Schrödinger cat state preparation by non-Gaussian continuous variable gate

We propose a non-Gaussian continuous variable (CV) gate which is able to conditionally produce superposition of two "copies" of an arbitrary input state well separated in the coordinate and momentum plane - a Schrödinger cate state. The gate uses cubic phase state of an ancillary oscillator as a non-Gaussian resource, an entangling Gaussian gate, and homodyne measurement which provides nonunique information about the target system canonical variables, which is a key feature of the scheme. We show that this nonuniqueness manifests problems which may arise by extension of the Heisenberg picture onto the measurement-induced evolution of CV non-Gaussian networks, if this is done in an approach commonly used for CV Gaussian schemes of quantum information.

Multivariate quantum memory as controllable delayed multiport beamsplitter

The addressability of parallel spatially multimode quantum memory for light allows one to control independent collective spin waves within the same cold atomic ensemble. Generally speaking, there are transverse and longitudinal degrees of freedom of the memory that one can address by a proper choice of the pump (control) field spatial pattern. Here we concentrate on the mutual evolution and transformation of quantum states of the longitudinal modes of collective spin coherence in the cavity-based memory scheme. We assume that these modes are coherently controlled by the pump waves of the on--demand transverse profile, that is, by the superpositions of waves propagating in the directions, close to orthogonal to the cavity axis. By the write-in, this allows one to couple a time sequence of the incoming quantized signals to a given set of superpositions of orthogonal spin waves. By the readout, one can retrieve quantum states of the collective spin waves that are controllable superpositions of the initial ones and are on demand coupled to the output signal sequence. In general case, the memory is able to operate as a controllable delayed multi-port beamsplitter, capable of transformation of the delays, the durations and time shapes of signals in the sequence. We elaborate the theory of such light--matter interface for the spatially multivariate cavity-based off--resonant Raman--type quantum memory. Since in order to speed up the manipulation of complex signals in multivariate memories it might be of interest to store relatively short light pulses of a given time shape, we also address some issues of the cavity-based memory operation beyond the bad cavity limit.

Double pass quantum volume hologram

We propose a new scheme for parallel spatially multimode quantum memory for light. The scheme is based on the propagating in different directions quantum signal wave and strong classical reference wave, like in a classical volume hologram and the previously proposed quantum volume hologram [Phys. Rev. A 81, 020302(R)(2010)]. The medium for the hologram consists of a spatially extended ensemble of cold spin-polarized atoms. In absence of the collective spin rotation during the interaction, two passes of light for both storage and retrieval are required, and therefore the present scheme can be called a double pass quantum volume hologram. The scheme is less sensitive to diffraction and therefore is capable of achieving higher density of storage of spatial modes as compared to the thin quantum hologram of [Phys. Rev. A 77, 020302(R)(2008)], which also requires two passes of light for both storage and retrieval. On the other hand, the present scheme allows to achieve a good memory performance with a lower optical depth of the atomic sample as compared to the quantum volume hologram. A quantum hologram capable of storing entangled images can become an important ingredient in quantum information processing and quantum imaging.

A quantum volume hologram

We propose a new scheme for parallel spatially multimode quantum memory for light. The scheme is based on counter-propagating quantum signal wave and strong classical reference wave, like in a classical volume hologram, and therefore can be called a quantum volume hologram. The medium for the hologram consists of a spatially extended ensemble of atoms placed in a magnetic field. The write-in and read-out of this quantum hologram is as simple as that of its classical counterpart and consists of a single pass illumination. In addition we show that the present scheme for a quantum hologram is less sensitive to diffraction and therefore is capable of achieving higher density of storage of spatial modes as compared to previous proposals. A quantum hologram capable of storing entangled images can become an important ingredient in quantum information processing and quantum imaging.

Quantum memory for images - a quantum hologram

Matter-light quantum interface and quantum memory for light are important ingredients of quantum information protocols, such as quantum networks, distributed quantum computation, etc. In this Letter we present a spatially multimode scheme for quantum memory for light, which we call a quantum hologram. Our approach uses a multi-atom ensemble which has been shown to be efficient for a single spatial mode quantum memory. Due to the multi-atom nature of the ensemble it is capable of storing many spatial modes, a feature critical for the present proposal. A quantum hologram has a higher storage capacity compared to a classical hologram, and is capable of storing quantum features of an image, such as multimode superposition and entangled quantum states, something that a standard hologram is unable to achieve. Due to optical parallelism, the information capacity of the quantum hologram will obviously exceed that of a single-mode scheme.

Quantum teleportation of optical images with frequency conversion

We describe a new version of continuous variables quantum holographic teleportation of optical images. Unlike the previously proposed scheme, it is based on the continuous variables quantum entanglement between the light fields of different frequencies and allows for the wavelength conversion between the original and the teleported images. The frequency tunable holographic teleportation protocol can be used as a part of light-matter interface in parallel quantum information processing and parallel quantum memory

Squeezed-light source for the superresolving microscopy

We propose a source of multimode squeezed light that can be used for the superresolving microscopy beyond the standard quantum limit. This source is an optical parametric amplifier with a properly chosen diaphragm on its output and a Fourier lens. We demonstrate that such an arrangement produces squeezed prolate spheroidal waves which are the eigen modes of the optical imaging scheme used in microscopy. The degree of squeezing and the number of spatial modes in illuminating light, necessary for the effective object field reconstruction, are evaluated
