Topological Flat Bands and Correlated States in Twisted Monolayer-Bilayer Graphene

Monolayer graphene placed with a twist on top of AB-stacked bilayer graphene hosts topological flat bands in a wide range of twist angles. The dispersion of these bands and gaps between them can be efficiently controlled by a perpendicular electric field, which induces topological transitions accompanied by changes of the Chern numbers. In the regime where the applied electric field induces gaps between the flat bands, we find a relatively uniform distribution of the Berry curvature. Consequently, interaction-induced valley- and/or spin-polarized states at integer filling factors are energetically favorable. In particular, we predict a quantum anomalous Hall state at filling factor $ν=1$ for a range of twist angles $1^\circ<θ<1.4^\circ$. Furthermore, to characterize the response of the system to magnetic field, we computed the Hofstadter butterfly and the Wannier plot, which can be used to probe the dispersion and topology of the flat bands in this material.

Highlighting superconductivity in an insulator

Superconductor-insulator transition is a fascinating quantum phenomenon that reveals a competition between phase order and charge localization. Microwave spectroscopy provides a novel promising approach to its controllable investigation in 1D Josephson arrays.

Spin-mediated particle transport in the disordered Hubbard model

Motivated by the recent experiments that reported signatures of many-body localization of ultracold atoms in optical lattices [M. Schreiber {\it et al.}, Science {\bf 349}, 842 (2015)], we study dynamics of highly excited states in the strongly disordered Hubbard model in one dimension. Owing to the $SU(2)$ spin symmetry, spin degrees of freedom form a delocalized thermal bath with a narrow bandwidth. The spin bath mediates slow particle transport, eventually leading to delocalization of particles. The particle hopping rate is exponentially small in $t/W$ ($t$, $W$ being hopping and disorder scales) owing to the narrow bandwidth of the spin bath. We find the optimal lenghtscale for particle hopping, and show that the particle transport rate depends strongly on the density of singly occupied sites in the initial state. The delocalization rate is zero for initial states with only doubly occupied or empty sites, suggesting that such states are truly many-body localized, and therefore the Hubbard model may host both localized and delocalized states. Full many-body localization can be induced by breaking spin rotational symmetry.

Bounds on Energy Absorption and Prethermalization in Quantum Systems with Long-Range Interactions

Long-range interacting systems such as nitrogen vacancy centers in diamond and trapped ions serve as useful experimental setups to probe a range of nonequilibrium many-body phenomena. In particular, via driving, various effective Hamiltonians with physics potentially quite distinct from short-range systems can be realized. In this Letter, we derive general bounds on the linear response energy absorption rates of periodically driven systems of spins or fermions with long-range interactions that are sign changing and fall off as $1/r^α$ with $α> d/2$. We show that the disordered averaged energy absorption rate at high temperature decays exponentially with the driving frequency. This strongly suggests the presence of a prethermal plateau in which dynamics is governed by an effective, static Hamiltonian for long times, and we provide numerical evidence to support such a statement. Our results are relevant for understanding timescales of both heating and hence new dynamical regimes described by effective Hamiltonians in such long-range systems.

Charge solitons and their dynamical mass in 1-D arrays of Josephson junctions

We investigate the charge transport in one-dimensional arrays of Josephson junctions. In the interesting regime of "small charge solitons" (polarons), the charge dynamics is strongly influenced by the polaronic effects, i.e., by dressing of a Cooper pair by charge dipoles. In particular, the soliton's mass in this regime scales approximately as inverse square of the Josephson energy. We employ two theoretical techniques: the many body tight-binding approach and the mean-field approach. Results of the two approaches agree in the regime of "small charge solitons".
