Hybridization of Kerr Solitons in Coupled Microresonators

Recent advances in manufacturing photonic integrated devices enable efficient coupling between high-Q microresonators in both linear and nonlinear regimes, creating a tunable, complex, hybridized optical system. Considering two coupled microresonators with normal and anomalous dispersion and equal free spectral range (FSR), we theoretically predict a novel nonlinear phenomenon: fully coherent hybridization of dissipative Kerr solitons (DKS) and propose a realistic integrated photonic design for its experimental observation. Using the Lugiato-Lefever equations in the supermode basis, we show that the emergent picture of inter-resonator DKS interactions can be understood as the formation of coherent structures in both supermodes generated by an unusual four-wave mixing process. The found hybridized DKS states can exhibit a broad, flat spectral profile near the pumped mode and remarkable oscillatory features in the spectral wings, promising broad applications in the generation and control of optical Kerr frequency combs.

Real-Time Observation of Self-Interstitial Reactions on an Atomically Smooth Silicon Surface

Self-diffusion and impurity diffusion both play crucial roles in the fabrication of semiconductor nanostructures with high surface-to-volume ratios. However, experimental studies of bulk-surface reactions of point defects in semiconductors are strongly hampered by extremely low concentrations and difficulties in the visualization of single point defects in the crystal lattice. Herein we report the first real-time experimental observation of the self-interstitial reactions on a large atomically smooth silicon surface. We show that non-equilibrium self-interstitials generated in silicon bulk during gold diffusion in the temperature range 860-1000^oC are annihilated at the (111) surface, producing the net mass flux of silicon from the bulk to the surface. The kinetics of the two-dimensional islands formed by self-interstitials are dominated by the reactions at the atomic step edges. The activation energy for the interaction of self-interstitials with the surface and energy barrier for gold penetration into the silicon bulk through the surface are estimated. These results demonstrating that surface morphology can be profoundly affected by surface-bulk reactions should have important implications for the development of nanoscale fabrication techniques.

Numerically exact, time-dependent treatment of vibrationally coupled electron transport in single-molecule junctions

The multilayer multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree (ML-MCTDH) theory within second quantization representation of the Fock space, a novel numerically exact methodology to treat many-body quantum dynamics for systems containing identical particles, is applied to study the effect of vibrational motion on electron transport in a generic model for single-molecule junctions. The results demonstrate the importance of electronic-vibrational coupling for the transport characteristics. For situations where the energy of the bridge state is located close to the Fermi energy, the simulations show the time-dependent formation of a polaron state that results in a pronounced suppression of the current corresponding to the phenomenon of phonon blockade. We show that this phenomenon cannot be explained solely by the polaron shift of the energy but requires methods that incorporate the dynamical effect of the vibrations on the transport. The accurate results obtained with the ML-MCTDH in this parameter regime are compared to results of nonequilibrium Green's function (NEGF) theory.
