A note on Chern-Weil classes of Cartan connections

We present a construction of Chern-Weil characteristic classes for pairs Cartan geometries sharing the same underlying data. Given any model Cartan geometry $(Q,\omega)$ with underlying data $(G,V)$ and a second Cartan geometry $(P,\theta)$ with the same underlying data, we define a subalgebra of polynomials on the Atiyah algebroid of $Q$ together with a characteristic map that recovers the classical Chern-Weil map of a Cartan connection when $(Q,\omega)$ arises from a Klein pair modeling $(P,\theta)$.

The closure of linear foliations

This paper presents a simplified geometric proof of the Molino-Alexandrino-Radeschi (MAR) Theorem, which states that the closure of a singular Riemannian foliation on a complete Riemannian manifold is itself a smooth singular Riemannian foliation. Our approach circumvents several technical and analytical tools employed in the previous proof of the Theorem, resulting in a more direct geometric demonstration. We first establish conditions for a projectable foliation to be Riemannian, focusing on compatible connections. We then apply these results to linear foliations on vector bundles and their lifts to frame bundles. Finally, we use these findings to the linearization of singular Riemannian foliations around leaf closures. This method allows us to prove the smoothness of the closure directly for the linear semi-local model, bypassing the need for intermediate results on orbit-like foliations.

The Global Solutions to Cartan's Realization Problem

We introduce a systematic method to solve a type of Cartan's realization problem. Our method builds upon a new theory of Lie algebroids and Lie groupoids with structure group and connection. This approach allows to find local as well as complete solutions, their symmetries, and to determine the moduli spaces of local and complete solutions. We apply our method to the problem of classification of extremal Kähler metrics on surfaces.

The Classifying Lie Algebroid of a Geometric Structure II: G-structures with connection

Given a G-structure with connection satisfying a regularity assumption we associate to it a classifying Lie algebroid. This algebroid contains all the information about the equivalence problem and is an example of a G-structure Lie algebroid. We discuss the properties of this algebroid, the G-structure groupoids integrating it and the relationship with Cartan's realization problem.

Deformations of symplectic groupoids

We describe the deformation cohomology of a symplectic groupoid, and use it to study deformations via Moser path methods, proving a symplectic groupoid version of the Moser Theorem. Our construction uses the deformation cohomologies of Lie groupoids and of multiplicative forms, and we prove that in the symplectic case, deformation cohomology of both the underlying groupoid and of the symplectic groupoid have de Rham models in terms of differential forms. We use the de Rham model, which is intimately connected to the Bott-Shulman-Stasheff double complex, to compute deformation cohomology in several examples. We compute it for proper symplectic groupoids using vanishing results; alternatively, for groupoids satisfying homological 2-connectedness conditions we compute it using a simple spectral sequence. Finally, without making assumptions on the topology, we constructed a map relating differentiable and deformation cohomology of the underlying Lie groupoid of a symplectic groupoid, and related it to its Lie algebroid counterpart via van Est maps.

Lie groupoids and semi-local models of Singular Riemannian foliations

We describe a local model for any Singular Riemannian Foliation in a neighbourhood of a closed saturated submanifold of a regular stratum. Moreover we construct a Lie groupoid which controls the transverse geometry of the linear approximation of the Singular Riemannian Foliation around these submanifolds. We also discuss the closure of this Lie groupoid and its Lie algebroid.

Deformations of Lie groupoids

We study deformations of Lie groupoids by means of the cohomology which controls them. This cohomology turns out to provide an intrinsic model for the cohomology of a Lie groupoid with values in its adjoint representation. We prove several fundamental properties of the deformation cohomology including Morita invariance, a van Est theorem, and a vanishing result in the proper case. Combined with Moser's deformation arguments for groupoids, we obtain several rigidity and normal form results.

A survey on stability and rigidity results for Lie algebras

We give simple and unified proofs of the known stability and rigidity results for Lie algebras, Lie subalgebras and Lie algebra homomorphisms. Moreover, we investigate when a Lie algebra homomorphism is stable under all automorphisms of the codomain (including outer automorphisms).

On the linearization theorem for proper Lie groupoids

We revisit the linearization theorems for proper Lie groupoids around general orbits (statements and proofs). In the the fixed point case (known as Zung's theorem) we give a shorter and more geometric proof, based on a Moser deformation argument. The passing to general orbits (Weinstein) is given a more conceptual interpretation: as a manifestation of Morita invariance. We also clarify the precise conditions needed for the theorem to hold (which often have been misstated in the literature).

Multiplicative Forms and Spencer Operators

Motivated by our attempt to recast Cartan's work on Lie pseudogroups in a more global and modern language, we are brought back to the question of understanding the linearization of multiplicative forms on groupoids and the corresponding integrability problem. From this point of view, the novelty of this paper is that we study forms with coefficients. However, the main contribution of this paper is conceptual: the finding of the relationship between multiplicative forms and Cartan's work, which provides a completely new approach to integrability theorems for multiplicative forms. Back to Cartan, the multiplicative point of view shows that, modulo Lie's functor, the Cartan Pfaffian system (itself a multiplicative form with coefficients!) is the same thing as the classical Spencer operator.

Lie Algebroids and Classification Problems in Geometry

We show how one can associate to a given class of finite type G-structures a classifying Lie algebroid. The corresponding Lie groupoid gives models for the different geometries that one can find in the class, and encodes also the different types of symmetry groups.
