Quark Distributions of Octet Baryons from SU(3) Symmetry

SU(3) symmetry relations between the octet baryons are introduced in order to connect both the unpolarized and polarized quark distributions of the octet baryons with those of the nucleon. Two different parametrizations of the nucleon quark distributions are used. A new scenario of quark flavor and spin structure of the $Λ$ is found and compared with two other models: a perturbative QCD based analysis and a quark diquark model. The $u$ and $d$ quarks inside the $Λ$ are predicted to be positively polarized at large Bjorken variable $x$ in the new scenario. By using an approximate relation connecting the quark fragmentation functions with the quark distributions, the hadron polarizations of the octet baryons in $e^+e^-$-annihilation, polarized charged lepton deep inelastic scattering (DIS) processes, and neutrino (antineutrino) DIS processes are predicted. The predictions for $Λ$ polarizations in several processes are compatible with the available data at large fragmentation momentum fraction $z$, and support the prediction of positively polarized $u$ and $d$ quarks inside the $Λ$ at large $x$. Predictions for Drell-Yan processes from $Σ^{\pm}$ and $Ξ^-$ beams on an isoscalar target are also given and discussed.

Spin Transfers for Baryon Production in Polarized pp Collisions at RHIC-BNL

We consider the inclusive production of longitudinally polarized baryons in ${\vec p}p$ collisions at RHIC-BNL, with one longitudinally polarized proton. We study the spin transfer between the initial proton and the produced baryon as a function of its rapidity and we elucidate its sensitivity to the quark helicity distributions of the proton and to the polarized fragmentation functions of the quark into the baryon. We make predictions using an SU(6) quark spectator model and a perturbative QCD (pQCD) based model. We discuss these different predictions, and what can be learned from them, in view of the forthcoming experiments at RHIC-BNL.

Resummations with renormalon effects for the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon (g-2)

The hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon (g-2) value is calculated by considering a known dispersion integral which involves the $R_{e+ e-}(s)$ ratio. The theoretical part stemming from the region below 1.8 GeV is the largest contribution in our approach, and is calculated by using a contour integral involving the associated Adler function $D(Q^2)$. In the resummations, we explicitly take into account the exactly known renormalon singularity of the leading infrared renormalon in the usual and in the modified Borel transform of $D(Q^2)$, and map further away from the origin the other renormalon singularities by employing judiciously chosen conformal transformations. The renormalon effect increases the predicted value of the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon (g-2), and therefore diminishes the difference between the recently measured and the SM/QCD-predicted value of (g-2). It is also shown that the total QED correction to the hadronic vacuum polarization is very small, about 0.06 percent.

Muon-electron conversion in strange quark sea

We study nuclear muon-electron (mu-e) conversion in the general framework of effective Lagrangian approach without referring to any specific realization of the physics beyond the standard model (SM) responsible for lepton flavor violation (LFV). All the possible types of short range interactions (non-photonic mechanisms), i.e. (pseudo-)scalar, (axial-)vector and tensor, are included in our formalism. We show that the mu-e conversion in the strange nucleon sea via the scalar interactions is comparable with that in the valence quarks. This provides an insight into the strange quark couplings beyond the SM. From the available experimental data on mu-e conversion and expected sensitivities of planned experiments we derived upper bounds on the generic LFV - parameters of mu-e conversion sensitive to the relevant u-,d- and s-quark couplings.

B-quark mediated neutrinoless $μ^--e^-$ conversion in presence of R-parity violation

We found that in supersymmetric models with R-parity non-conservation the b-quarks may appreciably contribute to exotic neutrinoless muon-electron conversion in nuclei via the triangle diagram with two external gluons. This allowed us to extract previously overlooked constraints on the third generation trilinear R-parity violating parameters significantly more stringent than those existing in the literature.

Sterile neutrinos in tau lepton decays

We study possible contributions of heavy sterile neutrinos $ν_h$ to the decays $τ^-\to e^{\pm}(μ^{\pm})π^{\mp}π^-$. From the experimental upper bounds on their rates we derive new constraints on the $ν_h-ν_τ$ mixing in the mass region $140.5{MeV}\leq m_{ν_h}\leq 1637$ MeV. We discuss cosmological and astrophysical status of $ν_h$ in this mass region and compare our constraints with those recently derived by the NOMAD collaboration.

Lepton number violating processes and Majorana neutrinos

We discuss some generic properties of lepton number violating (\Lv) processes and their relation to different entries of the Majorana neutrino mass matrix. Present and near future experiments searching for these processes, except the neutrinoless double beta decay, are unable to probe light(eV mass region) and heavy(hundred GeV mass region) neutrinos. On the other hand due to the effect of a resonant enhancement, some of \Lv decays can be very sensitive to the intermediate mass neutrinos with typical masses in hundred MeV region. These neutrinos may appear as admixtures of the three active and an arbitrary number of sterile neutrino species. We analyze the experimental constraints on these massive neutrino states and discuss their possible cosmological and astrophysical implications.

K-meson neutrinoless double muon decay as a probe of neutrino masses and mixings

Recently an upper bound on the rate of the lepton number violating decay $K^+\to μ^+μ^+π^-$ has been significantly reduced by the E865 experiment at BNL and further improvement is expected in the near future. We study this process as a possible source of information on neutrino masses and mixings. We find that it is insensitive to the light(eV domain) and heavy(GeV domain) neutrinos. However due to the effect of a resonant enhancement this decay is very sensitive to neutrinos $ν_j$ in the mass region $245{MeV}\leq m_{ν_j}\leq 389$ MeV. At present experimental sensitivity we deduce new stringent limits on the neutrino mixing matrix element $U_{μj}$ for neutrino masses in this region.

Nucleon Transversity Distribution from Azimuthal Spin Asymmetry in Pion Electroproduction

The azimuthal asymmetry observed by the HERMES collaboration in semi-inclusive pion production in deep inelastic scattering of unpolarized positron on the longitudinally polarized proton target, can provide information of the quark transversity distributions of the nucleon. We show that the quark transversity distributions predicted both by the light-cone quark-spectator-diquark model and by a pQCD inspired model can give consistent descriptions of the available HERMES data for the analyzing powers $A_{UL}^{\sin ϕ}$ and $A_{UL}^{\sin 2 ϕ}$ for $π^+$ and $π^-$ productions. We also show that the two models give similar predictions of $A_{UL}^{\sin ϕ}$ for $π^+$ production, whereas they give very different predictions of $A_{UL}^{\sin ϕ}$ for $π^-$ production at large $x$. Further precision measurement of $A_{UL}^{\sin ϕ}$ for $π^-$ production can provide a decisive test of different models.

CP-violation in high-energy collisions of polarized protons

We study the possibility of a large CP/T-violation in lepton pair production in the collisions of polarized protons at RHIC-BNL. We propose the single transverse spin asymmetry which quantifies the possible CP/T-violating effect in this reaction as a sensitive indicator of physics beyond the standard model(SM). We consider two examples of mechanisms beyond the SM which can generate a non-zero asymmetry of this type. They rely on the R-parity violating interactions of supersymmetric models and on phenomenological tensor interactions. We estimate the prospects for observing this effect in future experiments.

Light-Cone Representation of the Spin and Orbital Angular Momentum of Relativistic Composite Systems

The matrix elements of local operators such as the electromagnetic current, the energy momentum tensor, angular momentum, and the moments of structure functions have exact representations in terms of light-cone Fock state wavefunctions of bound states such as hadrons. We illustrate all of these properties by giving explicit light-cone wavefunctions for the two-particle Fock state of the electron in QED, thus connecting the Schwinger anomalous magnetic moment to the spin and orbital momentum carried by its Fock state constituents. We also compute the QED one-loop radiative corrections for the form factors for the graviton coupling to the electron and photon. Although the underlying model is derived from elementary QED perturbative couplings, it in fact can be used to simulate much more general bound state systems by applying spectral integration over the constituent masses while preserving all of the Lorentz properties, giving explicit realization of the spin sum rules and other local matrix elements. The role of orbital angular momentum in understanding the "spin crisis" problem for relativistic systems is clarified. We also prove that the anomalous gravitomagnetic moment B(0) vanishes for any composite system. This property is shown to follow directly from the Lorentz boost properties of the light-cone Fock representation and holds separately for each Fock state component. We show how the QED perturbative structure can be used to model bound state systems while preserving all Lorentz properties. We thus obtain a theoretical laboratory to test the consistency of formulae which have been proposed to probe the spin structure of hadrons.

The Flavor and Spin Structure of Hyperons from Quark Fragmentation

We systematically study the hadron longitudinal polarizations of the octet baryons at large $z$ from quark fragmentations in $e^+e^-$-annihilation, polarized charged lepton deep inelastic scattering (DIS) process, and neutrino (antineutrino) DIS process, based on predictions of quark distributions for the octet baryons in the SU(6) quark-spectator-diquark model and a perturbative QCD based counting rule analysis. We show that the $e^+e^-$-annihilation and polarized charged lepton DIS process are able to distinguish between the two different predictions of the hyperon polarizations. We also find that the neutrino/antineutrino DIS process is ideal in order to study both the valence content of the hyperons and the antiquark to hyperon (quark to anti-hyperon) fragmentations, which might be related to the sea content of hyperons.

The nucleon spin structure in a simple quark model

We investigate the spin structure of the nucleon in an extended Jaffe-Lipkin quark model. In addition to the conventional $3q$ structure, different $(3q)(Q\bar{Q})$ admixtures in the nucleon wavefunction are also taken into account. The contributions to the nucleon spin from various components of the nucleon wavefunction are discussed. The effect due to the Melosh-Wigner rotation is also studied.

The Quark-Antiquark Asymmetry of the Nucleon Sea from $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ Fragmentation

We present a general analysis of the spin transfer for $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ production in deep-inelastic scattering of polarized charged leptons on the nucleon, and find that the pattern of different behaviors of $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ production observed by the E665 Collaboration suggests the possibility of quark-antiquark asymmetries either in the quark to $Λ$ fragmentation functions and/or in the quark and antiquark distributions of the target proton. We also point out that the strange-antistrange asymmetry of the nucleon sea may produce an observable contribution to the different behaviors of $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ production. We find that a softer $\bar{s}(x)$ than $s(x)$ as predicted by the light-cone baryon-meson fluctuation model of intrinsic quark-antiquark pairs of the nucleon sea might lead to a reasonable picture. However, the magnitude is still too small to explain the E665 data and the conclusion has also strong model-dependence. This may suggest the importance of quark-antiquark asymmetry in the quark to $Λ$ fragmentation functions, provided that the E665 data are confirmed.

Flavor and Spin Structure of Octet Baryons at Large x

The quark flavor and spin distributions in octet baryons are calculated both in the SU(6) quark spectator diquark model and in a perturbative QCD (pQCD) based model. It is shown that the $Λ$ has the most significant difference in flavor structure at large $x$ between the two models, though the flavor and spin structure of other baryons can also provide tests of different models. The Drell-Yan process for $Σ^{\pm}$ beams on isoscalar targets can be used to test different predictions concerning the valence quark flavor structure of the $Σ^{\pm}$.

$Λ$, $\barΛ$ Polarization and Spin Transfer in Lepton Deep-Inelastic Scattering

The flavor and helicity distributions of the $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ hyperons for both valence and sea quarks are calculated in a perturbative QCD (pQCD) based model. We relate these quark distributions to the fragmentation functions of the $Λ$ and $\barΛ$, and calculate the $z$-dependence of the longitudinal spin transfer to the $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ in lepton deep-inelastic scattering (DIS). It is shown that the spin transfer to the $Λ$ is compatible with the first HERMES results at DESY and further tests are suggested. We also make predictions for the $z$-dependence of the $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ longitudinal polarizations in neutrino (antineutrino) DIS processes. We investigate the sea contribution to the fragmentation functions, and we test a possible scenario where sea quarks in $Λ$ (or sea antiquarks in $\barΛ$) are negatively polarized, whereas sea antiquarks in the $Λ$ (or sea quarks in $\barΛ$) are positively polarized. The asymmetry of the polarized fragmentation functions of sea quarks and antiquarks to $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ provides a way to understand the different behaviour between the $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ spin transfers observed in the recent E665 experiment at FNAL.

Nuclear Effects on the Extraction of Neutron Structure Functions

Nuclear effects in light nuclei due to the presence of spin-one isosinglet 6-quark clusters are investigated. The quark distributions of 6-quark clusters are obtained by using a perturbative QCD (pQCD) based framework, which allows us to get a good description of the ratio of the deuteron structure function to the free nucleon structure function. Nuclear effects on the extraction of the neutron structure functions $F_2^n$ and $g_1^n$ are estimated. We find that the effect on the extracted spin-dependent neutron structure function is very different from that on the spin-independent neutron structure function. The effect enhances the Bjorken sum by about 10%, whereas its correction to the Gottfried sum is rather small. The formalism for calculating nuclear effects is further used to evaluate the spin-dependent structure function of the $^3$He nucleus and a good self-consistent check is obtained.

Flavor and Spin Structure of $Λ$-Baryon at Large x

It is shown that a perturbative QCD (pQCD) based analysis and the SU(6) quark-diquark model give significant different predictions concerning the flavor and spin structure for the quark distributions of the $Λ$-baryon near $x=1$. Detailed predictions for the ratios $u(x)/s(x)$ of unpolarized quark distributions, $Δs(x)/s(x)$ of valence strange quark, and $Δu(x)/u(x)$ of valence up and down quarks of the $Λ$ are given from the quark-diquark model and from a pQCD based model. It is found that the up and down quarks are positively polarized at large $x$, even though their net spin contributions to the $Λ$ might be zero or negative. The significant difference for $u(x)/s(x)$ between the two different approaches are predicted. The prediction of positively polarized up and down quarks inside the $Λ$ at large $x$ has been supported by the available data of $Λ$-polarization in $Z$ decays and also by the most recent HERMES result of spin transfer to the $Λ$ in deep elastic scattering of polarized lepton on the nucleon target.
