Is There a Third Component in the Intermediate Polar V405 Aur?

Variability of the spin period of the white dwarf in the V405 Aur (RX J0558.0+5353) system using our observations and previously published maxima timings is analyzed. As the phase light curve contains two nearly equal photometric waves, one maximum was set as a "primary" one. The ephemeris for the maxima of the "spin variability" (due to rotation of the magnetized white dwarf) for recent seasons 2010-2012 is Tmax = HJD 2455882.470614(25)+0.00631314602(46)E. This corresponds to a significant negative trend at the "O-C" diagram. Due to significant gaps in the observational data and statistical error of timings, there may be some suggestions on the spin period variability - a fast period "jump" in 2007y; secular period variations; a cubic ephemeris (which may be interpreted by a precession of the magnetic white dwarf at a time-scale of decades) or a periodic change with a period of 6.2 years and semi-amplitude of 17.2\pm1.8 sec. For the present observations, more reliable are two latter models. To distinguish between them, a continuation of monitoring is needed. The periodic variations may be interpreted by a light time effect caused by a third body of mass (M3 > 0.09M\odot), which corresponds to a low-mass star, but not to an extra-solar planet. In this case, the system belongs to a rare class of cataclysmic variables with a third body.

Variability of the Spin Period of the White Dwarf in the Magnetic Cataclysmic Binary System EX Hya

The observations of the two-periodic magnetic cataclysmic system EX Hya have been carried out, using the telescopes RC16 and TOA-150 of the Tzec Maun observatory. 6 nights of observations were obtained in 2010-2011 (alternatively changing filters VR). Also the databases of WASP, ASAS and AAVSO have been analyzed. Processing time series was carried out using the program MCV. We analyzed changes in the rotation period of the white dwarf, and based on our own and previously published moments of maximum. The ephemeris was determined for the maxima of the radiation flux associated with the rotation of the magnetic white dwarf: Tmax=2437699.89079(59) +0.0465464808(69).E-6.3(2)*10^{-13}E^2, which corresponds to the characteristic timescale of the rotation spin-up of 4.67(14)*10^6 years. This contradicts the estimated value of the mass of the white dwarf of 0.42M_\odot, based on X-ray observations made by Yuasa et al (2010), however, is consistent with estimates of the masses of 0.79 M_\odot (white dwarf) and 0.108 M_\odot (red dwarf) previously published Beuermann and Reinsch (2008), and the assumption that the capture of accreted plasma by magnetic field of the white dwarf is near the border of the Roche lobe. Analyzed moments do not support the assumption of Mauche et al (2009) for a statistically significant cubic term in the ephemeris. Despite the presence of outbursts in EX Hya, there are significant differences from the DO Dra, which supports the introduction to a detailed classification of the intermediate polars the groups of "outbursting intermediate polars" and "magnetic dwarf novae."

Method of Running Sines: Modeling Variability in Long-Period Variables

We review one of complementary methods for time series analysis - the method of "Running Sines". "Crash tests" of the method include signals with a large period variation and with a large trend. The method is most effective for "nearly periodic" signals, which exhibit "wavy shape" with a "cycle length" varying within few dozen per cent (i.e. oscillations of low coherence). This is a typical case for brightness variations of long-period pulsating variables and resembles QPO (Quasi-Periodic Oscillations) and TPO (Transient Periodic Oscillations) in interacting binary stars - cataclysmic variables, symbiotic variables, low-mass X-Ray binaries etc. General theory of "running approximations" was described by Andronov (1997A &AS..125..207A), one of realizations of which is the method of "running sines". The method is related to Morlet-type wavelet analysis improved for irregularly spaced data (Andronov, 1998KFNT...14..490A, 1999sss..conf...57A), as well as to a classical "running mean" (="moving average"). The method is illustrated by an application to a model signal with strongly variable period, as well as to a semi-regular variable AF Cyg. Some other stars studied with this method are discussed, e.g. RU And (switching between "Mira-type" large amplitude oscillations and time intervals of "constancy"), intermediate polars MU Cam (1RXS J062518.2+733433) and BG CMi, magnetic dwarf nova DO Dra, symbiotic stars UV Aur and V1329 Cyg.

Special Shapes for Optimal Phenomenological Approximations of Astronomical Signals

We discuss different methods for phenomenological approximations of signals with (generally) irregularly spaced arguments. Such signals may be classified as periodic, multi-periodic, quasi-periodic (cyclic), burst-type and flicker-type (see e.g. a review by Andronov (2003)). In this talk, we concentrate on (nearly) periodic light curves of the Algol-type eclipsing variables. Having no possibility to determine all physical parameters for all stars and to make physical modeling, the phenomenological fits are used. This is especially important for discovery papers, when there are often available only mono-chromatic photometric data, without estimates of temperature and orbital velocities of the components.

Photometric Behavior of Five Long-Period Pulsating Stars

The variation of average brightness during the time and the variation of the amplitude of the Mira-type stars T Cep, X CrB, U UMi, U Cyg, BG Cyg is studied. For the research, the observations of the members of the French association of observers of variable stars (AFOEV) covering almost 100 years are used. All stars show cyclic variations of the specified parameters. For T Cep, U UMi and U Cyg, the values of quasi-period of the variations of average brightness are about 1400, 1025 and 1680 days, respectively. For the stars T Cep, U UMi and BG Cyg, the period of the brightness variations changes, but we used a mean one. The dependences «average brightness - JD» and «amplitude - JD» are plotted. Results are discussed.

Two-Component Variability of the Semi-Regular Pulsating Star U Delphini

Photometric analysis of photometric variability of the semi-regular pulsating variable U Del is analyzed. From the international AFOEV database, 6231 brightness values in the time interval JD 2451602-55378 were chosen. For the periodogram analysis, we have used a trigonometric polynomial fit. Using the criterion of minimal variance of the approximation at arguments of observations, the optimal degree is s=1. Initial epoch for maximum is T0=JD2453340(3), the period P=1198(4)d. Mean brightness at maximum is 6.624(5), at minimum 7.124(5), i.e. the amplitude is 0.499(5)m. Besides this slow variability, there is a faster oscillation of a period of 119.45(6)d, amplitude 0.303(5)m and an initial epoch for maximum 2453215.1(5). These results are mean during the time interval after that analyzed in the catalogue of Chinarova and Andronov (2000). Also the method of "running sines" with a filter half-width Delta t=0.5P. The local mean (averaged over a short period) brightness varies in a range 6.58-7.41m, the semi-amplitude exhibits very strong variations from 0.01 to 0.46m. The phase is also variable - typically of a full amplitude of 0.5. Close to JD 2452589, occurred a phase jump by a complete period during a descending branch of a slow wave. This effect was not observed during other cycles. No significant correlation between mean brightness and amplitude of short-period oscillation was found. Despite significant variability of amplitude, the periodic contribution is not statistically significant. Also characteristics of individual brightness extrema were found. The study was made in a course of the international project "Inter-Longitude Astronomy" (Andronov et al., 2010) and national project "Ukrainian Virtual Observatory (Vavilova et al., 2012).

Determination of characteristics of newly discovered eclipsing binary 2MASS J18024395 +4003309 = VSX J180243.9+400331

During processing the observations of the intermediate polar 1RXS J180340.0+401214, obtained 26.05.2012 at the 60-cm telescope of the Mt. Suhora observatory (Krakow, Poland), variability of 2MASS J18024395+4003309 was discovered. As this object was not listed in the "General Catalogue of Variable Stars" or "Variable Stars Index", we registered it as VSX J180243.9+400331. Additionally we used 189 separate observations from the Catalina Sky Survey spread over 7 years. The periodogram analysis yields the period of 0d.3348837{\pm}0d.0000002.The object was classified as the Algol-type eclipsing binary with a strong effect of ellipticity. The depths of the primary and secondary minima are nearly identical, which corresponds to a brightness (and maybe) mass ratio close to 1. The statistically optimal degree of the trigonometric polynomial n=4. The most recent minimum occurred at HJD 2456074.4904. The brightness range from our data is 16.56-17.52 (V), 16.18-17.08 (R). The NAV ("New Algol Variable") algorithm was applied for statistically optimal phenomenological modeling and determination of corresponding parameters.

Phenomenological Modeling of the Light Curves of Algol-Type Eclipsing Binary Stars

We introduce a special class of functions for mathematical modeling of periodic signals of special shape with irregularly spaced arguments. This method was developed for determination of phenomenological characteristics of the light curves, which are necessary for registration in the "General Catalogue of Variable Stars" and other databases. For eclipsing binary stars with smooth light curves - of types EB and EW - it is recommended a trigonometric polynomial of optimal degree in a complete or symmetric form. For eclipsing binary systems with narrow minima (EA-type), statistically optimal is an approximation in a class of non-polynomial spline functions. It is used a combination of the second-order trigonometric polynomial (TP2, what describes effects of "reflection", "ellipsoidality" and "spotness") and localized contributions of minima (parametrized in depth and profile separately for primary and secondary minima). Such an approach is characterized by a statistical accuracy of the smoothing curve, which is up to ~1.5-2 times better than the trigonometric polynomial of statistically optimal degree, and the absence of false "waves" in the light curve associated with the effect of Gibbs. In addition to the minimum width, which can not be determined by a trigonometric polynomial approximation, the method allows to determine with better accuracy its depth, as well as to separate the effects of the eclipse and out-of-eclipse parts. For multi-color observations, improving the accuracy of the smoothing of the curve in each filter will allow to obtain with better accuracy the curves of the color index variations. Effectivity of the proposed method increases with decreasing eclipse depth. The method called NAV ("New Algol Variable"), was applied to eclipsing binary systems VSX J022427.8-104034=USNO-B1.0 0793-0023471 and BM UMa. For VSX0224, an alternative model of "double period" is discussed.

Photometric Study of Two Recently Discovered Variable Stars in the Field of BS Cas

Two recently discovered variable stars (CzeV134 = GSC 3682 0018 = USNO-A2.0 1425-1870026 and CzeV135 = GSC 3682 2051 = USNO-A2.0 1425-1825909 = V1094 Cas), which have been identified in the field of the W UMa variable star BS Cas, are studied in the present paper. The phase curves and finding charts for these stars are presented. The ephemeris and other photometric parameters were computed. The phenomenological features indicate that the first star (CzeV134) is probably a low-amplitude RRc Lyrae - type variable star with the period P = 0.419794\pm0.000029 d and the initial epoch T0 = HJD2453236.50412\pm0.00056. The amplitude and the shape of the light curve are variable possibly indicating the Blazhko phenomenon. The second star (CzeV135) was classified as an EW-type binary system of subtype A. However, a β Lyrae type may not be excluded, as various classification parameters lie in a range of overlapping values for both classes. The period P=0.51429090\pm0.00000012 d and the initial epoch T0 = HJD2454543.7920\pm0.0006. The O'Connell effect is clearly visible. There are slight changes of this effect, noticeable while comparing different seasons of observations. O-C diagrams for these stars were analyzed.

A Hot Spot and Mass Transfer of the Algol-type Binary System WZ Crv

We present the results of two color VR observation of the Algol-type binary system WZ Crv (12h44m15.19s, -21d25m35.4s) which were obtained using the remotely controlled telescope TOA-150 of Tzec Maun Observatory. We determined the moments of individual minima, the orbital period and its derivative, the initial epoch, color indices V-R and temperature estimates of the components. Also we noticed that the phase curve is asymmetric: the second maximum is higher than the first one. It indicates that there is a spot in the photosphere of one of the stars in this system.

Idling Magnetic White Dwarf in the Synchronizing Polar BY Cam. The Noah-2 Project

Results of a multi-color study of the variability of the magnetic cataclysmic variable BY Cam are presented. The observations were obtained at the Korean 1.8m and Ukrainian 2.6m, 1.2m and 38-cm telescopes in 2003-2005, 56 observational runs cover 189 hours. The variations of the mean brightness in different colors are correlated with a slope dR/dV=1.29(4), where the number in brackets denotes the error estimates in the last digits. For individual runs, this slope is much smaller ranging from 0.98(3) to 1.24(3), with a mean value of 1.11(1). Near the maximum, the slope becomes smaller for some nights, indicating more blue spectral energy distribution, whereas the night-to-night variability has an infrared character. For the simultaneous UBVRI photometry, the slopes increase with wavelength from dU/dR=0.23(1) to dI/dR=1.18(1). Such wavelength dependence is opposite to that observed in non-magnetic cataclysmic variables, in an agreement to the model of cyclotron emission. The principal component analysis shows two (with a third at the limit of detection) components of variablitity with different spectral energy distribution, which possibly correspond to different regions of emission. The scalegram analysis shows a highest peak corresponding to the 200-min spin variability, its quarter and to the 30-min and 8-min QPOs. The amplitudes of all these components are dependent on wavelength and luminosity state. The light curves were fitted by a statistically optimal trigonometrical polynomial (up to 4-th order) to take into account a 4-hump structure. The dependences of these parameters on the phase of the beat period and on mean brightness are discussed. The amplitude of spin variations increases with an increasing wavelength and with decreasing brightness
