightness variations near phases of the inner contact. The fits are compared to that proposed by Andronov (2010, 2012) and Mikulasek (2015) and modified for the case of data near the bottom of eclipses instead of wider intervals of the light curve. The WSL method is preferred for total eclipses showing a brightness standstill. The WSP and WSAP may be generally recommended in a case of transit eclipses, especially by exoplanets. Other two methods, as well as the symmetrical polynomials of statistically optimal order, may be recommended in a general case of non-total eclipses. The method was illustrated by application to observations of a newly discovered eclipsing binary GSC 3692-00624 = 2MASS J01560160+5744488, for which the WSL method provides 12 times better accuracy.

Effects of the Mass Transfer and Presence of the Third Components in Close Binary Stellar Systems

In our research, we have studied 6 close binary stellar systems which are eclipsing variables of $β$ Lyrae and W Ursae Majoris types of variability. We have studied their O-C curves. To build them, we used moments of minima, listed in the BRNO database. Also, we used ones, which we obtained as the result of processing of observational data taken from AAVSO database. As the result of the O-C analysis, we detected that all of these stars have parabolic O-C curves, which might be caused by mass transfer from one component to another. In an addition, 3 from researched stars (U Peg, V0523 Cas and WZ Cyg) have superimposed parabolic and cyclic O-C changes that could be caused by presence of the third components in the systems. Also, we calculated minimal possible masses of third components, rates of the mass transfer for these systems and corrected the ephemerides.
