Models of Collisionless Quasineutral Solar Wind Current Sheets

In situ measurements of kinetic scale current sheets in the solar wind show that they are often approximately force-free although the plasma beta is of order one. They frequently display systematic asymmetric and anti-correlated spatial variations of their particle density and temperature across the current sheet, leaving the plasma pressure essentially uniform. These observations of asymmetries have previously been modelled theoretically by adding additional terms to both the ion and electron distribution functions of self-consistent force-free collisionless current sheet models with constant density and temperature profiles. In this paper we present the results of a modification of these models in which only the electron distribution function has a term added to it, whereas the ion distribution function is kept as a thermal (Maxwellian) distribution function. In this case the nonlinear quasineutrality condition no longer has a simple analytical solution and therefore has to be solved alongside Amp\`ere's law. We find that while the magnetic field remains approximately force-free, the non-zero quasineutral electric field gives rise to an additional spatial substructure of the plasma density inside the current sheet. We briefly discuss the potential relation between our theoretical findings and current sheet observations.

Cross-scale energy transfer from fluid-scale Alfv\'en waves to kinetic-scale ion acoustic waves in the Earth's magnetopause boundary layer

In space plasmas, large-amplitude Alfv\'en waves can drive compressive perturbations, accelerate ion beams, and lead to plasma heating and the excitation of ion acoustic waves at kinetic scales. This energy channelling from fluid to kinetic scales represents a complementary path to the classical turbulent cascade. Here, we present observational and computational evidence to validate this hypothesis by simultaneously resolving the fluid-scale Alfv\'en waves, kinetic-scale ion acoustic waves, and their imprints on ion velocity distributions in the Earth's magnetopause boundary layer. We show that two coexisting compressive modes, driven by the magnetic pressure gradients of Alfv\'en waves, not only accelerate the ion tail population to the Alfv\'en velocity, but also heat the ion core population near the ion acoustic velocity and generate Debye-scale ion acoustic waves. Thus, Alfv\'en-acoustic energy channeling emerges as a viable mechanism for plasma heating near plasma boundaries where large-amplitude Alfv\'en waves are present.

Arguments for the physical nature of the triggered ion-acoustic waves observed on the Parker Solar Probe

Triggered ion-acoustic waves are a pair of coupled waves observed in the previously unexplored plasma regime near the Sun. They may be capable of producing important effects on the solar wind. Because this wave mode has not been observed or studied previously and it is not fully understood, the issue of whether it has a natural origin or is an instrumental artifact can be raised. This paper discusses this issue by examining 13 features of the data such as whether the triggered ion-acoustic waves are electrostatic, whether they are both narrow-band, whether they satisfy the requirement that the electric field is parallel to the k-vector, whether the phase difference between the electric field and the density fluctuations is 90 degrees, whether the two waves have the same phase velocity as they must if they are coupled, whether the phase velocity is that of an ion-acoustic wave, whether they are associated with other parameters such as electron heating, whether the electric field instrument otherwise performed as expected, etc. The conclusion reached from these analyses is that triggered ion-acoustic waves are highly likely to have a natural origin although the possibility that they are artifacts unrelated to processes occurring in the natural plasma cannot be eliminated. This inability to absolutely rule out artifacts as the source of a measured result is a characteristic of all measurements.

Triggered Ion-acoustic Waves

The Parker Solar Probe is in a solar orbit with a perihelion for orbit 12 at 13.3 solar radii. The electric field experiment on this satellite observes what we call triggered ion-acoustic waves as the most dominant wave mode above a few Hz within the solar radial distance of 15-25 solar radii. In this mode, a few Hz electrostatic wave is typically accompanied by bursts of a few hundred Hz wave whose bursts are phase locked with each low frequency wave period. Plasma density fluctuations with {\Delta}n/n~0.1 accompany these waves and they have no magnetic field component. The wave durations can be hours and their field and density fluctuations are nearly pure sine waves. They are identified as ion-acoustic waves. The low and high frequency waves are measured to have the same phase velocity within experimental uncertainties, which is a requirement associated with their phase locked relationship. From the measured wavelength, the potential associated with the low frequency wave is estimated to be ~10 Volts, which can result in electron heating via the Landau resonance that is in agreement with observations of the core electron temperature increases at times of such waves. Their phase locked relationship and pure frequency are surprising features that characterize a new regime of instability and evolution of ion-acoustic waves that may not have been reported previously. That these waves are an instrumental effect unrelated to natural processes is considered. While this is unlikely, the possibility that these waves are artificial cannot be rule out

Core Electron Heating By Triggered And Ordinary Ion Acoustic Waves In The Solar Wind

Orbits six through nine of the Parker Solar Probe have been studied to show that solar wind core electrons emerged from 15 solar radii with temperatures that were constant to within ~10% although the solar wind speed varied from 300 to 800 km/sec. After leaving 15 solar radii, the core electrons were isotropically heated as much as a factor of two below 30 solar radii by triggered and natural ion acoustic waves. To distinguish this wave heating from processes occurring inside 15 solar radii, the electron temperature is modeled as having two components, the base temperature observed at 15 solar radii and the temperature resulting from wave interactions between 15 solar radii and the observing point. As further justification of this temperature model, there were about a dozen intervals during the four orbits, summing to about 250 hours of total time, during which there were few waves, TE/TI was small, and the core electron temperature was close to or slightly greater than the base temperature. Both this base temperature and the temperature resulting from wave heating decreased with radius due to the adiabatic expansion of the solar wind. The waves that produced the electron core heating were triggered [Mozer et al, 2021] or normal {Mozer et al, 2020A] ion acoustic waves. They are the dominant wave modes at frequencies greater than 100 Hz at solar distances between 15 and 30 solar radii.

The Electromagnetic Signature of Outward Propagating Ion-Scale Waves

First results from the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) mission have revealed ubiquitous coherent ion-scale waves in the inner heliosphere, which are signatures of kinetic wave-particle interactions and fluid-scale instabilities. However, initial studies of the circularly polarized ion-scale waves observed by PSP have only thoroughly analyzed magnetic field signatures, precluding a determination of solar-wind frame propagation direction and intrinsic wave-polarization. A comprehensive determination of wave-properties requires measurements of both electric and magnetic fields. Here, we use full capabilities of the PSP/FIELDS instrument suite to measure both the electric and magnetic components of circularly polarized waves. Comparing spacecraft frame magnetic field measurements with the Doppler-shifted cold-plasma dispersion relation for parallel transverse waves constrains allowable plasma frame polarizations and wave-vectors. We demonstrate that the Doppler-shifted cold-plasma dispersion has a maximum spacecraft frequency $f_{sc}^{*}$ for which intrinsically right-handed fast-magnetosonic waves (FMWs) propagating sunwards can appear left-handed in the spacecraft frame. Observations of left-handed waves with $|f|>f_{sc}^{*}$ are uniquely explained by intrinsically left-handed, ion-cyclotron, waves (ICWs). We demonstrate that electric field measurements for waves with $|f|>f_{sc}^{*}$ are consistent with ICWs propagating away from the sun, verifying the measured electric field. Applying the verified electric field measurements to the full distribution of waves suggests that, in the solar wind frame, the vast majority of waves propagate away from the sun, indicating that the observed population of coherent ion-scale waves contains both intrinsically left and right hand polarized modes.
